The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

Re: How does each player fit into your future Pacers?

Do not resign any of the free agents.
Replace them with guys just like them (nobodies, 2nd chancers, young prospects) preferably a shooting guard or two.
Find a way to deal DA out of here(make him an assistant or something just get him off the floor)

Judge these players based on what the new coach does with them. There are so many players on this team who've been used improperly it's impossible to make an educated decision about them.

Tinsley was forced to slow it down to a stand still.
JO was turned into a jump shooter instead of using his quickness to blow by his man.
    Foster was a starter...then a reserve..then a starter..then a reserve...starter.
    Granger was a reserve..starter...power forward..guard..small forward.
Baston was a rotation player then a DNPCD.
Dunleavy has been a 3 but suddenly he's a 2. He should probably be a reserve.
Murphy's a center? I always thought he was a power forward w/o the power.
    Green was a 1 then a 2 then a 1 then a 2 never played, played alot, never played.
Daniels was riding the pine then his absence was the most important part of the losing streak?
Ike is a key to the future of this team but Walsh makes it out like he's a long way from even being a starter.
McLeod..."We aren't gonna use you til the last week of the season then we'll need you to start and log around 30 minutes a game. We call you in 57 days."

These guys didn't know what they were, when they were supposed to be and how long they were gonna be there.

Re: How does each player fit into your future Pacers?

      Jamaal Tinsley
i want to like jamaal. i really do. he's talented. can be a fantastic (offensive) PG. but when you only show up to play once every few games, that does not cut it. i was willing to give jamaal benefit of the doubt before last season (i would have traded him but i could live with him still being a pacer) now the TPTB would have to be complete idiots to keep him on the court (and rick's firing certainly indicates keeping jamaal as a real option)

      Darrell Armstrong
i think darrell started really hot, and had a few great games this season but by the end was literally on his last legs. i don't think he hurts the team so if he wants to stay, let him - if and when we trade JO we're going to need some serious veteran leadership in the lockerroom.

      Keith McLeod
ultimately jamaal is the better player. but infinitely more infuriating because so often jamaal plays below his talent. keith is quite servicable and while he's not our answer at starter i think i'd like him as our main backup.

      Orien Greene
i think the only way we keep him is if we end up losing keith. decent defense, not great offense.

      Mike Dunleavy
he's not nearly as disappointing as murphy but he can have frustrating moments. ultimately i think he might as well stay because he's a smart player and if he stays inside the arc could be quite a good/reliable shooter. decent team defense, poor 1on1.

      Marquis Daniels
his injury, given that he wasn't able to comeback (even in the run for the playoffs), is troubling. i wouldn't go out of my way to trade him but would use him as a sweetener. i like his game, would like better defense though.

      Rawle Marshall
im not sure why people dislike rawle so much. he didn't play much and when he did play i didn't think he was terrible. no he's not as talented as danny as another second year (sorta) player. he may not be someone who i really go out of my way to sign, but i have no problem with him being here.

      Danny Granger
danny had a rough second year only in that he had so many different responsibilities placed upon him: be our outside shooter, be our defensive stopper, be our second even first scoring option and he was probably asked to be larry bird's fluffer once SarJar left. i appreciate his work effort/talent/attitude and fully expect him to put more of the pieces together in his third season.

      Shawne Williams
showed some promise, not as much as i felt danny did his first year, but promise none the less. you only move him in to sweeten a tinsley / murphy deal (maybe even JO)

      Jermaine O'Neal
must be traded. it is really the only way for this team to truly improve.

      Ike Diogu
both good and bad moments. needs to learn to play better D, pass better... i really hope we get a big-man coach (what is charles oakley doing these days besides car washes)

      Maceo Baston
WAY better than i anticipated when he was signed last summer. should play more.

      Troy Murphy
disappointing. had a few decent games scoring and rebounding-wise but defense is eye-rollable and never really impressed me. i'd push to trade him if at all possible.

      Jeff Foster
i love jeff but i think this is the time to trade him if we ever plan on doing that.

      David Harrison
unfortunately, not really sure he's tradeable. not sure anyone believes there is untapped potential. the only way i keep him is if we can't somehow improve our frontcourt in the offseason AND bring in a big-man coach.

you can't say we're built to run with JO as the centerpiece. nothing against JO, but the reason why the uptempo offense was destined to fail with this team is because of JO and his offensive style. his is more suited for a grinding it out style

So if all the guys that could potentially move were moved (which I realize won't happen), here's how I see what's left:

1ST UNIT HOLDOVERS: QUIS, SHAWNE, DANNY, DUN DUN

2ND UNIT HOLDOVERS: MCCLEOD, MURPHY, MACEO

      PROJECTS: OG
so you have a SG that can't shoot and three SFs starting?
      This is the darkest timeline.

I think it's only perceived as that because of the way Carlisle ran the offense, Rick Carlisle loved the post up, and wanted Al to do that too, when Al is a better face up to the basket type player!!!

i don't think you can blame it all on Carlisle... the offense under carlisle was much different when JO was out

Re: How does each player fit into your future Pacers?

            Jamaal Tinsley
I want a PG that can hit the 3 and the midrange J consistently. I like Jamaal and I wouldnt be pissed if he stayed but I still want a PG that can shoot.

            Darrell Armstrong
If he is the 3rd or 4th PG he can stay and cheer from the bench and he seems like a guy everyone likes. But if he is here to be the back up PG for the whole 82 game season I will cut myself.

            Keith McLeod
3rd PG maybe the back up, if we get a PG that can shoot.

            Orien Greene
I like Oreo but he wont ever be much in the NBA, his offensive game is horrible. Can compete with DA for the 4th PG spot.

            Mike Dunleavy
Overpaid and he will stay no matter what I think.

            Marquis Daniels
After JO our best player but seems that he has the same problems with injuries that JO and Tins have. I hope he stays healthy because we need him BAD.

            Rawle Marshall
            Should have kept James.

            Danny Granger
Needs to learn how to handle the ball and drive to the bucket. Needs to play defense like he did as a rookie.

            Shawne Williams
Best shooter on the team. Best young player on the team. Needs consistent minutes and be allowed to have a role on the offense instead of just passing the ball around until he gets a wide open 3 every 2 games.

            Jermaine O'Neal
Should be traded because this team is doing nothing with him and it wont do nothing without him. Needs to go on a contender and help another good player get over the hump and contend for a championship. Pacers need to get younger and get help with the cap room.

            Ike Diogu
Starting PF, ready or not if JO is traded. He needs to learn how to pass out of the post and pass period. Hope that after he has a full summer with the guys he will be better,

            Maceo Baston
End of the bench big man when someone gets hurt. Keep him.

            Troy Murphy
He sucks, The worst player on this team. He is soft on defense and soft on offense. He is 6-11 and 240 lbs but I have yet to see him back someone down in the paint and score. He has a good jump shot, WHOPTYDAMNDO. He rebounds just as bad as Al also.

            Jeff Foster
I would trade Jeff if we can get some younger players or we could package Tinsley with him for a PG. But I also wouldnt mind him staying because Jeff has a good attitude.

            David Harrison
Keep him if we hire Oak, so Oak can beat him.

              BYE-BYE

              Darrell Armstrong
he's more then earned another year with us

              Keith McLeod
              sorry but you gotta go.

              Orien Greene
              (see keith mcleod)

              Mike Dunleavy
I like him but he lacks consistency.

              Marquis Daniels
can you stay healthy at least one year to show us what you can do ?

              Rawle Marshall
You helped out when you could but i would much rather had kept James White then you Rawle...sorry.

              Danny Granger
Getting better with age, I think we will see how he really is within the next year or two. Keep up the good work Danny.

              Shawne Williams
I wish he could have played more last year, with his limited minutes hes a solid offensive choice. He will get better i think. Starting 2 guard anyone ?

              Jermaine O'Neal
Showed the true heart of someone who will never quit or give up. I respect the hell out of you for what you put your body through this year JO. Alot of people blame him for stuff but he wasnt 100% this year and was still pretty damn good imo.

              Ike Diogu
Pretty soild rebounder but too short to be a center, and some what on the short side to be a PF. Overall I like the kid.

              Maceo Baston
Did get enough minutes for someone as talented as he is, give him more minutes so he can show what he can do.

              Troy Murphy
              (see Mike Dunleavy)

              Jeff Foster
I like Jeff but his D doesn't equal enough on the offensive side. We have to more him at some point if not this year then next.

              David Harrison
You'd think he was a rookie for the amount of fouls he gets in the short time he is on the court, he wasn't healthy this year long enough to play more then 10 minutes i don't think (not for certain) We need to get rid of him.

              Thats how i feel....

Well, I only listed four guys so you can put positions on them if you want, but what I meant by laying out those three were different levels. Those four guys are starter quality material without reference to what might come back should the others be moved.

In other words, those four IMO are in the top tier of what the remaining guys would be based on my off-season preferences for the current roster.

Certainly, I think either Dun and/or Williams aren't ideally starter material, but they are definitely toward the top end of the talent pool based on my off-season prefernces.

However this dialogue does bring up a good point. How do you work having all these guys at that one position if they're all back next year. I don't particularly see any of them as an ideal SG, but the interesting question for me is can either of the three log some minutes at PF? See the Could this work thread? to discuss the SF logjam further.

How is JT fantastic ? There are perhaps 15 PGs who are faster, can shoot better, defend better and another 10 who have better assists. Exactly in what category is JT fantastic? This isn't meant to be personal but I am clueless why people think he is even a starter. He averages less than 7 assists /game and a few steals and generally the opposing PG runs him into the ground.

There is only one and possibly two players right now who deserves to be starters -JO and Danny. Dunleavy and Ike are good backups. The rest are question marks. Murphy just doesnn't work hard enough or hustle enough for my liking.

i guess i was speaking over his career. there were a few years where he led the league (or was one of the top 3) in assists. he can be a creative offensive playmaker. i did say that in terms of offensive talent, his defense has always been terrible. my point was i know why the pacers re-signed him that year and why they've given him opportunities. and because of his early success, i too have tried to be optimistic. but as i said, i would have ditched him last year and kept AJ. but i totally agree he is a shadow of his once promising self, he has failed to get better and now most of the starting PGs in the league have long since left him in their dust. even this year he had a few games where he played the way we all would love him to (offensively) but it doesn't last. it rarely has with jamaal. thats why i said i want to like him and i want him to be the player his potential and talent indicates he could be. but it just is not going to happen.
                    This is the darkest timeline.

                      Jamaal Tinsley
What more can be said - he's got to go, or become a backup.

                      Darrell Armstrong
                      Make him an assistant coach

                      Keith McLeod
Could be 3rd string PG. Could go.

                      Orien Greene
Could be 3rd string PG. Could go.

                      Mike Dunleavy
Good team player. Impossible contract so he stays. Backup SG/SF.

                      Marquis Daniels
I'm not impressed with Quis. His lack of shooting is a HUGE problem. I can see why Dallas gave up on him. I would too. Bad contract as well. Backup SG, or trade.

                      Rawle Marshall
Hasn't given a real reason to keep him. Can be a 3rd string SG. Waive or trade.

                      Danny Granger
A little disappointing to those who expected. I didnt expect. Danny's a decent starting SF in the league. Nothing more. But that's good enough for now.

                      Shawne Williams
Showed some real potential. Will be better with PT, and should be given the backup SG/SF minutes. Can also give some minutes as PF in small-ball.

                      Jermaine O'Neal
Jermaine iso-ball has killed this team for the past 2 seasons. HE'S GOT TO UNDERSTAND IT! Depends on Jermaine. If he's willing to play a lesser role offensively - he should stay. Otherwise his salary and trade value can get this team the pieces it really needs. Ironically, I think JO's value to his team will be much better after he's peaked and settled for a lesser role. It's called an ego problem...

                      Ike Diogu
Needs to learn to pass out of the post or he's gone. I'm not sure that's a learnable aspect. I'd trade him for a decent deal. Too many big men as it is.

                      Maceo Baston
I love Baston. He should start or be traded to a team that's willing to play him more, for his sake. START MACEO!

                      Troy Murphy
Untradeable so he stays. Backup PF/C.

                      Jeff Foster
Another big man that can be moved for an upgrade at other positions. If not then he's a backup PF/C - no more.

                      David Harrison
Not smart enough to be an NBA player. He just doesn't get it, and is a liability every time he takes the court. Trade or waive.

                      So that leaves:
                      PG: ???/Tinsley/McLeod or Greene
                      SG: ???/Quis/Dun/Williams
                      SF: Granger/Williams/Dun
                      PF: lesser-JO/Murphy/Ike
                      C: Maceo/Foster

Waived/Traded - McLeod or Greene, Marshall, Harrison

This team needs a backcourt ASAP.
