The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

Re: Pacers vs Celts post game thread

I was looking at the Box score and noticed 2 things:

1 ) Dunleavy and Murphy seem to be 4th/5th scoring options over the last 2 games....almost non-existent...at least from an offensive POV. I haven't been able to watch the last 2 games....so I don't know what's happening. I know that Murphy was rebounding....but are they at least being effective without the ball?

2 ) We really played some solid defense in the 2nd and 3rd QTRs. The Pacers kept the Cs to 26 total points during that stetch.

What's strange is Carlisle typically puts in his quote un quote defensive unit when we get big leads......YET, we always blow them with that excellent defensive unit.

Bottom line is...a line up with just defensive players isn't nearly as good as the regulars who play together and know where the help needs to come from. Just can't understand why he (Carlisle) stills does this as it always fails. Our normal line-ups play so much better defense than these make shift protect the lead combos he uses late. Just see Qtrs 2 and 3 as you mentioned above.

As far as the weather goes. It is late January in Indiana - seems like a pretty typical night. 14 degrees it is winter - unless there is a huge snow storm I don't see how a little cold weather should keep people away. (Of course I'll never forget an excuse from a playoff game a few years back. People didn't go because the weather was too nice. As I said at the time OK so people don't go when the weather is bad and they don't go when it is good. I don't understand how the fact the Colts play in 5 days should have any impact on attenance.

Rommie: the attendance went up about 700 per game in the brawl year and some of that was the increase in pre sales due to ECF and 61 win team. But also Reggie announced his retirement in early February and attendance increased because of that.

I don't want to focus everything on the attendance, but 12,600 shocked me
I hate to keep going back to this but you should have heard the Celtics announcers. They were shocked. They were talking about how the fieldhouse had had some amazing atmosphere in the past and how it was almost always full. Tommy then made some joke about how everyone is Miami but he was corrected when the other two guys wondered how ALL of Indianapolis's notioriously loud and cheerful basketball fans disappeared.

I was stunned. I had no idea it was this bad. I'm pretty sure Rajon Rondo had more fans show up from Kentucky than we did. I do, however, see that it might take a while to get the fans back.

Btw, I want to call attention to four things that I feel should be especially noted.

1.) I really like Rawle Marshall. Not only can he defend well and has some crazy length going on but he got to the line 12 times (sure, he didn't shoot it well but still). 12 times! (That's more than JO or Tinsley).

2.) Troy Murphy and Jeff Foster are really important to this team. Both need to stay and both need to play. They bring so many things between them. Jeff's been looking better and better now that he isn't under pressure to score. Murphy will get better on some minute things but he helps the team SO much on offense. The lane has opened up so much for guys like Tinsley, Danny, Marquis, and Marshall it's crazy. Not to mention JO. The Celtics announcers pointed out that JO and Jeff have an uncanny chemistry and JO knows where Jeff is when double teamed, just like he knew where Brad was. Have patience with Murphy. Soon JO will develop some chemistry with him and he'll be good for 12-15 each night off of gimme baskets. Also, some of these picks Murphy sets for Tinsley...wow. It really helps his shot. Even if he doesn't just come off the pick and pull up, he can get a big guy switched on him then just break him down.

3.) This is how Tinsley needs to play. I think he can play this way too. He just needs to stay within the offense and take shots when they give them to him. He made some fantastic passes too. It's astounding, I've seen this team develop more chemistry these games since the trade then they did all season long with Al and Jack.

4.) There was this amazing play where Dunleavy had the ball, JO came for the high screen and they decided to trap Dunleavy who easily found a wide open JO who nailed the shot. When I saw this play, I melted in front of my TV. Just melted...oh, if only his shots could start going down too...

True, Tinsley got that tech, which was disappointing. Then again, Scalibrine was being really dirty. But there at the end it seemed as if Tinsley had had enough and he completely took over. He made sure that he got the ball so he could handle it or pass it across half court. Then he wanted the ball so that he could step up and hit those free throws and he did...10/11 for the night. Finally he ended the game with a beautiful strip and was classy enough not to score on that final possession when it was just him and the basket (and he had a chance to go for 30). Younger Tinsley might not have stepped up and done that. The Celtics announcers were raving about his game tonight and his veteran attitude and they said they were hoping Telfair could make similar adjustments to his streetball game.

Rawle Marshall needs to be un-unleashed. He's crazy out there. You would think he just learned how to dunk the way he plays. I'm worried for his health and the health of his teammates and the opponent. God help us!

The Star headline this morning calls it an ugly win. I don't agree.

I'd rather see the Pacers put opponents away in the 3rd, and then coast to victory. A 7-point margin at the end is fine, and I dn't care when the points were scored.

Of course, the Pacers' play in the 1st and 4th quarters wasn't good, and the Pacers need to play 48 good minutes at all five positions to beat better teams. But it was a win, and those are never ugly.
And I won't be here to see the day
It all dries up and blows away
I'd hang around just to see

Basketball is a winter-time sport, and most of the season is played during winter. The weather here right now isn't terrible -- temps in the 20s (-3 Centigrade) which is pretty normal.

Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Boston, Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Detroit, Denver, Philadelphia: they are all in cold weather cities and they are getting better attendance than Indy. I agree with UncleBuck that we do have an acute problem.

I am one of those who stayed away out of dislike for Jackson, et al. I went to only one game prior to the trade. I've been to two since the trade, and I'm going again next Monday. But I'm just one guy.

I can actually see where some of the people who usually sit it the lower bowl may also have tickets to the superbowl, and may be taking a week in Miami. When I went to the game against Chicago and had row 10 seats the people in front of me were comparing their superbowl tickets.

I am somewhat amazed, we get a clear W, admittedly as expected, but with outstanding play from our 2 core players, JO and Tins (who both are regularly maligned, one more then the other) and all we can discuss is the attandence.

Well ok, about ATT: those who weren't there, missed something, and by not being there, loose the right to be spoken about.

                      NEXT:

I liked how we went back to solid D in the 2nd and 3rd Q
I did not really like how we lost it sorta in the 4th, but this is the NBA, teams will try and make a run, players do loose sharpness when longer on the bench (the "diminishing of our lead started early in the 4th when the bench was still in) and it took time before RC decided to re-insert all starters.

I'm a bit amazed that he did not give Ike some extended minutes, but we'll see when that happens.

What (outside of the regular nagging about these players here) amazes me most however is how complete these 2 players have become/ are becoming.
it is no longer "just the ast" or "just the st" or (in JO's case) "just the RB or Pts" but they have an overall complete game, stats that speak, none at the top, but solid all around.

high Rb (for a PG), good Ast, High (%) scoring, high St low (still to high)TO and so on, and for JO; high Ast (regularity now, despite ppl here always saying he "can not" pass the ball) high pts rb and bs.

Full lines instead of "leader" in one.
It shows that they are serious in the "it's all about the team" mentality and I think that one way or another this is the biggest profit we made on the trade.

We are showing signs of getting a lot better and I must admit that the discussion last night of the commentators about the 4 teams in the East that are "going to decide it" did not include the P's, but on the other hand I love the "below the radar" thing, look at what it did for the Colts

The last three seasons the Pacers have been decidedly mediocre. The average Hoosier has rarely heard any positive reporting on the team. The faces we once knew are gone and have been replaced with a less star studded cast. There is no buzz.

Meanwhile across town. There's this quarterback who story is intriguing. His father played in the NFL and his brother does now. He a reigning MVP and a sure lock for the Hall of Fame. Oh yeah he's passing the ball to one of the greatest wide receivers ever to play who's also a sure lock for the Hall of Fame and they're on the verge of being the best passing duo of all time. The Colts won their first 13 games last year and their first 9 this year. They've been setting a new record every week for what seems like an eternity. They're playing in the freakin' Super Bowl this weekend.

Throw in an exciting year for Indiana college basketball. Butler currently ranks 13th in the AP's top 25. Notre Dame is 21st. IU just dropped out of the top 25. Purdue is 14-7. Purdue and Notre Dame also had some football success playing in bowl games in late December.

Plus The Colts are the city's new crush. It's really not that hard to figure out. The players represent the city better. They are far more talented. There are better personalities. There is much more success.

It wasn't a very inspirinig win, but had we blown the game can you imagine the reactions on here?

They did their jobs. Period. We haven't always been able to say that about them in the past couple of seasons.

We won that game because our two best players were the two best players on the court.

This team will need several weeks, post-trade, to gel. The idea of benching Murphy after just a couple of games for "Linus' security blanket" is just counterproductive. Give JO and Troy time to work out on-court chemistry, spacing, etc., and I think we'll all really like that lineup and I think we'll all like Foster in the sixth-man, "give the team a spark" role that he was made for.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

I thought Jammal had an excellent game despite the second half of the 4th. He completely schooled all three of the Celtics point guards, sick or not. They got little penetration thru the first three quarters on Tinsley. Armstrong was a different story. They gave him some of his own medicine and attcked him with speed burning right by him a number of times. JO played as usual. I thought Dunleavy and Granger played lethargic. If Granger is gonna our #2 he has to be more assertive. I'm not sure he's ready for that burden. Mike Dunleavy may not be our answer at the two. I'm more comfortable with Daniels at this point. Troy and Jeff ,when combined, have given us a solid center. Whether you will by 20 or 5, it's still a win.

Man if TINS would play like that more often we would be in good shape. Both him and JO played very well, great job! Good game by the Pacers, though we beat a team we should beat, so on to the next.

I was looking at the schedule and Febuary should be called Pacers vs The Western Conference. 9 out of eleven games are against Western Conference teams. The good thing about it is that we are home for almost all of those games. Very important we play well this month. I would love to see us move up in the Eastern Conference.

                              Go Pacers!!!

I agree with you on Granger. He is still a little reserved, he needs to shoot more and yes be assertive. But we have to remember he is only in his second year. I hope someone his telling him he is the man and that he need to shoot more. I also like Daniels, I think he is the X factor right now.

DUN DUN is streaky and I think we are seeing him on the downside right now. But I looked at the box from last night and he only took 6 shots. I think maybe we run a few more plays for him, he seems to do well off of screens.

You are also right about Murph and Foster at Center.
