Would the Pacers be interested? I hope not

Isiah working to get rid of Rose
The Knicks are in the process of negotiating a buyout with Jalen Rose, according to a source close to the veteran small forward. Rose was a no-show at yesterday's public practice at FDU-Teaneck. When asked about Rose's whereabouts, Isiah Thomas replied: "I would just say personal reasons at this time."
Jerome James and newcomer Kelvin Cato also were missing yesterday.
Rose, who is scheduled to earn $16 million, .arrived for camp out of shape and struggled in the preseason. In four games, Rose played 42 minutes and missed the only two shots he attempted. He did not dress for Friday's preseason finale against the Nets and did not sit on the bench.
It has been clear since the start of training camp that Rose has no future in New York. Quentin Richardson is expected to be the Knicks' opening-night starting small forward, with David Lee and Renaldo Balkman serving as backups. Also, small forward Jared Jeffries, who was signed during the summer, is scheduled to return from a fractured right wrist by mid-December.
Asked if Rose would be in the rotation, Thomas said: "I'll let you know in a couple of days."
Last month, the Knicks reached a contract settlement with veteran forward Maurice Taylor, who has since signed with the Sacramento Kings. Taylor is on the Knicks' salary cap this season for $9.7 million.

HACKENSACK, N.J. - Jalen Rose has been absent from the Knicks' plans for most of the preseason, so it was no shock that he wasn't with the team when it held an open workout in Nets country yesterday.
Rose was excused from the hour-long practice at FDU-Teaneck for "personal reasons," according to the team. So was Kelvin Cato, who likely was using the time to work out the logistics of moving to New York after signing with the Knicks on Wednesday.
Rose, however, might have been using the day off to work out the details of moving away from New York. The Knicks are working on a trade or buyout of the 31-year-old Rose, who is due $16.9 million this season and has no role with the team. "We're in discussions," agent Arn Tellem wrote yesterday in a text message. "Nothing finalized."
Rose's veteran presence and expiring contract might be appealing to a contending team that could maneuver with the salary-cap room he would provide next offseason. The Knicks are not a contending team and won't have salary-cap room until Nate Robinson is ready to retire.
Rose didn't play in Friday's preseason finale against the Nets; in his four preseason appearances, he played only 42 minutes and took only two shots. He missed both.
Knicks president/coach Isiah Thomas was asked after practice yesterday if Rose will be part of the Knicks' rotation when the season opens Wednesday in Memphis. "I'll let you know in a couple of days," Thomas said.
Rose came to the Knicks on Feb. 3 in a trade with the Raptors; at the time, then-coach Larry Brown said, "He's exactly what we need."
Now Brown is gone, of course, and the Knicks don't need Rose at all. Even with projected starting small forward Jared Jeffries nursing a broken left wrist, Thomas seems committed to Quentin Richardson and rookie Renaldo Balkman at small forward. He also has used a three-guard look with Stephon Marbury, Steve Francis and Jamal Crawford playing alongside two big men.
Thomas already has said he thinks Rose is deficient defensively and might not have "a lot of run left in that body." Rose has appeared to be in less-than-peak condition this preseason.
Rose averaged 12.7 points in 26 games with the Knicks last season and 12.3 overall for the season.
