The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

  • 25 NBA DRAFT PROFILES

I thought some draft profiles would come in handy here on the forum so I made some. There's 25 of them and I figure they shound include whoever the Pacers pick with their 17th pick. Then of course there could be some trades, but 25 shold cover the Pacers pick or picks.

If I knew it was going to take me 12 hours to do this I wouldn't have started. Well . . . I might have. I think you guys are worth it. Sometimes! (grin)

*The NBA measures players in shoes.

    Combine Rank:.................73
    Projected Pick:.................12 to 22

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...05-centers.htm
OVERVIEW: An early entry candidate in the 2004 draft before withdrawing his name from consideration, Andriuskevicius has spent the last two years learning from legendary Lithuanian center Arvydas Sabonis, who plays for the senior team. After playing with the junior squad in 2003-04, the 19-year-old averaged 4.4 points and shot 50% from the floor in 10 minutes with the senior team this year.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Andriuskevicius surprisingly stayed in the draft despite not having a promise from any NBA team that it would take him early. Teams better structured to select him would be those who don't need him to develop quickly, and that means Indiana (17), Memphis (19) and Sacramento (23) are possible destinations.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Zydrunas Ilgauskas

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Gregor ****a

ROLE PROJECTION: Backup forward until he gains weight.

POSITIVES: Andriuskevicius can shoot the basketball and run the floor well. He is too thin now to play minutes at center or even power forward but might get onto an NBA court in the next two years because he can shoot the perimeter shot comfortably to about 20 feet. He came up through the same system that produced another 7-3 Lithuanian, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and Ilgauskas also was very skinny at this stage of his career. Today, Ilgauskas is one of the better (and few) true centers in the NBA.

SHORTCOMINGS: Andriuskevicius is very thin and very weak. He just turned 19 and has plenty of physical development ahead of him. He is not ready to play in the NBA now and could be another Darko Milicic — a very talented player who is going require patience and a long-range view in order to succeed.

    OwntheDraft http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20...uskevicius.htm
Biography: Began career on the junior circuit for the Zalgiris Kaunas junior team. He was loaned briefly to an Italian team in 2004 for the under-20 circuit in the Italian league. He first drew attention with comparisons to Zydrunas Illgauskas and Arvydas Sabonis when he declared for the draft last year. He pulled out and returned to Europe where he played very sparingly for the Zalgiris Kaunas senior team this year. If he stays in the draft this year, he very likely will be the first player chosen from a foreign team.

ESPN Summary: Andriuskevicius may have the most upside of anyone on the board, but he's also the furthest away. He'll have to spend a minimum of two years overseas or in the NBDL bulking up. But once he does, he has everything else. Big risk, high reward means that his draft stock will be all over the place. The Suns almost promised him at No. 7 last year; getting him at No. 21 this year seems like a steal.

    Andrew Bogut

    Birthplace:...................Birthplace: Melbourne Australia
    Birthdate:....................11/28/84

    College:.......................Utah Utes, Sophomore
    Position:.......................C/PF

    Wingspan:.....................7'3

    Season Avgs 04/05:.....20.4 ppg, 12.2 rpg, 1.9 bpg, FG% 62
    Season Avgs 03/04:.....12.5 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 1.3 bpg, FG% 57
    Season Avgs 02/03:.....
    Season Avgs 01/02:.....

    Combine Rank:..............60
    Projected Pick:...............1 or 2

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...05-centers.htm

OVERVIEW: The Australian sophomore was the consensus college player of the year in 2004-05, averaging 20.4 points per game and 12.2 rebounds — second in the NCAA. Bogut also ranked eighth nationally with a field goal percentage of 62.0% and led the nation with 26 double-doubles. He led the Utes to a 29-6 record and the Mountain West Conference regular season title. Bogut averaged 14.8 points and 8.8 rebounds last summer in Athens for the Austrailan Olympic Team.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Either the first or second overall pick. Bogut came right out and said the Atlanta Hawks, picking second, have told him they would take him if he isn't the No. 1 overall pick by Milwaukee.

COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Brad Miller, Raef LaFrentz

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Chris Kaman

    ROLE PROJECTION: Immediate starter.

POSITIVES: Bogut embraces the center position. Unlike so many 7-footers these days, Bogut relishes playing with his back to the basket. He has an excellent variety of post moves and already is adept at hitting open teammates when the double-team comes his way. Bogut is extremely aggressive and decisive when he gets the ball down low. He is a better athlete than many believe and he is physically ready to play in the NBA.

SHORTCOMINGS: Bogut is not much of a shot-blocker for a 7-footer. The ones he does block are usually shots taken by the man he is guarding, not against drivers that he switched off and confronted. He improved his free-throw shooting to 69 percent his sophomore year, but if he is going to be a go-to guy for his new team, he needs to bring that up a few more percentage points to be really effective.

    http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20...rew_Bogut.html
Biography: Born and bred in Australia, though of Croatian descent. Bogut played prolifically on the international level there before coming to the states for the Australian under-19 national team. He picked up most valuable player honors at 2003 FIBA Junior World Championships. He was recruited by Rick Majerus to play at the University of Utah, where he had a good enough freshman year (Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year) that he could have been drafted in the first round last year if he had come out. Instead, he was enticed by Ray Giacoletti (who flew to Australia in order to lobby him) to return to Utah for another year. This year he cemented his top-three draft status by virtually dominating the collegiate ranks. He won almost every major award in college basketball while leading the Utes to their first Sweet Sixteen since 1998.

    Draftexpress: http://draftexpress.com/viewprofile.php?p=70
    Hoopshype: http://www.hoopshype.com/draft/andrew_bogut.htm

ESPN Summary: It appears the Bucks are leaning strongly toward making Bogut the No. 1 pick in the draft. If they don't, there's no way he gets past the Hawks at No. 2.

    Andrew Bynum

    Hometown:...................Metuchen, NJ
    Birthdate:....................10/27/87
    Age:...........................17
    College:.......................none - St. Joseph's, HS Senior
    Position:.......................C

    Weight:.........................280
    Height:..........................x
    Height in Shoes:.............7'0
    Reach:...........................x
    Vertical:.........................x
    Wingspan:......................x

Season Avgs 04/05:.....22 ppg, 16 rpg, 5 bpg
    Season Avgs 03/04:.....
    Season Avgs 02/03:.....
    Season Avgs 01/02:.....

    Combine Rank:...............Not at combine
    Projected Pick:...............10 to 20

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...05-centers.htm
OVERVIEW: Bynum averaged 22 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks as a senior. In the McDonald's High School All-American Game, the 17-year-old tallied nine points and five rebounds in 11 minutes. Bynum originally committed to Connecticut before entering the NBA Draft.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Bynum says he is confident about being a lottery pick, and it's hard to imagine he would stay in the draft if he didn't have an idea he would go at least in the top 20. New York, picking eighth, is a team that obviously needs a center, but Isiah Thomas might not be able to wait for Bynum to develop into an NBA player.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Shaq

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Michael Olowokandi

    ROLE PROJECTION: Backup center

POSITIVES: Bynum has a soft touch around the basket and can even step out to about 14 feet and hit jump shots. He has lost a lot of weight over the past year and is getting closer to the type of condition he needs to be in. He is one of the very few players to come into the draft in recent years with legitimate center height and weight. He has some agility for a man his size, but this too must improve.

SHORTCOMINGS: Although Bynum blocked some shots in high school, he doesn't appear to have the quickness to drop off his man and challenge drivers to the basket. Conditioning work at the NBA level takes a serious, long-lasting commitment, and he will have to prove that he will do what it takes to remain in condition to play.

ESPN Summary: The big kid is raw, but he's stunned teams with his skills and size in workouts. Rumors abound that the Lakers have made him a promise at No. 10.

    Position:.......................PF

    Season Avgs 03/04:.....
    Season Avgs 02/03:.....
    Season Avgs 01/02:.....

    Combine Rank:..................39
    Projected Pick:...................9 to 18

OVERVIEW: The 2005 Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year, Diogu became the third player to lead the league in both scoring (22.6) and rebounds (9.8), joining California's Mark McNamara in 1982 and Oregon State's A.C. Green in 1985. Diogu also led the conference in blocks (2.34), becoming the first Pac-10 player to rank first in each of those three categories. The junior forward also rewrote the conference record book with 248 free throws made, breaking his own mark of 243 set as a sophomore. The Pac-10's Freshman of the Year in 2003, Diogu scored 1,946 points in his three seasons with the Sun Devils, reaching double digits in all of his 91 games.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Diogu is climbing past fellow power forwards Chris Taft and Wayne Simien. Now the question is will he continue to climb, above Hakim Warrick, Charlie Villanueva and Sean May? Diogu has at least reached the late teens, and some think he will go quite a bit higher. The highest projection for Diogu might be ninth to Golden State, but more likely he will end up with New Jersey (15), Toronto (16), Indiana (17) or Boston (18).

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Elton Brand

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Gary Trent

    ROLE PROJECTION: Dominant forward.

POSITIVES: Diogu always seems to be right where the ball is, and that's not by accident. He pursues rebounds relentlessly, snatches loose balls out of the air with one of the best sets of hands around and scores inside over taller people with seeming ease. While not the biggest power forward prospect, Diogu has the kind of makeup that creates lunch-bucket stars like Ben Wallace. However, Diogu has offensive talent as well and has begun to expand his face-the-basket game as well.

SHORTCOMINGS: Diogu is a legitimate 6-8, but that is not big for a power forward in today's NBA. When matched up against Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O'Neal or their ilk, he will have to deny them position on the block and try to deny them the ball. He is very strong and can block shots, but length is likely to give him a big challenge.

    ----------

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...int-guards.htm
OVERVIEW: Felton, who quarterbacked the Tar Heels to the national championship and received the Bob Cousy Award as the top point guard in the country, led the Atlantic Coast Conference in assists (6.9) and 3-point field goal percentage (.440) — improving upon a 34% mark in his first two years. Felton made a school-record 12 straight from the arc early in the season. He also chipped in 12.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and two steals per contest. A first-team All-ACC pick as a junior, Felton averaged 6.9 assists per game during his three-year career.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: It's a strange year in the NBA Draft when the third point guard taken could be as high as the sixth overall pick. But that's the scenario for Felton, who is rated as just a tad behind Deron Williams and Chris Paul. There is much speculation about point guard-deprived teams trying to entice New Orleans, Charlotte and Utah (picks 4-6) to trade with them so they can snatch one of the top point guards, but Felton is most likely to wind up in Charlotte or Utah, who both have point guard needs of their own.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Mike Bibby

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Lindsey Hunter

    ROLE PROJECTION: Starting point guard.

POSITIVES: Felton is a tremendous defensive player, ball-hawking the opposing point guard into turnovers with his quick hands and quicker feet. On offense, he has great quickness off the dribble and is constantly probing the defense, looking for ways to penetrate and earn his teammates open shots. His jump shot, once a glaring weakness, has improved dramatically and his arsenal is now well-balanced. Felton exudes confidence and leadership and tends to make big plays in big situations.

SHORTCOMINGS: Like Chris Paul, Felton is vertically challenged. He's just 6 feet tall, although that frame holds a muscular 200 pounds. Felton will go through the usual rookie hazings of being a short point guard who gets posted up by taller opposing point guards. If his strength and leaping ability prove that to be inefficient, Felton won't have to worry about that being a staple used by other teams against him.

    http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20...ond_Felton.htm
Biography: Felton is a native of the Palmetto State (South Carolina). Playing high school ball there he managed to grab almost every award that a high school basketball player could pick up in the course of his career. Felton was a two time Mr. Basketball in North Carolina, he was named to almost every All-American team his senior year and he won the Atlantic Club's Naismith award for best high school basketball player. Felton was a starter for the Tar Heel from the moment that he stepped on campus. In his freshman year he was second in the ACC in assists, fourth in minutes and was voted as the team's Most Valuable Player -the first freshman to receive the award. Felton has not looked back since then. Felton hasn't looked back since then, steering his team to the national championship this year and winning the Bob Cousy Award for the best collegiate point guard.

ESPN Summary: The fastest point guard in the draft. He's strong, athletic and has improved his jump shot, but he's a little small and a little on the wild side.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...r-forwards.htm
OVERVIEW: A two-time All-Pac-10 performer, Frye averaged 15.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game as a senior. His 85 blocked shots were fifth best in conference history and second in Arizona annals. A big-game performer, Frye averaged 14.3 points and 9.6 rebounds while shooting 55.5% from the floor with eight double-doubles in 12 career NCAA Tournament appearances.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: After spending most of May projected to go in the teens, Frye has worked out exceedingly well for teams much higher in the draft, including the Knicks, who have the eighth pick. A dark horse in the Frye sweepstakes might be Toronto (7), which selected Rafael Araujo eighth last year and suffered through a slow developmental year with him. Frye almost certainly would not get past Golden State at No. 9.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Chris Bosh

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Alan Henderson

    ROLE PROJECTION: Starting power forward.

POSITIVES: Frye will play primarily at power forward, but he is big enough to give teams some minutes at center, making him a more valuable commodity. He has always been a high-percentage shooter and is adept at both jump hooks and facing jumpers out to the elbow. Frye will block some shots with his athleticism and also is a very intelligent player. He understands the game well and knows how to do more than just set a pick. He can handle the ball in the high post, make passes and reverse the
    ball.

SHORTCOMINGS: It's not fair to say that Frye is soft. Players like Frye who have fluid motion in their movements and agile bodies often look like they are not working hard when in fact they are. Frye is never going to be an enforcer and he is better served using his skills rather than his bulk to accomplish things on the court. Frye raised some eyebrows when he did much better than some bulkier players on strength tests at the NBA Pre-Draft Camp, so his critics are addressing how he looks more than how he actually is when they try to pin a softlabel on him.

http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20...nning_Frye.htm Biography: Frye was born and raised in Arizona, where he led his high school team to the state championship. He was a top-100 recruit for the Wildcats and he was an impact player from his freshman year. In his junior and senior years, Frye was named first team all-Pac 10 and was among the league leaders in blocked shots and rebounds.

ESPN Summary: He has great size, athleticism and he's a legit shot-blocker in the post. The fact that he averaged just seven rebounds a game doesn't seem to be scaring anyone off. The Jazz will give him serious consideration at No. 6 and it appears the Knicks have made him a promise at No. 8.

    Season Avgs 01/02:.....

    Combine Rank:..............51
Projected Pick:...............Mid to late first round

OVERVIEW: The main catalyst behind Louisville's first appearance in the Final Four in 19 years, Garcia led the team in scoring (15.7), assists (148), blocks (56) and steals (65). Leading the team in scoring for the second straight year, Garcia also ranked within the top eight in Conference USA in each of those categories. The swingman, a three-time All-Conference USA selection, holds the Cardinals' single-game records in both assists (15) and 3-pointers made (8). One of 10 players named to the Conference USA All-Decade Team, Garcia captured the league's top freshman honor in 2003.
LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Garcia is solidly in the first round, but it remains to be seen how high he can go. Some think Denver would like to snag him with one of its two picks (20, 22), but the uncertain availability of other blue-chip players who could fall to Denver make that problematic. The factor in Garcia's favor is that he has the type of strong fundamental training that would allow him to be a complementary player on a strong team, who drafts in the 20s.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Josh Howard

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Quincy Lewis

ROLE PROJECTION: Reserve scoring small forward.

POSITIVES: Garcia has excellent shooting mechanics. When he's rolling, he can carry a team with his outside shooting. He also is tougher than he looks with his lean body. He doesn't mind taking the ball to the basket strong and drawing fouls to get his points. Garcia has already had some adversity in his life, being raised in New York in a hardscrabble environment. He is not likely to back down the first time things don't go his way.

SHORTCOMINGS: Like Reggie Miller and Tayshaun Prince before him, Garcia will always have to answer skeptics' questions about his wiry, thin frame. There's no question NBA small forwards will try to take him into the post to see how he reacts to an elbow here, a leaning torso there. Most of Garcia's questions as a rookie will be as to who he will defend. If he answers those affirmatively, he should have a long career.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...ing-guards.htm
OVERVIEW: A transfer from Central Florida, Graham scored 1,019 points in his two seasons with Oklahoma State. This past season, the bruising forward shared the team scoring lead with fellow senior John Lucas, averaging 17.7 points per game. Graham led the Big 12 Conference in free throw shooting this season at 88.7% and set a league record with 39 consecutive attempts made. He was named MVP of the 2005 Big 12 tournament, averaging 21.7 points as the Cowboys captured their second straight title. The Big 12 Newcomer of the Year in 2004, Graham scored 36 points against Nebraska as a junior. It was the second-most points by a Cowboy in Gallagher-Iba Arena history, ranking behind only Bob Kurland's school-record 58 in 1946. Graham played his entire collegiate career with his twin brother, Stephen.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Graham could go as high as No. 7 to Toronto or still be around at No. 12 for the Clippers. It would hard to imagine the Knicks passing up Graham, since Isiah Thomas is known to value outstanding athletic ability more highly than knowledge of the game. However, New York may be set to take a bigger player, meaning Graham could be around for the Lakers (10th) or Orlando (11th). The upset would be that Graham lasts until the Clippers and becomes a big star there, with the Lakers having passed on him.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Vince Carter

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Ricky Davis

ROLE PROJECTION: Sixth man as a rookie, starter thereafter

POSITIVES: Among 75 players who went through the athletic testing at the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Chicago, Graham finished first. 'Nuff said. He is an explosive, quick, agile athlete who can score from anywhere on the floor. He has always been a high-percentage shooter, and even though he takes very few 3-point shots, he tends to make the ones he takes. He shot 89 percent from the free-throw line as a senior, so his acrobatic forays to the basket are rewarded when he gets fouled.

SHORTCOMINGS: Graham has never been a so-called go-to guy anywhere he has played. He averaged only 11 shots per game playing for a loaded Oklahoma State team, and that is the most he took as a college player over four years. With Graham's athleticism, he will eventually be expected to take a leading role in scoring for a team, and he may have a greater mental adjustment to that role than a physical one.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...l-forwards.htm
OVERVIEW: A two-time first-team All-Mountain West Conference forward, Granger led the Lobos in scoring (18.8), rebounding (8.9), steals (2.1) and blocks (2.0) this season. The versatile performer shot 52% from the floor and 43% from the arc. A transfer from Bradley, Granger averaged 19.1 points and 8.9 rebounds in his two years at New Mexico and finished six points shy of 1,000. Granger was a Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman performer in 2002-03, averaging 11 points and seven rebounds, and was leading the school in scoring (19.2) and rebounding (7.9) before transferring to New Mexico after 14 games of his sophomore season.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Most people expect to see Granger picked either right before or right after Joey Graham. Graham is the more athletic of the two, but Granger has a more polished all-around game and is a better defender. Granger could go as high as No. 7 to Toronto or as low as No. 14 to Minnesota.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Michael Finley

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Matt Harpring

    ROLE PROJECTION: Starting small forward.

POSITIVES: Granger was asked to do it all by a modestly talented New Mexico team, and he responded by producing a versatile effort every night. Playing primarily at power forward, he often was in the playmaker's role, hitting cutters produced by double-teams against him. He was a big-time rebounder and should bring some of that toughness to the NBA, even if he is at small forward more often. He is an improving perimeter shooter, although he scored most of his points bringing the ball to the basket in college.

SHORTCOMINGS: Granger is a student of the game, and as such he knows that players chosen high in the draft are expected by fans to be big scorers. Granger can score, but that has never been what he's all about. NBA scouts appreciate all the little things he does well, but less knowledgeable fans may blame him if the team he joins struggles and needs points. He is the type of player that grows on you, and he will grow on fans if his new team gives him a chance to show the breadth of his skills.

    http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20...ny_Granger.htm
Biography: Granger had a distinguished career in both athletics and academics, graduating in the top ten percent of his high school class and being named an Honorable Mention All-American. Granger actually began his college career at Bradley University. He transferred after his sophomore year to New Mexico University where he picked up right where he left off at Bradley by leading the Mountain West Conference in scoring and rebounding.

ESPN Summary: Some scouts laughed at us when we put Granger in the lottery in February. Now it looks like he could go as high as No. 4. A versatile forward who does just about everything well.

OVERVIEW: Green scored a game-high 24 points and made six 3-pointers in the McDonald's All-American Game and also won the
slam dunk contest. A two-time All-State selection, Green averaged 33 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists as a senior after leading his school to a 39-2 record as a junior. He also was selected MVP of the Reebok ABCD All-Star Camp in the summer of 2004.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Green could be chosen as high as third, but the fact that Portland has stated they will listen to all suitors for the third pick makes his situation unpredictable. He might still go third if Portland trades the pick, but most teams trying to get to No. 3 want to move up to take a point guard. If the Paul-Williams-Felton trio somehow moves ahead of him, then he would be there for Utah (sixth), Toronto or New York. There is no way he will still be on the board past the eighth pick.

COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Tracy McGrady, Joe Johnson

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Kedrick Brown

ROLE PROJECTION: Athletic wing player, eventual starter at small forward.

POSITIVES: Green has easy college 3-point range. He also is an explosive athlete who can blow by defenders on his way to the basket. Unlike many teenage phenoms coming in to the NBA, he doesn't have to get all of his points by driving to the basket. Because of his prowess from the perimeter, he can more easily gain playing time early in his career while he continues to develop his overall game.

SHORTCOMINGS: Green has played only two seasons of high school basketball. He hasn't had a lot of time to make the mental adjustment from big man in high school to first-round NBA draft pick and the expectations that entails. Green is so athletic that everything he tried at the high school level worked. His mental toughness and fortitude will be tested when he tries the same moves against the best players in the world

http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20...rald_Green.htm Biography: Green is the first high school player that this site has prepared a profile on and barring any seismic changes in the landscape of the NBA Draft, will most likely be the first high school player selected in the NBA Draft this year. Green is a bit of a late bloomer on the national scene. He did not get much playing time his freshman year and was lightly regarded his sophomore year. However, with his transfer to Gulf Shores, Green's game exploded and he began to garner attention with not only his play there but on the AAU and summer camp circuit. Now, Green is the top prospect in his class (originally he committed to Oklahoma State, but he's not going anywhere near Stillwater) and now he's headed to the NBA as the first high school pick in the draft.

ESPN Summary: The top high school player in the country and one of the draft's best athletes is still very raw, but once he learns how to play, watch out. The Lakers have been trying to move up to get him.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...l-forwards.htm
OVERVIEW: Ilyasova, one of the top young shooters in Turkey, made 47% (17-of-36) of his shots in 11 games in the Turkish League. This past season, Ilyasova averaged 4.5 points and 3.2 rebounds in 12.5 minutes for Ulker, posting season highs of 16 points in 27 minutes vs. Raks ITU. Ilyasova excelled in the European Championship for Junior Men (Under-18) in 2004, averaging 17.4 points and nine rebounds in 25.8 minutes over five games.
LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Bottom half of first round. Ilyasova makes sense for any team that does not need him to produce right away. Indiana at 17 is one possible place for him. Denver at 20 or 22 is another.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Andrei Kirilenko

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Scott Padgett

ROLE PROJECTION: Long-term project; scoring small forward

POSITIVES: Ilyasova can flat-out shoot from the perimeter. He has the kind of stroke that defenders honor and helps the whole team, since opponents won't dare double-team off him. As a defender, he uses his athletic ability to his advantage to block shots and sky for rebounds. His rebounding comes when he outquicks opponents to the ball, not from overpowering anybody.

SHORTCOMINGS: At 210 pounds, Ilyasova is very light and his frame doesn't indicate he will gain lots of weight in the future. He also has had some injuries in Europe, raising the question of how durable he might be in the future. His current recovery from a serious ankle injury is one of the questions about him.

ESPN Summary: Many veteran international scouts actually believe that Ilyasova is a better prospect than Korolev and is more NBA-ready. If Ilyasova didn't have so many questions about a bum ankle, he'd be in the lottery. However, with questions still swirling about him, he's not a lock for the first round.

    Combine Rank:...............54
Projected Pick:...............Mid teens to mid twenty's.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...int-guards.htm
OVERVIEW: One of the top point guards in the nation, Jack led Georgia Tech in scoring (15.5), assists (4.5), 3-point percentage (44.2) and steals (1.8) this past season. He was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference second team, his second straight year with a league honor. He became the sixth player in Yellow Jackets' history to surpass 1,000 points and 500 assists in his career. Stands fifth on the school's all-time list in both assists (543) and steals (183). Earned Most Outstanding Player honors in the St. Louis Regional in 2004, as he led Georgia Tech to a surprising appearance in the national title game against Connecticut.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: There is a wide range of opinion on where Jack might go in the draft. Some feel he will be snapped up by the mid-teens, with more than the usual amount of NBA teams hunting for a point guard. Jack is rated after the upper crust of point guards but is a very solid performer. If Toronto gets the big player it covets at No. 7, it might snatch Jack at 16. But if he doesn't go there, Jack might bounce all the way to Sacramento at 23 or Houston at 24.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Chauncey Billups

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Antonio Daniels

    ROLE PROJECTION: Starting point guard

POSITIVES: Jack has become a fine shooter with a great mid-range jump shot and a reliable college 3-point shot. Jack is strong and quick enough to get into the lane and disrupt the opposing team's defensive schemes. He has a powerful upper body and can finish at the basket when being fouled by bigger players. He has a big size advantage over the point guard trio expected to go high in the draft.

SHORTCOMINGS: Jack makes all the generic point guard plays and is an excellent scorer. What he lacks is the omniscient feel for the game that only the truly great point guards have. When you see Jack play, you are impressed with his knowledge, strength and shooting ability. But he doesn't make the "How did he see that guy open for a shot?" pass the way Jason Kidd or Steve Nash does.

http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20...rrett_Jack.htm Biography: Played basketball at perennial powerhouse Mount Zion Academy, where he excelled academically. Jack played three years at Georgia Tech where he played against some of the best guards in the country. He outperformed Chris Paul every single time they faced each other while in college.

ESPNSummary: Some teams have Jack ranked ahead of Roko Ukic. Jack is a big, powerful point guard who plays with a lot of toughness, but he turns the ball over way too much.

This past season, Korolev made 53% of his shots from the floor and nearly 40% from the arc.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: The rumor mill has the Clippers taking him at 12, although Indiana would likely snap him up if he lasted to 17.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Rashard Lewis

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Austin Croshere

    ROLE PROJECTION: Scoring small forward.

POSITIVES: Korolev has quickness and ballhandling ability that belie his height. Unlike some of the European prospects who have been dissected for years, Korolev has burst into prominence and into the hearts of scouts in the last year. He showed his vast repertoire of offensive skills in a game for juniors played at the Euroleague Final Four. In addition to his guard-like passing abilities, his shot is getting better all the time. He averaged 16.2 points in 21 games in Russia's junior league and chipped in 6.8 rebounds to boot.

SHORTCOMINGS: Incredibly inexperienced. Playing for the top team in Russia, a team that advanced to the Euroleague Final Four and won the Russian national championship, afforded Korolev few opportunities to grow. Despite that obstacle, he has flourished under the great coaching of Dusan Ivkovic. Korolev might be best served by staying in Russia for another year or two, and the team taking him might have that in mind.

http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20...av_Korolev.htm Biography: First emerged in 2003 on the European junior circuit. He has received very limited playing time in the last two years for his professional team in Russia and has mostly emerged as a prospect playing in junior league tournaments and European basketball camps. His father Igor is a former player himself and is now a coach.

ESPN Summary: Everyone believes the Clippers have promised him at 12. It makes some sense because Korolev has to remind head coach Mike Dunleavy of his son. Still, he could be several years away from contributing. If the Clips don't grab him, though, he could free fall.

OVERVIEW: May's stock rose in the NCAA Tournament, when he was named Most Outstanding Player in the Final Four. He averaged 22.3 points and 10.7 rebounds and shot 67% in six NCAA Tournament games. May set a UNC record with 397 rebounds and became the first Tar Heel to post eight straight double-doubles since Mitch Kupchak in 1975-76. An All-ACC first teamer, May ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in rebounding (10.7), third in scoring (17.5) and shooting (.567).

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: May can relax in the NBA's Green Room while Bogut, Williams and the point guard trio picks up their logo caps. Then things start to get interesting. He is the best low-post scorer in the second group that begins after the point guards are gone. Charlotte would love to get him at No. 13, but there's no guarantee that May will still be around. The Lakers (10) and Orlando (11) could each use his polished low-post game to go along with their more athletic forwards.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Elton Brand

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Samaki Walker

    ROLE PROJECTION: Starting power forward

POSITIVES: May has the strength, shoulders and caboose to be effective against taller, rangier power forwards. He knows how to carve out space on the block, hold his position during an entry pass, and make a decisive move to the rim. He has excellent hands to catch passes in traffic, and he is a vastly improved free-throw shooter, important because that is where he is likely to make his living.

SHORTCOMINGS: May is not unathletic but does not have jump-out-of-the-gym leaping ability. There will be a learning curve for him when he goes up against the Kevin Garnett/Jermaine O'Neal-type power forwards who can sky, but if Elton Brand has figured out how to score against them, May can, too. Weight has always been an issue for May, but he is a hard worker on the court and there is little to suggest he would let this become a career problem.

ESPN Summary: He's skilled around the basket, rebounds and has great hands. He also has weight and height issues, plays below the rim and has been an underachiever in college until recently. Doesn't quite have the huge draft window of Diogu, but doesn't have the upside either.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...ing-guards.htm
OVERVIEW: A first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer as a sophomore after leading the conference in scoring at 20 points per game, McCants fell to a third-team selection this year, missing four games with an intestinal disorder. The shooting guard averaged 16 points and three rebounds and shot 49 percent from the floor, including 42% from the arc. He averaged 17 points and made half of his 30 3-pointers in the NCAA Tournament, garnering a spot on the Final Four All-Tournament Team. McCants finished tied for second in school history with 221 3-pointers made, making at least one in 46 of his final 48 games.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: It will be interesting to see at what point teams cast aside some the negative whispers about McCants' prickly personality and decide his talent is worth the possible side effects. Our guess is that McCants is not chosen in the top 15 but comes into play soon after. Indiana at 17, Memphis at 19 and Denver at 20 and 22 are all possible destinations.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Sidney Moncrief

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Derek Anderson

    ROLE PROJECTION: Starting shooting guard

POSITIVES: McCants is a pure shooter, one of the very few to come from the college ranks in recent years. He is a good enough athlete to create shots for himself, but his real value at the NBA level may be that he has the kind of stroke where he can catch and shoot and make a very high percentage. He has easy range beyond the college 3-point line. In three seasons at North Carolina, he never shot below 41% from the arc. McCants is also a much better athlete than given credit for.

SHORTCOMINGS: McCants has had well-documented trust issues with teammates, sometimes leading him to try to do too much himself. Despite that question about his game, he got along well enough with teammates to be a big part of North Carolina's national championship team. Most who spent time around him feel that his intensity can be channeled in a positive direction by the right coaching staff.

ESPN Summary: Next to Chris Taft and Charlie Villanueva, he's got to be the toughest guy in the draft to project at this point. He has the skills of a lottery pick, but background-check red flags combined with some workout problems could tank his stock.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...int-guards.htm
OVERVIEW: A consensus All-American in 2005 as a sophomore and the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman, Paul leaves Wake Forest with 948 career points, 395 assists and 160 steals. His career 3-point percentage of 47% is the second-highest in Deacons history and his 212 assists this past season were the third most in school history and the most since Muggsy Bogues in 1987. Paul started 62 of 63 games during his two years and helped Wake to 48 wins, including a school-record 27 victories last season.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Paul has a very narrow draft range, owing both to his excellent point guard abilities and the need for a point guard among the teams drafting in the first half of the lottery. It appears now that the first three teams won't draft Paul, preferring to go with bigger players. His first good chance to be selected comes at No. 4 with New Orleans. If he doesn't go there, it is likely Charlotte takes him with the fifth overall pick. Utah is sixth and also in the market for a point guard.

COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Tony Parker, Luke Ridnour

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Jay Williams

    ROLE PROJECTION: Immediate starter.

POSITIVES: Paul has a complete package of point guard skills, including the ability to penetrate and set up teammates for shots, shake defenders and get his own shot. He has quick hands and great lateral movement to cause steals and be disruptive playing on-the-ball defense, as well as leadership qualities that enable him to quarterback the team. Paul also has good range on his shot and is deadly out to the college 3-point line.

SHORTCOMINGS: In a word, Paul is short, although not quite as short as first thought. He was listed as 6-0 throughout his college career, but he measured at 6-1 at the NBA's Pre-Draft Camp in Chicago. He is strong for his size but is going to encounter some difficulties playing against the bigger point guards in the league, who will try to post him up. He also just turned 20, so there will be learning curve and a natural maturation process he will need to go through.

http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20...hris_Paul.html Biography: Top high school player out of North Carolina. Paul played in the McDonald's All American game, where he displayed rather rare selflessness for that game by passing for 10 assists. Paul was also a Parade All-American in addition to being a second team USA-Today All American. He had no less of a distinguished career at Wake Forest University. In his freshman year he was an honorable mention All-American and the ACC freshman of the year. He also won the freshman player of the year award on the national level from several news outlets. This year he had no less distinguished of the year, leading his team to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they were upset by the West Virginia Mountaineers.
ESPN Summary: Paul is the complete point guard prospect. He's quick, athletic, shoots the ball extremely well, and most important, is a true floor general who knows how to lead.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...r-forwards.htm
OVERVIEW: Taft, considered by many a top-15 pick in the draft, didn't make any of the three All Big East Teams this season after averaging 13.3 points and 7.5 rebounds. He led the conference in shooting (.580). The New York High School Player of the Year as a senior, Taft was the Big East Rookie of the Year and a third team All-Big East selection as a freshman, averaging 10.9 points and 7.5 rebounds.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Earlier thought to be a certain lottery selection, Taft's listless play and lack of fire have probably cost him anywhere from five to 10 spots in the draft and millions of dollars in salary on his first contract. He is still projected to be chosen anywhere from 18-26. Denver has two picks (20, 22) in that range.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Antonio Davis

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Chris Wilcox

    ROLE PROJECTION: Starting power forward

POSITIVES: Taft has uncommon strength and leaping ability. He has a very muscular frame combined with the ability to leap over most players for rebounds. With the help of a strength and conditioning program in the NBA, Taft could be the type of power forward who would actually strike fear into the hearts of opposing teams. He should develop into the type of player who routinely hits double figures in points and rebounds.

SHORTCOMINGS: Taft heard he would be a first-round pick after a wonderful freshman season at Pitt, then decided he could coast and not work to improve his game. Most telling: in the final minutes of several close games this season, Taft was not even on the court for the Panthers, much less a go-to guy in crunch time. His attitude needs to be improved and our guess is it will be, because nobody likes to get embarrassed in the NBA, and that is what Taft will be if he doesn't get better.

http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20...hris_Taft.html Biography: Played basketball at perennial powerhouse Xaverian High School. Taft was named New York State high school player of the year his senior year and more importantly, earned the nickname "Big Ticket" which has followed him to this day. Taft played two years at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was named to the Big East All-Rookie team his freshman year. He was also named to the All-Big East third team that year. This year he took a step back, only earning honorable mention all-Big East honors.

ESPN Summary: On potential, he's a lottery pick. On heart and desire, he's a second-rounder. Right now, most teams seem to be down on him, but we've heard his name everywhere from Golden State at No. 9 to the second round. I'm not sure anyone in the history of the draft has had such a dramatic gap in the draft range.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...int-guards.htm
OVERVIEW: Ukic began playing with KK Split's senior team during the 2000-01 season and has improved his numbers with each campaign. Ukic's scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals totals have increased with each season, topping off this past year when the 21-year-old averaged 18.5 points, 4.3 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.9 steals. His scoring and assist averages each ranked third in the Adriatic League, and he ranked second in the circuit with 35.2 minutes per game.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Ukic is probably battling Jarrett Jack of Georgia Tech in the hearts of NBA teams. Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Raymond Felton are point guards expected to be chosen in the first eight picks. Teams that want a point guard after that are comparing Jack and Ukic. Jack is stronger and a better shooter, while Ukic has the pass-first mentality and more height. Look for Ukic to go to Memphis (19), Sacramento (23) or Utah (27).

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Marko Jaric

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Bryce Drew

ROLE PROJECTION: Eventual starting point guard

POSITIVES: Ukic is a tall point guard with a flair for passing. He has a lot of high-level experience with the ball in his hands, making decisions while playing with and against veteran Croatian players. Ukic has the great point guard size that so many of the other top points guards available this year lack. He has a great feel for the game and gets the ball to shooters at just the right time. He also has got quick hands to deflect the ball in the passing lanes.

SHORTCOMINGS: Ukic lacks upper body strength and is not a great outside shooter. Most European guards are better marksmen than him. He is still very young and has plenty of time to adjust to the quicker, rougher NBA game.

ESPN Summary: Had a great season in Croatia and then wowed scouts in Treviso at the Euroleague big man camp. Has great size for the position and sees the floor extremely well, but still needs to work on that jumper.

OVERVIEW: Averaged 11.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 24.2 minutes per game for Unicaja Malaga, one of the most talented teams in Europe. The 22-year-old also averaged 8.4 points and 4.4 boards in 19 minutes per game in the Euroleague, shooting 69% — second best in the league. Vazquez was a member of the 2002 silver medal team at the European Under-20 Championship, averaging over nine points per game for the Spanish National team.
LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: For the last several months, Vazquez has been regarded as a lottery pick. He has an existing contract with Malaga that has a couple of seasons to go, but the buyout is expected to be reasonable, although there has been some indication the team would like to keep in Spain him for one more year. Regardless of these factors, he is expected to be considered by Utah at No. 6 and not past the 10th pick.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Mehmet Okur

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Nick Collison

ROLE PROJECTION: Immediate rotation player, eventual starter at power forward.

POSITIVES: Vazquez has great hands and has shown great tenacity in battling for rebounds. He doesn't have a great deal of weight but has big shoulders and will be able to add weight as the years go on. He has an excellent face-the-basket jumper to 15 feet and his shooting touch is such that he should be able to extend that range over the years. He has improved quite rapidly this past season, helping his team reach the Spanish League semifinals.

SHORTCOMINGS: Vazquez is an aggressive player, but at 235 pounds, he will get shoved around a bit as a rookie in the NBA. His skills with the basketball are better than most American-born big men coming out of college these days, but there's no substitute for muscle when you play power forward in the NBA. He will also have the usual one-year adjustment period most European players experience in their first NBA season.

ESPN Summary: Everyone believes the Clippers have promised him at 12. It makes some sense because Korolev has to remind head coach Mike Dunleavy of his son. Still, he could be several years away from contributing. If the Clips don't grab him, though, he could free fall.

OVERVIEW: An incredibly talented but enigmatic power forward, Villanueva averaged 13.6 points and 8.3 rebounds as a sophomore this season, earning All-Big East Conference honors. He shot 52 % from the floor and 69% at the charity stripe. In his last 10 games, Villanueva scored 20 points on five occassions and recorded 10-plus rebounds six times, averaging 18.2 points and 9.7 rebounds during that span. As a freshman, he averaged 8.9 points and 5.3 rebounds.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Villanueva probably comes into play at about 14, when Minnesota picks a player it hopes will complement Kevin Garnett. New Jersey at 15, Toronto at 16 and Indiana at 17 are all teams with a degree of interest in Villanueva.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Drew Gooden

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Derrick Coleman

ROLE PROJECTION: Eventual starting power forward

POSITIVES: Catch him on the right night, and Villanueva will fill up a scouting notebook with superlatives: he can run, rebound, shoot, block shots, take the ball to the basket and even score in the post. If he plays with desire, Villanueva has the kind of body and skills that could result in his shooting 10 free throws a game. That's how Karl Malone made himself a Hall of Famer.

SHORTCOMINGS: Villanueva doesn't bring his A game every night. Some nights at Connecticut, he looked like just another good college player, but certainly not like an easy NBA first-round pick. Concentration, motivation and dedication are all question marks for Villanueva. If he answers these questions affirmatively, he will be an excellent value pick in the middle of the first round. NBA people hope his maturity will eventually catch up to his skills.

ESPN Summary: Villanueva has the skill and intelligence to go very high but questions about work ethic and so-so athleticism have dogged him. He's all over the board, though many teams believe he has a suitor in the teens.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...l-forwards.htm
OVERVIEW: Warrick completed his Syracuse career fourth in school history with 2,073 points and 1,025 rebounds, adding 297 dunks in his 135-game career. The forward, who scored in double figures in his last 61 games, earned Big East Conference Player of the Year this season, averaging 21.4 points and 8.6 rebounds, while shooting 55% from the floor. He scored a career-high 36 points in his final home regular-season game against Providence. A first-team all-conference selection as a junior and senior, Warrick was the league's most improved player as a sophomore, when he improved his scoring average from 6.1 points to 14.8.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Speculation in the days leading up to the draft was that Golden State, which has the ninth pick, is sold on Warrick. While such rumors float around every year, it is obvious that Warrick has performed well in team workouts, as many teams admitted they were thrilled by his incredible athletic ability. Warrick's draft position has garnered an unusual amount of attention, as some feel he could drop all the way to the late teens. Our guess is he doesn't fall past 16, where Toronto is poised to make the second of its two first-round picks.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Tayshaun Prince

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Eddie Griffin

ROLE PROJECTION: Eventual starter at small forward.

POSITIVES: Warrick has a 38-inch vertical jump and a 7-2 wingspan. Put those together, and you have one of the most dynamic dunkers to come into the NBA in a while. In the last two seasons, Warrick has improved the consistency and range of his jump shot. He is now solid out to 16 feet and favors a turnaround jumper (think Elvin Hayes) that is nearly impossible to block. He is quite a bit stronger than he looks and has the length to bother players taller than he is close to the basket.

SHORTCOMINGS: Warrick is a bit of a tweener, not hefty enough to guard the stronger power forwards in the NBA and yet not possessing the type of ballhandling ability associated with small forward. Despite being a hard worker in Syracuse's strength program, Warrick has not been able to add much weight, weighing at 215 pounds at the NBA Pre-Draft Camp. However, Warrick is just as hard for other teams to match up with. He's too tall and long to be guarded by most small forwards, and too quick for burly big forwards.

ESPN Summary: Super athlete who plays like he's on a trampoline, but he's trying to make the switch to small forward. His shot is improving, but his ballhandling and perimeter defense still need a lot of work. Just needs to find the right up-tempo team.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...ing-guards.htm
OVERVIEW: Averaged 27.7 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists as a senior at Seattle Prep. Posted season-high 46 points against Eastside Catholic and 40 points (17-of-20 free throws) and 11 rebounds in an 80-70 victory over Rainier Beach that earned Seattle Prep its first Metro League title. The 18-year-old, who is the cousin of Mavericks point guard Jason Terry, played in the McDonald's All-America game and finished third in the slam dunk contest. He was named to the 2005 USA Men's Junior National Select Team and was named one of 10 finalists for the 2005 national Naismith Trophy.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Webster could go to the Knicks at No. 8 or could last a while, perhaps all the way down to the Clippers at 12. Golden State (9) is looking for a big player, and the Lakers (10) would like a player with more versatility. Orlando is interested at 11 and so are the Clippers at 12.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Glen Rice

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Lamond Murray

    ROLE PROJECTION: Designated shooter

POSITIVES: Webster is a terrific shooter with a strong body, which helps him shoot it long without his shot flattening out. Unlike so many of the high school players trying to make the jump to the NBA, Webster has a muscular body and already is the height and weight of prototype small forwards in the NBA. He is able to fake the long-range shot, get people up in the air, then take a dribble or two and hit a mid-range pull-up, the staple of any NBA shooter's game.

SHORTCOMINGS: Webster will be guarding some of the elite athletes in the world while playing small forward. As an athletically gifted and strong high school player, he is used to overwhelming his defenders. In the NBA, he will be the one who is overwhelmed, at least for a while.

http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20...ll_Webster.htm Biography: Webster starred at Seattle Prep High School and he committed to play college basketball at the University of Washington. It became clear quickly that he was an NBA prospect after a senior year where he was named a first-team high school All-American by several media news outlets, starred in the McDonald's All Star Game where he scored 16 points and flirted with NBA agents Aaron and Eric Goodwin. He's in the NBA for good now, having signed an agent and he'll go in the lottery.

ESPN Summary: One of the best two or three shooters in the draft. He already has an NBA body and is mature beyond his years. He should be able to play immediately. Think a young Glen Rice.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...int-guards.htm
OVERVIEW: Williams set an Illinois record with 264 assists this season and became the first player in Big Ten history to lead the conference in assists three straight seasons. The point guard earned first team all-conference honors and was the Most Outstanding Player of Chicago Region after totaling 43 points and 18 assists against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Arizona. He averaged 12.5 points and 6.8 assists as a junior. In his three-year career, Williams averaged 11 points, 5.9 assists and shot 42% from the floor, 37% from the arc and 69 % from the foul line.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Likely to be picked either fourth, fifth or sixth. He is supposed to be the favorite with New Orleans, which picks fourth, but that team is still listening to trade offers from other teams seeking a point guard. If he doesn't go to the Hornets, Charlotte or Utah, next in line, would like to grab him. It would surprise draft observers if he gets past the sixth spot in the draft.

COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Andre Miller, Mark Jackson

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Alvin Williams

    ROLE PROJECTION: Immediate starter.

POSITIVES: Williams has that omniscient feel for the game that cannot be taught. He invariably makes the right decision, sending the ball to the teammate who is in the best position to score. He has broad shoulders and was able to physically dominate his competition at the college level. While he will find some stronger point guards in the NBA, he has the kind of solid body that has served Andre Miller well in the pros. Williams is just average as a perimeter shooter, but word is that in team workouts he has shown improvement even from the end of the college season.

SHORTCOMINGS: Williams is not the fastest point guard. He doesn't have the breakaway speed of Chris Paul or Raymond Felton. At least initially, teams will play off him and make him prove that his jump shot is a threat. If it's not, he will have trouble getting to the basket in the NBA. He's talented enough to make good passes out on the perimeter anyway, but to be a star he'll have to find a way to create some penetration, and the best way to do that is keep defenses honest with a consistent jump shot.

http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20..._Williams.html Biography: Played basketball at basketball powerhouse The Colony high school in Texas. Highly recruited out of high school, and chose to attend Illinois. Started all three years at Illinois. Chosen in his sophomore and junior years to the All-Big Ten first team and named to several All-America teams in his junior year. His stock went up dramatically during his junior year as he led his Illinois team to the NCAA championship game against North Carolina. He's also played extensively on the international level, playing on the U.S. men's junior team before his sophomore and junior years, leading the teams to a third and fifth place finish in their respective tournaments.

ESPN Summary: Some scouts believe that because of Williams' size, he may be the best point guard prospect in the draft. While he sees the floor as well as Paul, he's not quite the athlete or the shooter.Summary: Some scouts believe that because of Williams' size, he may be the best point guard prospect in the draft. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...l-forwards.htm
OVERVIEW: Williams, the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, averaged 11.6 points and 6.6 rebounds despite not starting
a single game for the national champion Tar Heels this season. Williams was projecetd as a lottery pick out of high school after averaging 29 points, 15.5 rebounds, five blocks and five assists at Bremerton High School in Washington, but he chose to go to North Carolina for one season.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Either the first or second overall pick. If Williams is not picked first overall by Milwaukee, Atlanta could entertain trade offers for the No. 2 pick, but that would affect Williams' destination, not his draft position.

COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Tracy McGrady, Richard Jefferson

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Joe Smith

    ROLE PROJECTION: Future superstar

POSITIVES: Williams is explosive going to the basket and already is able to pull up and shoot a smooth, balanced shot when his drives are cut off. He has shown the ability to shoot confidently out to the college 3-point line and is an excellent free-throw shooter. He not only is a high flyer but also can go up two or three times for a rebound without losing lift. He has a perfect NBA small forward's frame.

SHORTCOMINGS: Williams doesn't have much high-level basketball experience, having played as the sixth man on North Carolina's championship team as a freshman. With most players who have this little experience, there is a grace period while they get accustomed to the pace, physicality and mental demands of the NBA game. Williams seems to be such a complete package, coaches, fans and teammates won't have much patience with anything but a rapid transition to the NBA game.

http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20..._Williams.html Biography: He has what has to be the coolest full name of anyone in this draft. Marvin's middle name is "Gaye" making him "Marvin Gaye" Williams. At any rate, Williams was a McDonald's and Parade All American in high school, and many thought he would declare for the draft out of high school. Instead he went to the University of North Carolina, where he was a crucial part of their national championship team averaging 11 points and 6 rebounds a game as the first man off the bench. Now he's not only a lock for the first round, but also a virtual lock for top-three status in this draft.

ESPN Summary: Williams is Insider's No. 1-ranked player in the draft. He's a versatile forward who can play both inside and out. Still developing but has the trappings of a superstar.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baske...ing-guards.htm
OVERVIEW: An All-Big 12 Conference selection, Wright averaged 17.8 points, six rebounds and 2.2 assists this season. An excellent outside shooter, the junior converted 50% of his shots — up from 36% in his first two years — and 45% of his 159 shots from the arc. He tallied 32 points against Colorado and made seven 3-pointers against Texas Tech. Wright was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2003, averaging 14.5 points and 6.6 rebounds.

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: A year ago, people would have laughed if you had told them Wright would be billed as a shooter as a draft
prospect. But through 31 games as a junior, Wright proved that his vastly improved shooting was no fluke, and that he had not only defined better shot selection but also mastered the college 3-point line. He has shot the ball extremely well in team workouts and now is slated to be drafted anywhere from Nos. 10 to 17. Orlando at 11 and New Jersey at 15 are said to be particularly interested.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Allan Houston

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Jeff Trepagnier

    ROLE PROJECTION: Wing player.

POSITIVES: Wright has turned around the perception of him as just another trigger-happy athlete who never met a shot he didn't like. That might have the been the Wright of his first two college seasons, but as a junior he showed knowledge of the game and maturity that was previously lacking. He has excellent range and confidence out to the college 3-point line and enough size and athleticism to play two spots.

SHORTCOMINGS: Wright is not an off-the-charts athlete. He will come up against quicker players at the 2 and 3 spots in the NBA than those he dominated in college. He was by far the best player on his college team ever since he set foot on campus and now will have to learn how to play a role — at least initially — in the NBA. His maturity and mental fortitude will be tested.

http://www.ownthedraft.com/Player%20...ine_Wright.htm Biography: Wright was highly recruited out of high school and surprised many by choosing Texas A&M a program that was on the down and out. There was actually talk after his winning the Big 12 freshman of the year award that he would come out of the draft after his sophomore year. Wright had a disappointing sophomore year and was forced to return for his junior season in which he improved almost of his statistical numbers and led Texas A&M to the brink of the NCAA tournament.

ESPN Summary: Do-it-all swingman has been working out great, but some red flags were raised by his less-than-impressive athletic performance at the Chicago combine.

I don't know, I mean we already have David Harrison as our center for the future, right? Wouldn't this be a waste of a pick when we can nab a swingman who can fill a need?
