The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

  • I don't get it...

I’ve been away from these forums for a long time, due to the site being blocked, and my short time back has deeply saddened me. I know how all this works, and I know that I am going to get torched for this post, but what I have seen/read since I have managed to get back on the sight just floors me.

I get that this team was not “thrilling” to watch all season, and that there were a LOT of issues. I watched us get swept in the playoffs for the first time in Pacers history. I get that all you read in the news and sports “authorities” claim that PG is leaving and going to LA. I see that there is a lot of angst, animosity, and butt hurtedness within this fan base, but come on….What makes this team so “awful” that we need to have a fire sale, trade away our best player, get rid of Bird, fire Nate, and hell, while we’re at it, let’s “tar and feather Simon for being a cheap ass”….

Now, let’s start off talking about getting swept by the Cavs….You know, the defending NBA Champs, the team that Lebron calls home again, the team that many would consider a lock to make the NBA Finals for the 3rd straight year…That is one hell of a team. Many on this very same board stated we wouldn’t get out of the first round, hell it was claimed we shouldn’t even have made it into the playoffs. We took one of, if not the best, team in the NBA to task for four straight games, losing all four games by a TOTAL of 16 points. Going into the series, the Cavs had averaged 5.2 more points and 1.8 more rebounds than the Pacers. Let’s also not forget that Lebron and company rested for the last 4 games of the season while the Pacers fought for their dignity. Let’s also not forget that the Lebron led Cavs have always been our kryptonite. We match up poorly with them, and require our best player to be at his best on both end of the court in guarding Lebron. I also know that we blew a 26 point lead in game 3, but THAT was the coaches fault. I don’t want to get into all of that again, and rehash that pathetic display of team management, but you can’t put that all on the players, that L goes solely on the man putting the wrong combination on the floor to be effective, and not making the appropriate changes on both offense and defense to maintain the lead. While I am disappointed in getting swept, I was impressed with the heart of this team to come out and fight all four games, all the while being harshly scrutinized and ignored by masses. No one expected the Pacers to put up a fight against the Cavs, and at one point, that series should’ve been 2-1 Pacers….How would your opinions have changed if that were the case??

Onto Paul…The cumulative response on this board seems to be that he’s leaving, so **** on him….I don’t get it. I haven’t heard/read anything that I can consider credible, that guarantees his departure. All the speculation on what is in one man’s head is ridiculous. Paul hates Larry, Simon won’t pay, Paul hates his teammates and calls them out publicly, Paul is a diva, the list goes on and on and on. That **** is all speculation, and not backed by ANY facts. This was Paul’s first year having to step up and be the true leader of the team. Did you really expect him to be flawless? One guy CAN’T do it all. Myles is young, Teague has been criticized his entire career for being emotionless, Stuckey, Monte, and RG3 have been somewhat injury prone, CJ is streaky, and Paul….Paul believes that he should be getting the same calls that Lebron does, and when those calls aren’t going his way, he begins to play hero ball, and tries to do too much by himself. Does he complain to the refs a lot, yes he does, and that is one of my biggest criticisms against him, but damn.

The bottom line is the media doesn’t want Paul to stay in Indy, and all this negativity coming from the fan base, only helps to push him out the door. I, for one, hold out hope that Paul sees where this team has been, and where it is going. I believe that the front office will do what they can to reach out and bring talent to Indy to play alongside Paul. I do think that Paul needs to get out there and hit the recruiting path as well. Lebron had a big hand in recruiting his supporting cast in both Miami and Cleveland. Kobe used to do the same, and would meet with possible pickups/trades when they were brought in by the Lakers. Paul needs to use that AllStar status and pull to help get talent. He is the reason they are coming to Indy, nothing else.

Paul also needs to determine what he wants out of his career. Does he want to be known as a ring chaser, or does he want to have a legacy. Staying in Indy, and helping to build a championship roster that brings Indy it’s first NBA Championship, would cement Paul’s seat amongst those considered basketball royalty. Chasing a ring like KD, and becoming a team hopper like Melo, and countless others, will ultimately have a negative effect on Paul’s place in NBA history.

I get that there are a lot of raw emotions out there, and that this forum seems to be either fight or flight, but damn, the addition of Lance brought out a fire that wasn’t there the entire season, and even managed to pull some emotions out of Teague. We’ve got a good thing going here, and I truly believe that we are on the cusp of being great. Now is not the time to bail on this team. Now is the time for encouragement and hope, positivity and loyalty. Now is the time for the Pacers and their fan base to show the rest of the NBA what the Pacers stand for, and that Indiana is STILL basketball country.

    Flame away…

    Re: I don't get it...

LeBron James is not known as a ring chaser. Kevin Durant will not be known as a ring chaser. At the end of it all the only thing that matters is how many rings you have. But Paul George going to LA would not mean automatic rings. The guy gave us a solid career here. I can't blame him at all. I'm glad he gave us what he did. I want him to go on & win a title because he isn't going to do that here. Especially if he's eating up almost half our cap space. I still don't believe he would resign here if he was able to sign for the mega max. Isn't the extra $$ we can give him but other teams can't just on an extra year? I think he'd rather have a 5 year max than a 6 year max, so us being able to give him an extra year is useless IMO. These guys always opt out of the final year....here he'd have to wait an extra year to opt out.

The right move for this franchise is to get max value for him this summer. Use him to rebuild. If we can get what I think we can I expect this team to be better next year than if we kept him.

The last thing this franchise can afford is PG walking for nothing next summer. With 1 full year left on his deal the only thing to do is trade him. And I expect that to be done in the next 50 days or so.

      Re: I don't get it...

I think a lot of the frustration stems from the idea that this team under-achieved. Before the season started, many people (me included) thought this could be a top 3 or 4 team in the East on paper. However, I think several players did not perform at the level that we wanted, the first being Monta Ellis. He is done as a starter as far as I'm concerned. He is best as the number one offensive option on a team, but he was our fourth option. He is not a good fit at all with the way this roster is currently constructed. The second player that comes to mind is Thad Young. I really like Thad and his effort, but I think we fell into the trap of thinking because he averaged 15 points and 9 rebounds in Brooklyn, he would do the same in Indiana. That obviously just isn't the case.

As far as Paul George is concerned, he has had plenty of experience being a leader up to this point. This was not his first year as being the true leader of the team. Once David West walked out of the door, this became Paul's team. The fact is that he acted like a leader should not. He consistently threw teammates under the bus, while claiming that he could not do it all alone. The last time I checked, a team wins and loses together. He consistently whines to the refs if he does not get calls, and puts his team in a bad position defensively. I can't tell you how many times I saw him whine, while the other team runs up the court in a fast break. I think becoming this good in the league has gotten to his head. The fact that he hasn't won a championship yet is frustrating, and it's starting to boil over and show. With that being said, I do not want to see him leave. He's a hell of a ball player, and I hope he's like Reggie in the fact that he wants to stay here his whole career. However I do think he needs to take a new approach to leadership. It is true that this roster still needs work, but Paul George can do several things himself in order to help the team.

I think the best for this team going forward isn't anything too dramatic. We should definitely sign some players and draft to boost our bench, but we shouldn't blow it up. We need to let our young players develop, specifically Myles and Lance. I don't believe Lance has really hit his ceiling yet, and obviously Myles hasn't. The worst thing this team can do is to try the quick fix strategy. This does not work if it doesn't involve bringing in multiple superstars. People don't realize how hard winning a championship in the NBA really is. At it's current state, if you're not on a list of 5 teams or so, then your chance of winning a championship is next to zero. That's five out of thirty teams. I think the NFL is in a state of parity (albeit Beli-cheat is still winning), while the NBA is in the exact opposite.

I wouldn't consider LeBron joining Miami ring chasing, because up to that point that team as it was built hadn't been too successful. However, Kevin's situation is entirely different, because that team had just set the record for most wins in a season. It's not like he joined a team that was mediocre to elevate the team's status as well as to possibly win a ring. If he had gone to let's say the Wizards to team up with Wall, he wouldn't be the most hated player in the NBA. Let's say Paul George does leave the Pacers and join the Lakers, it would be to move closer to home, to bring a storied franchise back from the dumps and into championship contention, with the possibility to win a couple. That is a much more respectable reason to join a team than what Kevin Durant did.

That sounded really positive. You don't see that on this forum much anymore. Why aren't people talking about CP3 leaving the Clips? He should come to Indiana to join PG13. Trade anyone you can not named Turner, Young and George if you can improve the team.

I would imagine that's the plan but there's a 0% chance of that happening. Thad wouldn't even bring back anything that would improve this team. That trade last draft for him was a win now move & this team didn't win. Now he's basically a waste here, especially when Paul leaves. Thad's only eating up cap space when we could have had a young rookie to build with on a rookie deal till 2021 then matches any offer since he would be a RFA.

I would try & do what BKN did with him last year & offer him to a contender with cap space for their 1st round pick. But no team would do that.

Like the Pacers need his help not getting past the second round at best? We do that fine on our own.

Point is small market teams don't matter unless you have a superstar that matters that is established and can get people to come to their team like LeBron and Curry.

PG13 isn't at that level(despite being a better overall player than Steph)

That's really the crux of the problem though, outside of those three players who on our team really has any trade value? You will get very limited returns for GR3, Kevin Seraphine or Aaron Brooks. You will get virtually nothing for Joe Young, Rakeem Christmas, George Niang and Lance Stephenson. You literally will have to give up something else to get teams to take Al Jefferson, Monta Ellis or LaVoy Allen. You could combine almost any combination of those players together and you will still get back nothing of value.

This is the indictment of Bird right here. Other than Paul George and Myles Turner we have no real trade-able assets other than our draft pick to work with. The players he has signed the past 2-3 years have typically been old veteran players who are at the end of their ropes. Yes, it hasn't cost us much in terms of money but at the end of the day it also give us no equity to go forward with either. That really is why some, myself included, are really down trodden is because other than hitting a homerun with the 18th pick in the draft (even then what is the likely hood that player impact the team year 1) there really is no sound way to surround Paul with the talent he is going to want to compete for a title.

"We've got to be very clear about this. We don't want our players hanging around with murderers," said Larry Bird, Pacers president.

well said. This is how i feel. i'm not thrilled to trade PG13, but we are kinda of in a hole and it seems to be the best way out. We simply need to restock assets.

If you wanna boil it down even more, David West is actually the reason.

I just saw an interesting piece on hoopshype via Indy Star: Says, "Larry Bird was unwilling to deal PG at the deadline." This to me means want I've been thinking. Larry stepped down because a trade is inevitable.

Draft Lottery is a big night. We need LA in that top 2.

                        Re: I don't get it...

I joined this board (had lurked for maybe two years before I got courage to ask for registration) on 10th of February 2014.

As far as I can remember we were still leading NBA on that date with a mostly young team and had an exciting future looming...

Since that date until this weekend, our Front Office has basically done ONE thing right!!! Drafting Myles Turner can not be criticised, especially for 11th pick.

...every single decision except that one has been lacklustre at best and often much worse than that...

I have hated what has happened to my team... hated it so, so deeply.

The 1st positive thing for a long time was Bird stepping away. Literally.

                          Oh, so you're to blame...
"We've got to be very clear about this. We don't want our players hanging around with murderers," said Larry Bird, Pacers president.

One thing that I see with many of us on the board and maybe some with management and ownership is a lack of patience. PG could fit in that category as well.
There is no rule that says the Pacers have to be a contender next year. If managment would continue to get one or two good players each year and not necessarily another superstar maybe one of those young players developes into a star. If PG stays a big question is do you sign Teague. How much will he cost?
Bring PG into the discussion and let him see you have a plan.
Small markets need to be smarter. Can we have the Spurs GM?

                              Re: I don't get it...

Honestly I think people are just bitter. Not a week goes by that somebody doesn't bemoan Vogel not coaching this team or talk about George Hill or say the core should've never been broken up... a core, btw, which featured a 1 dimensional guy who in an instant turned into a malcontent bum and a ringchasing backup big. And people dislike Bird because he dared to get rid of the ghost of Danny Granger for a good young player -- a deal that didn't work out for the Pacers, but was still one you have to take every single time.

And so with people refusing to let all of that go, the fact that the product on the court hasn't been great just turns the resent into general apathy.

Not for me, though. I rooted hard for the Pacers this season, even through the ups and downs. I am optimistic that they will make a big splash this offseason. I hope we keep Paul George, but if not I hope we get a fantastic return that would allow us to remain in the playoff chase immediately. I wouldn't fault PG for leaving, but I hope he stays!
