The owners care, most professional teams don't really provide profits. They can't have that hobby if it's too expensive.

Every NBA team is raking in money now. They've long since gotten cost certainty.

Many NBA teams are worth close to a billion dollars. That doesn't happen if you're operating at a loss.

The only financial losers in this situation are the cities that finance publicly funded stadiums that the private sector won't touch. The owners themselves are printing money. No one is out there looking to sell anymore. Win or lose they all get paid.

When you are a Playoff Bubble Team that is more of a lower Tier Playoff Team that gets swept in 4 games in the 1st round....you prepare for the worst and you modestly build upon whatever you have.

Now....I agree...being a Small Market Team.....while being considered a mediocre Middling Playoff Bubble Team...doesn't help the situation when it comes to spending. But it's not about being a Small Market Team or not....it's about being on the cusp of competing at the highest level or not.

For example....a few years back...we made that trade for Scola in exchange for a 1st+Plumlee. Making a move for ( who we considered ) a solid Player back then to bolster the existing core back then made sense because we were perennial 2nd Round Playoff team. See? It makes sense then. But making such a move like that now is a gamble. Now, I understand why Bird would trade a 1st round pick or Myles....because it will be a last season effort to build a better Team around PG13 in the hopes of convincing him to stay. But unless such a move nets an ELITE Player without gutting the Team while addressing the many other flaws of this Team.....we will just be spinning our wheels again.
Well...yeah. But if we get to that level, I don't want to hear that we're not willing to do what it takes to go all the way due to "the budget."

This is actually quite simple. If Bird had made better moves over the last few years, you would see a) the team would be better and b) the Simons would pay more for that talent.

Hm, interesting this is your take considering how you felt about the Lance offer.

My statement had nothing to do with Lance. Larry should only get praise for bringing him back. Also, Larry did what he could to retain him. Lance's agent steered him wrong though...

You blamed Simon over and over again for not ponying up and being a cheap owner when Lance left!

You claimed Larry knew Lance was special, but was hindered by Simon.

Link please because that is NOT true.

I blamed Simon for playing hard ball not in terms of money. In the way he said "Dude you can take it or leave it"...and he said that near a microphone. That was not a smart move on his part. The other dumb move was acquiring CJ Miles just hours afterwards. That was a message to Lance and his posse (can I say that?), that the Pacers were ready and prepared to move on. THAT is why Lance declined the offer. Huge mistake on his part. Big mistake on Simon. Bird did what he could do.

Maybe someone should tell Herb to purchase some Google and Facebook shares. He'll make out like a bandit.

Budget is certainly one of the issues, but it ranks below:

                      1) Trading Kawhi Leonard for George Hill
                      2) Signing Monta Ellis
                      3) Signing Al Jefferson
                      4) Not enough shooters/rebounding big man

I can't quote you because the "All things Lance" thread is closed, but you said this...

Simon is the one who didn't give out the "blank check". That is, all I am saying is that, IMO Larry Bird didn't set the max on Lance's offer.

Teams that were bought for 30mil are selling for a billion plus, the excuse that the poor owners are having a hard time to put a team together because they can't go over the cap is a bit of an exaggeration.

Edit: well the link I posted show the Pacers making $138mil with operation cost at $19 mil, the team is making a lot of money.
Not sure how they get the operating cost number but payroll for the Pacers is about 90 million this year, so unless someone else is paying the players....

Thank God Bird didn't give him a "blank check" because that would have been an awful deal for the Pacers. Hardball? The Pacers offered him a deal that was superior to what he ended up taking. The problem was that they were dealing with a group of morons who were in over their head.

The Pacers gave Lance the best offer. Lance was a moron advised by a group of morons and thought it was wise to leave $26 million guaranteed dollars on the table. He was so certain that he could go be Magic Johnson somewhere else without the annoying structure that he had here. Well he was catastrophically wrong about that and his career and bank account will suffer miserably. No way in hell do the Clippers or whatever team pick up that team option for $9.4 million next year. His next contract will probably be the bare minimum, so he cost himself millions of millions of dollars. Had he stayed here and developed under our coaching staff, then the next contract would have probably been nice from his perspective.

You blame pretty much everyone but Lance for Lance's situation. Lance just isn't nearly as good as you make him out to be. He is the last player the Pacers need right now. It could have worked out nice for him here if he didn't let the success of two years ago get to his head, but he just couldn't handle being good and it caused him to act like a bonehead....

So, all I was saying there is that Bird isn't the one determining the offer as implied here. Please consider context next time.

In fact, when I said "All I'm saying here", I am clearly not saying that Simon should have given out a blank check. Certainly he shouldn't do that..
