forgot to watch yesterday, saw the highlights today.
loyer seems to be back on track, which is huge.
smith has made an amazing jump from last year imo.
jones is a clear upgrade over jenkins, maybe the best transfer since octeus?
still, the rubber meets the road in the NCAATLeave a comment:

I don't think Purdue could fall out of a #1 seed at this point, especially if it were obvious what Painter was doing, but it's all moot now. They could have fallen out of the overall #1 seed for sure but falling out of the #1 line would've required a flameout in the Big 10 tournament. Now the motivation for the finale is either clinching an outright Big 10 championship (if they lose at Illinois) or preserving a perfect home record for the season, if they beat Illinois, as well as it being Senior Day
It would be nice if Wisconsin would cooperate and continue their downward slide so the bench could get plenty of minutes but if the pattern holds they'll hit 3s early and make it a game. I know it's beating a dead horse but we get everybody's best shot
According to barttorvik.com, Purdue only the 12th best team in the country since Jan 28. UConn #1Last edited by Dab; 03-04-2024, 03:48 PM.Leave a comment:

So if Illinois loses at Wisconsin Saturday that's it, Purdue clinches the regular season Big 10 crown and Coach Painter is presented with a unique opportunity. He can play the starters minimal minutes in the final two games, maybe the first 5 minutes of each half? Or maybe even just the 1st half. Smith would definitely have to stay in longer to run the show, and perhaps TKR, but give major minutes to Furst, Gillis, Heide, Colvin, Morton and bench minutes to Waddell, Berg, Martin and Barrett
This would give Edey, Loyer and Jones some much-needed rest before the tournaments but more importantly would give some big-time game experience (Illinois and Wisconsin) to players who could really benefit from it and that experience would enhance our chances in the tournaments. Sure, we could lose both games but who cares? The regular season crown would already be clinched. And maybe they figure it out and we win one or both. I doubt if Painter would do it but it seems like the winning play to me and you don't get this chance very often, to use actual live games against quality opponents as practice more or less
I guess on Senior Day (Wisconsin) you really want to end the home slate on a winning note and Wisconsin will probably feisty trying to improve their seed so probably not feasible but the Illinois game would be perfect, a really raucous road environment it would really **** them off I'm sure if Painter pulled the starters 5 minutes into the game
In any scenario though you really do need Smith to stay in though to be the on floor coach and for these guys to get actual game experience playing with him. The benefits gained would carry over to next yearLeave a comment:

Some kind of 'major announcement' coming from Mason Gillis soon, not sure what that would be really, don't think he would take a Covid year especially as we're overbooked for next year. Grad assistant?

I don't know about Berg. He seems to move pretty well (he should, he's 50 pounds lighter than Edey) and I was watching a video of him the other day where he was just knocking down 3-pointer after 3-pointer. It wasn't edited to only show his makes either. And I'm betting he started playing at a much younger age than Edey, his reaction times are swift, he doesn't waste any time going up for the dunk if it's there. He's definitely an all-airport team guy but whether he can really contribute is something we'll probably find out next year
From what I've gathered, Painter is moving away from the giant big man in the middle model, and moving towards the more mobile big man. All these bigs he has coming in are decent 3-point shooters. The thinking is that a more free-flowing offense is something that would really take advantage of Braden Smith's skills. I'm wondering if maybe next year we have TKR at the 5 and Furst at the 4, with Berg (or one of the freshman backing up the 5.) I could be wrong but I don't think Furst leaves, I think he's content. Supposedly he doesn't plan on playing after college, other interests, but I can see him being rewarded for his loyalty his senior year. Dude was a great player in high school, he could've been a 4-year starter at a mid-major. He used to be able to shoot the 3, he's probably like 2 of 7 this year
And Painter might have wanted to move that in that direction even before but then EdeyLeave a comment:

Iowa beats the Spartans in East Lansing last night, all of the bubble watches pretty much have (had?) Michigan State in, but a couple more losses like this will put them on the wrong side of the bubble. They're also going to be extremely motivated when they come into Mackey
I wasn't real high on Xavier Booker so it didn't bother me that we didn't get him, and maybe he'll be a good player for them (or somebody) down the road but he has not shown anything for the Spartans this year. That being said, no better time for him to bust out than in his home state
I feel the same way about Flory Bidunga. I don't buy the hype. He may turn out to be a star but we will see. I don't think either of these guys fit into what Purdue is doing but Painter was after Bidunga so what do I know? It will be interesting if after Edey leaves Purdue moves away from the giant big man model to a more mobile version. All the bigs Painter has been recruiting can shoot if from 3
Speaking of recruits, people are raving about CJ Cox from the 2024 class, saying it's another Painter find ? la Braden SmithLeave a comment:

Sounds like there are more Purdue fans in Crisler than Michigan fans
I couldn't find the game anywhere, ended up downloading the CBS Sports App on the Bluestacks Android emulator on PC and watching it that wayLeave a comment:
