Idk I never watched Alize in college. TJD is a very polished post scorer, and a good rebounder. Pretty underwhelming defensively and undersize though probably. Decent athlete, but I'm not sure how he'll look against NBA guys especially right away

He's a pretty big project I think for whoever drafts him, but if they stick with him I think he could turn into an interesting bench piece like a smaller Montrezl Harrell

But in IU’s case, that was the one special thing we still had going. Without it, the emperor truly has no clothes and the program is a truly desolate sight to behold.

IU doesn't make up for it from the FT line.
And the poorly schemed offense causes the team to tighten up as the game goes on, because every shot has such a premium put on it.

I'm having a hard time imagine this season not being Archie's last. There's only the Covid season excuse... which is that any excuse at all? Everybody else is dealing with the same stuff. IU's offense flat out sucks. It has sucked every season for Archie Miller. It continues to suck after four years.

    Turn out the lights...

Just horrendous. Honestly unbelievable how hard this team quit on the season.

It's again incredible how we ran Sampson's guys out of town. This entire team rolled over at 12-9 when people were saying how they could turn into one of the hottest teams in the country heading into the tournament. I didn't think that and said then I thought it was weird people were predicting that, but man, they pretty much said "We don't wanna play in March"

My experience with Tom Allen in person is that he was the real deal. Nothing phony about him. And he definitely made a difference in IU's defense when he took the DC role. So, I had hopes for him taking on the HC role. That didn't mean it was a sure thing. And he did morph his approach. He stayed over the defense in that first year and obviously decided (learned?) it was biting off too much.

Meanwhile, Tom Crean in person was just as outgoing BUT didn't seem all that genuine. I don't remember Crean having the self-deprecating humor that Tom Allen has either. And I have no doubt Allen cares for his players and wants them to respect the game and the university. And they respond. Clearly.

I wish I could remember Allen's story exactly, about being in the airport, leaving Florida for Indiana, and IIRC having an IU shirt on (although could've been a hat or IU logo luggage). So this sparked someone who didn't know him to mention IU and the football program. I believe this was when he'd very first taken the DC role. So the person talking to him said something like "You know IU lost their defensive coordinator? I feel sorry for whoever they get for that job!"
And he said he replied "Well, that's me..." LOL

Allen did a get raise, I'm not sure at this point where they both stand. And yeah Brohm's contract is absolutely insane. It's wild to me that I still have a few Purdue friends that defend it.

And while IU’s football has been impressive the last couple of years, I think they need to win a bowl game before we can say they have truly arrived. They have squandered two golden opportunities to beat SEC schools in a bowl game. That’s really IU basketball/football in a nutshell: always coming up a bit short.
Yeah, but look at what Tom Allen did, his running back coach and defensive coordinator get poached so what's he do? He gets a defensive guru who happens to fit the style we play from the SEC and he poaches his old RB coach from the freaking Kansas City Chiefs. Tom Allen is the real deal.

But they immediately defaulted to a “we do things the right way, blah blah blah” type of response. I say this half seriously and have in jest, but we’d be no worse off all these years later if we had simply tried to cover it all up. Actually I’m completely serious: there is zero chance we’d bed any worse off today if we covered it up.

I agree that Sampson would have had phenomenal results here. In just year two he was already coaching a team with Elite Big Ten results. From what I remember, the entire NCAA was pretty stacked that year (Kansas, D Rose in Memphis, Hansbrough UNC, tough Big 10, etc), so we were already standing out in a tough league.

Sampson would have continuously had good mixes of elite recruits with the 3/4 year guys that Joe mentioned. He would have snagged big instate guys like Langford and Jackson-Davis, but wouldn’t have squandered the opportunities because he could actually coach. IU would have been a consistent Big 10 powerhouse over the last 13 years with at least a couple of Final Four appearances, IMO.

Everything has been downhill since that happened aside from a few great regular seasons with Crean. When Sampson came there was still something to build on. We had the recent 2002 run so their was still some feeling of fresh tournament success. Plus the glory Knight years weren’t quite the completely ancient history that they are today. But now we’ve ripped off 13 years of mostly mediocre to downright bad results and we’re left with a very weak program.
Try not to think about it too much is my best advice. It's extremely frustrating. IU got bludgeoned by the NCAA while Kansas, UNC and others have been able to skate on worse offenses in the past 10 years.
