I think it's known he allegedly has a permanent limp.

Matta makes some sense (Not too old, Indiana ties, Big Ten experience, good showing in the Big Ten (and Butler before that)), but I have to think if the list is getting down to Matta and Woodson, it's not a list of first tier names.
    It's not true at all.

Closer than the national media thought, but not as close as the high level IU boosters thought it was if that makes sense. Stevens seriously considered the IU opportunity and I do think it is still in some ways his dream job, but ultimately don't think he was ever going to bring himself to leave Boston especially mid season.

Hindsight is 20-20, but I'm onboard with you guys thinking IU had a great coach and he might've blown it a bit... but IU blew it out of proportion and are the ones that really messed up on how they handled that.
Oh yeah, the past 13 have shown that if we decided to engage in a coverup at the time, there’s no way we’d be any worse off all these years later lol. I say that half tongue-in-cheek/half serious....but really it’s true

Back then IU still thought “we are IU and can find someone else to win”.

Well Crean was a big downgrade from Sampson, then Archie was even a downgrade from Crean. So it’s not that easy.....

I think Stevens is the only true “A list name” we had any sort of chance at.

Matta would be a hell of a grab though. Two Final Fours, a final game, a lot of Big 10 success, snagged Oden/Conley

According to sources, Indiana and Thad Matta had agreed to a deal for Matta to become the next men's basketball coach at Indiana but after failing his physical, the deal has fallen through.
    Fuel to the inferno.

Woodson supported by Dane Fife or Michael Lewis as a lead assistant makes a lot of sense IMO. I 100% think anyone who can say I coached at the highest level has sway with HS kids. He also wasn't like the worst coach ever or anything. He's one of the few guys who turned a franchise around like the Hawks and also helped to give the Knicks their best season in years and both spots he did it with innovative offense.

Dunno if he's the fit or not, but I don't think his resume is anything to scoff at. He's more accomplished than Juwan Howard and yes Howard is younger, but Woodson isn't a bad fit.

Almost anything you're going to do here is a gamble unless you really, really love Chris Beard, but I think generally speaking there's nothing to be afraid of from most of these scenarios. Archie pretty much took us to rock bottom

Woodson's time, in my thinking, might've been to follow Sampson. All the clean program stuff, and an Indiana guy who played "the right way" under Knight and "would run a clean program" might've been an easier sell (and mattered to people a lot more) at the time, plus his NBA coaching resume. Not as full then obviously... but still there.

I'm just not sure now is the time to take that gamble.

I'm just not ready to be wondering about what the next coach is going to do. How is recruiting is going to be. How the players will buy in. What system can we expect and how well can he adapt to his players.
I'm ready for a coach that we can just check and see what he did at his last major college gig.

I'm not saying it won't be Woodson... But his age and lack of college resume' cannot help him. The NBA probably does help, but it's not like he's a multi-time NBA trophy winning coach.
I'm not even sure how many boxes "Mike Woodson" would tick with HS and college kids these days.

Yeah, the old "Bring back Coack Knight!" camp would be thrilled... I'm not sure thrilling them matters. It's 2021. What matters is a style of ball that wins in the B10 and the tournament, and that is sustainable.

And I lump him in with Archie Miller as someone that you 'think' could do the job, but until the balls hit the court, nobody knows for sure. And Archie was such a failure, that has to give anyone pause to sign a coach that doesn't already have an established college track record.

I'm a hard pass on Woodson for those reasons.

I don't want to hope the next coach can get it done in a major conference.

Michigan wasn't snakebit like IU and Miller though.

"That's what Glass said about Archie"

    "NEXT!"
