Re: Are any of you in any Greek organizations?
I have no real problem with Greek life. Hell, I was in a fraternity. It was kind of like being best friends with someone and then dating them, it sort of screwed up my relationship with a lot of the guys who wanted me to join in the first place. I never really "got it" and after I rushed was only active for one semester.
You can maintain good friendships, work in the community, drink, chase tail (the four points of being in a fraternity, the second one, maybe that is giving them too much credit but some fraternities actually do good things) without doing it in the context of a middleman like a fraternity that is charging you out the *** for membership fees.

Re: Are any of you in any Greek organizations?
I as in a fraternity during my time at IU. I had a great time and met some life long friends. Definitely made the social life a piece of cake in a campus that big.
When looking back on it, I did some really silly things to get through rush and into the fraternity. You don't really think about it then b/c you're young, and other pledges are doing it as well. It felt like a group accomplishment when rush and "hell week" were completed, but even after that it still takes a semester to a year before you can truly enjoy the experience, due to the fact that you're still the youngest in the house until the next class comes through.
The parties were great, the girls were great, and the brotherhood was great... BUT fraternity life isn't for everybody.
It takes a lot of self control and having your priorities intact. You can't forget the reason you went to college ( at least what most people go for)
There is ALWAYS something going on. It may be room parties that a handful of guys in the fraternity are having, it may be the fraternity having a house party, it may be an off campus house party that other members of the fraternity are going to, it may be a social gathering elsewhere with a sorority, or it may just be a couple guys going out... either way there's distractions. Then the main part of the distraction is of course the upset sex. Whether it be sorority girls, curious freshman, or just your fraternity groupies, the girls are there for the chasing!
So you have to remember to enjoy yourself, b/c it is a blast, but stay grounded b/c those are 4 (sometimes 5-8) of the best years of your life... as well as most importantLeave a comment:

Re: Are any of you in any Greek organizations?
I am not a part of a fraternity, but have a lot of friends who are. And here at PSU the frats are changing a lot. Back at the beginning of the semester there was a freshman who was going to rush Fiji (the oldest fraternity on PSU's campus) and he left one of their parties and then ended up falling about 15 feet and landed on his head and died. His BAC was .16 so nothing extremely high. Anyways, Fiji is getting into some trouble, but i dont think they will be disbanded, they have too much power.
But because of what happened rules are being changed and will be enforced. Frats can can only hold socials on days but Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If they have a party, they need to hire bouncers from an outside company that will be checking ID's and writing everyone's name down.
It doesn't really affect me though as I have been to one frat party this entire year. Usually they are way to crowded and full of ********. I have nothing against fraternity life and I think that a few frats here have given the majority of them a bad name. Most frats have an average GPA around the 3.2 area. I hope these new rules make them remember what the idea behind fraternities are.Leave a comment:

Which frat was it? You can pm me if you don't want to bad mouth it in public. I have some friends in a Frat at IU that just started up again after being booted and I want to know if it's the same one.Leave a comment:

Re: Are any of you in any Greek organizations?
I can still remember seeing about a dozen guys with ropes around their necks and the other end of the ropes lashed to the back of a pickup truck, running for their lives up McKinley Avenue during Rush Week at Ball State in 1978.
I ran right after them and said, "Hey, that looks like fun. Can I join?" but they wouldn't let me.
I've never gotten over the disappointment.Leave a comment:

Re: Are any of you in any Greek organizations?
Good, old I. U. fraternities, huh?!!
100 years ago when I was at I.U. I had a bunch of buddies who pledged frats. My "closest" buddies pledged, Phi Delta Theta, if I remember right. You would think I would remember exactly. Why?
I was invited to quite a few frat parties and had fun at them, but the monied, priviledged vibe was pretty strong at the few frats I frequented. It was free beer, my companions tended to be female, so I didn't think a whole lot about it...until....
My Phi Delt friends suggested I rush their house. They were so persistant that I began to consider it, even though I didn't know where I would come up with the money. Before I could give it a strong consideration, though, I was informed through the grapevine that the national chapter had been told about a black guy possibly rushing their house and let them know that it would be frowned upon and there may be subtle reprecussions if I made it in.
Needless to say, I quit going to frat parties and didn't rush.
Ahh...good times.
To show you how a generation can change, I went with my nephew to Dad's day at his frat at Purdue recently. He has no male figures in his life, so I was his proxy "Dad." I've known him since he was 6 months old.
So how did the day go? Excellent!! I was warmly and genuinely welcomed and had a great time. (Although the lack of cleanliness and general clutter of the house brought back memories, lol.)
So, I guess I can attest a bit to L.A.'s I.U. frat vibe.Leave a comment:

Re: Are any of you in any Greek organizations?
Yeah they typically are. Usually, it's not even the school that kicks them off campus--it's their nationals. Boot them off temporarily, regardless of what they do, and they are back within a decade.Leave a comment:

I might wait out the economy for a year - which it sounds like you're doing anyway.
I got a job through ****dumb luck. Most people here haven't been as lucky.
Make sure to beat up the younger pledges. They like it.Leave a comment:

Congratulations.
I just took the LSAT on Saturday. I am hoping to go work in film here in Florida or CA, but I may try the law school thing. Just not sure yet.Leave a comment:

I just looked it up and the house in my second story is back at IU. I guess the organization was allowed to start over after a few years.Leave a comment:
