Basically, they are preparing to handle a lot more patients with Coronavirus.
Cancelling the surgeries are also for the patients. Most surgeries put your body out of wack for a bit, and this could result in a compromised immune system. Now isn't a good time to have a compromised immune system.

Also, seems the current belief is this virus started back in November around the time I was in China. Luckily I didn't visit Wuhan, although I did have a minor cold shortly after returning.

Illinois and Ohio are closing all restaurants/bars tomorrow.

My guess is that by the end of the week, this will be the case in every stare.

Completely, or are they still allowing drive thru and delivery? It would be utterly stupid to close them completely. Better to keep drive thru and delivery an option, and just require employees to wear masks.

There is always some level of risk. Consider that people will need food or they die. That has to be delivered to them or they need to pick it up. Most people in 2020 are not capable of foraging for their own food. We don't have that star trek food generator invented yet either. So, the best way to get food may well be the drive through where cleanliness of the exchange can be managed. It also keeps the economy going.

Finally, I'm willing to die if I cannot have Culver's...especially their Turtle Sundaes.

Sounds like drive thru and curbside service can continue based on what I read.

A very spot-on article about the virus:

Drove by Culver's today. It was packed. I translate that as more potential patients flooding the ICU. It's very bad and I really hope the state shuts it down.

Disclosure: I did go through Culver's drive through for a Turtle Sundae this evening. I have no guilt about it. You gotta eat.

Finally went to the grocery store today. I'm only in my early 30s but I've never seen anything like this. Still fortunate enough to live somewhere where it wasn't a madhouse to check out, and there was enough in stock (just not a selection of it) to sustain my standard grocery shop.

But a few things I saw, just kinda remarking (sure you've all seen similar):
                    • Some old guy exiting with a cart full of 5 stacked cartons (whatever you call it when you take all of the cans in the cardboard box) of black beans. WTF, geezer? Why do you need that many black beans?
                    • Zero coffee creamer. Any kind. Any brand. Anywhere.
                    • But a lot of milk?
                    • No hand sanitizer. Duh.
                    • Most common item in carts: Mountain Dew. I mean, I live in rural Indiana lol.
                    • Tons of pasta items, thankfully.
                    • No ground beef or chicken. But a zillion cuts of steak.
                    • Almost no canned veggies. Kinda hard to make a stew right now
                    • A bunch of idiots wearing masks not to prevent themselves from spreading sickness from sneezing etc. but as if the masks would protect them in any way.

They might be doing it for the wrong reason, but at least they are doing it. The more people wearing masks the fewer people spreading diseases unknowingly.

True. A better point than I am about to post.

I have heard it many times that wearing masks don't protect you. I've also read some thoughtful views that it provides a small measure of safety. I believe the minority view is correct.

If you have a mask on your face you are less likely to have your fingers or anything traveling in the air enter your mouth and nose. If someone coughs on you, it will land on the mask rather than in your mouth or breathed in through the nose.

But I understand why it's discouraged. For one it is only a small amount of protection. It's more important to wash your hands and the other steps because we all ultimately touch things including the mask and touch our faces. But still, I actually believe it's discouraged so we don't run out of them. Healthcare workers need them.

The following site has the mortality rate at 1.8%. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

It is still 18 times more dangerous than the flu but the percentage continues to drop as more people are being tested. Let's hope it keeps dropping. Still, considering the fact the flu is actually very serious as well, 18 times worse is horrible. Still it's mortality rate is about half of what people said it was just days ago.

yes, but the hospitals have not gotten overwhelmed yet. if/when that happens, all bets are off--the mortality rate could skyrocket.

Yes which is why nobody should be going to a restaurant or anything elective. Stay home. Facetime if you have to interact.
