Bob Sanders' body betrays him again

You have to think Bob Sanders' NFL career is over.

After playing just nine games total in the past three years for the Indianapolis Colts, Sanders' season with the San Diego Chargers ended after two games. Sanders, who missed Sunday’s game against Kansas City, was put on the injured reserve Wednesday because of a knee injury. That means four straight seasons have ended on the injured reserve for the hard-hitting, playmaking safety. He has played just 11 games since the 2007 season when he was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

San Diego general manger A.J. Smith made it clear in a statement that the Sanders’ experiment is over in San Diego.

“All we wished for Bob was good health and hoped to turn him loose to do his thing, which was being one great, physical, highly-competitive player,” Smith said. “It didn’t work out for him or us, and we wish him the very best. He was with us a very short time, but made a positive impact with our team in many ways, and I’ll always appreciate that.”

The Chargers knew they were taking a chance on Sanders and the deal was very team friendly. But they liked Sanders and they wanted him to be a big part of the defense. They expected him and fellow safety Eric Weddle to create a special tandem.

When I spoke to Smith about Sanders, Smith said all Sanders needed was “health.” He didn’t get it. I met Sanders during the summer and he is easy to root for. He said he was due for some good health and he was thrilled to get the chance in San Diego. When healthy this summer, Sanders was fast and he looked good.

But, in the end, his body betrayed him again.

The Chargers, who are getting used to injuries, will use Steve Gregory with Weddle along with some other young players. Gregory is serviceable, but a healthy Sanders could have been special.

Meanwhile, the Chargers brought in another veteran defender. Defensive tackle Tommie Harris replaces Sanders on the roster.

Harris was cut both by Chicago and Indianapolis this year. The Chargers want a veteran to fill the gap in the rotation for the next few weeks. Luis Castillo will be out for several weeks with a broken leg and Jacques Cesaire will be out for several weeks with a knee injury. Rookie defensive wend Corey Liuget missed last week’s game with an ankle injury. He was practicing some Wednesday. Still, it is not known if he can play against the Dolphins. The Chargers will take anything Harris can give him at this point.

    Surprise Surprise....

Sad for Sanders but this was so obviously coming that Nostradamus didn't bother predicting it....
Nuntius was right for a while. I was wrong for a while. But ultimately I was right and Frank Vogel has been let go.

It's a shame. Bob, before his body quit on him, was one a top ten defensive player imo. An Ed Reed level safety.

Thanks for the super bowl Bob.

I really don't think Bob was a roid person at all. Watched this guy at training camp every year and all he did was pump iron constantly and work on his legs. Small frame with delivering big hits got him. No roid pissed off at the world attitude at all and one of the nicest guys on the team with the folks behind the scenes.

I always enjoy reading your firsthand experiences from training camp. How many have you been to?

Is there a difference? Do steroids make you more prone to injury or does it matter how you build your body? Is there just a point you overdo it and make yourself more susceptible to injury?

Does Bob Sanders have himself to blame for the injuries with the bodybuilding (roids or not) and/or a reckless style of play.... or was he just unlucky not to be able to stay healthy enough to sustain a career in the NFL?

Twelve working camps. Someday when the MVP retires I'll be able to tell a few more stories.

I think you make a great point my friend and I believe you have hit on something. I just wanted to address the constant Roid Head rumors that get thrown out. Do I know for a fact Sanders ever took roids? No of course not, but he was such a mellow guy when I had the opportunity to see him and the personality did not match what you would expect with someone juiced up.

I suspect as you mention, his reckless style while impressive for the oohs and ahhs just destroyed his body. Sanders is a little big man.

When you're on steroids, they do the exact opposite. They help you recover faster than normal. They are actually less injury prone.

Until they get too big, or until they stop taking them.

I think all you need on this particular topic is hear Bob say that when he hits people, he tries to knock himself out. He's said if it hurts him, then he has to know it hurts the other guy. He's just not realized that the other guy merely gets a bruise, while Bob gets torn tissue.

"If you hit somebody hard enough, they will give up," Bob Sanders says. "You can feel their body go limp and they'll just surrender. So every time I hit somebody, the goal is to knock myself out. I know that if I hit somebody hard enough that I can feel it, it's hurting them 10 times worse."
When Indianapolis hosts the New England Patriots in a matchup of NFL unbeatens on Sunday, the Colts' Bob Sanders, a 5-foot-8 safety, will be the shortest player on the field. But as ESPN.com's Wayne Drehs writes, Sanders will play like the biggest.

Even though his time in Indy was short (when you consider the injuries) Bob Sanders will always be a Colt to me. I wish things would have worked out and he could stay healthy but it was time to let him go.
