With Indiana looking to be mostly cash strapped this off season, that doesn't change the fact that our Pacers still have holes that need to be filled. Obviously, Lance Stephenson is the major free agent that would seemingly be in our front office plans, but we will still need to add a couple of pieces no matter what happens with Stephenson. And if Stephenson would happen to get a front loaded offer of some sort that we simply cannot afford to match, then of course we will have a starter to replace as well.
Indiana is obviously not a destination city for any of this years marquee front line free agents. Partly due to geography, but mostly due to money available. So, Indiana must go outside the box and scour the world for potential players who can help them, and perhaps scrape the bargain bin in the process or possibly convince veteran players in pursuit of a ring to take massive pay cuts to join us. This is a list of potential good fits I think for our roster, style of play, and price range:
1. ORLANDO JOHNSON
Yes, we drafted Orlando and then cut him this year in a roster purge surrounding the additions of Lavoy Allen, Andrew Bynum, and Evan Turner. Johnson is young, cheap, knows our system, and more importantly is an extremely high character locker room presence......this will come in a later article, but I think while many Pacers fans were falsely assuming that losing Granger hurt our locker room, that it was by far a much more massive loss for our team chemistry to lose Orlando Johnson. Assuming Johnson would take the minimum deal, or just a smidge above that, I'd bring him back.
2. CHRIS SINGLETON
Singleton is a tall and defensive minded wing buried in the cess pool that is the player development system in Washington. Singleton was a first round pick that I liked coming out of Florida State as a potential major wing defensive weapon, but for whatever reason he hasn't panned out in D.C. I like him as a defensive option behind Paul George potentially, and I definitely think he is at least worth investigating on a non guaranteed or minimum contract.
3. KEITH LANGFORD
Langford is a 6'4 shooting guard who is one of the best players in Europe. He has a huge wingspan of 6'9, and he is a lefty, which is something I always tend to like as an evaluator. He played his college ball at Kansas years ago, but has been in Europe for quite a while, and in fact I think he was the leading scorer this year in the Euroleague. He is 30 years old, so he is in his prime and could be enticed to come over for a small commitment and chance to play for a top contender. Especially if Lance leaves, I think he could be a low cost short term option.
4. GLEN "BIG BABY" DAVIS
Yes, I know all about Davis and his attitude problems. And I am not crazy about suggesting this pick up, but if we find ourselves needing a back up 4 man for much cheaper than Luis Scola will be, then I think Davis is worth talking about. He is playoff tested and has been through the wars, and is a tough minded intense player who is unafraid to play in big games. He likely can be had for a small short term contract.
5. MARVIN WILLIAMS
We will need a back up wing no matter what we do with Lance Stephenson, because likely Turner will not return and Rasual Butler is on his last legs and not that good anyway. Williams never lived up to his draft pick at #2 all those years ago, but he is still a long 3 man who can shoot a little bit, and he can play at the 4 in certain lineups, giving Indiana potential backups at 2 different spots. I like Williams as an upside play because he gives you positional flexibility and because I think he has been poorly coached in his career in Atlanta and Utah.
6. SHAWN MARION
Again, Marion gives you a potential backup at a couple of different spots, gives you 3 point shooting, and gives you a still high level defender who has played in championship level games. He is not at all close to the athletic freak he used to be, but on a 1-2 year deal for cheap money, if he wants to play here and chase a ring I think he could help us and make sense.
7. MICHAEL BEASLEY
Yes, typing that makes me squeamish. But, he is still very young, and Beasley can at least score the ball. He has fresh young legs, much younger than the guys I mentioned right above him. Perhaps playing in our culture, with Bird, Walsh, and David West all around to mentor him and teach him how to be a pro.....and the knowledge that Indiana could be his last stop, might get his still large amount of potential out of him. This would be a low risk, upside play here for cheap money....preferably non guaranteed money.
8. MALCOLM DELANEY
Delaney at one time was the leading scorer in the ACC, but mainly due to a semi lack of position didn't stick in the league. So, he went to Europe and has excelled there recently, becoming one of Europe's best guards. This year playing for a German club and coach, the utilized primarily at the point guard position, where he was borderline too athletic for most of the Euroleague guards to handle. His team, Bayern Munich, I think won the title there if I am not mistaken. He has always been able to score off the dribble and run pick/roll, and as a cheap option as a bigger point guard or combination guy in the backcourt, he could make some sense. He is just 25 years old, so again this would be an upside play with a chance to pay off much bigger down the road. Houston has been interested in him for a while now, and in fact tried to sign him last year but who couldn't get out of his contract.....now I believe he is unrestricted. He will be on someone's summer team this year and likely in the league next year if he finds the right fit.....since we are a good spot for combo guards like him, we might just be it. Worth pursuing by our international scouting staff at least.
9. RICHARD JEFFERSON
Yet another candidate for a backup wing spot, he is getting up there but likely has a little left in the tank. Jefferson has good size and could be a nice short term backup for Paul George, and maybe could play along side Paul on occasion. Again, this is a veteran minimum type of move on a short term deal.
10. SHAUN LIVINGSTON
These last 2 potential players are more high profile and high dollar possibilities. Livingston obviously would be a good fit regardless, but likely wouldn't end up here unless Lance Stephenson moves on. Livingston would be an outstanding fit in Indiana with our current roster set up, as he could share ball handling duties as a starter alongside George Hill and play back up point guard as well. Livingston is still young, and while he will never be as dynamic as we potentially could have been before his horrific injury, he remains a high character guy with tremendous floor vision and ability to make plays.
If I were Indiana, I would look to sign Livingston no matter what Stephenson does, though he would need to be a mid level type of signing and he would take some other corresponding moves on our roster to make him affordable. (such as likely moving CJ Watson to a team with cap space, or possibly moving Mahimni and getting a cheaper back up center). Then with that, you'd want to get a young and super quick point guard defender, who maybe could be more of a scorer on offense as your 4th guard.....those guys are easy to come by and are normally fairly cheap.
11. PAU GASOL
Now listen, before everyone starts criticizing this, hear me out: This is our move I think if we choose to trade Roy Hibbert.....which I highly highly doubt we do. But if we did, I'd pursue Gasol to fill his spot and still try and make a run at the title this year. I think Gasol needs to play with a strong coach and for a chance at the title for players he respects to become his best, and I think Indiana would have all of that for him. I also think he'd take a pretty substantial pay cut to play for a winner. I am terrified that he ends up in Miami actually, but if we would happen to deal Hibbert somewhere, signing Gasol would mean we could be more flexible in what we took back in that trade.
I am not for trading Hibbert by the way, since I'd rather ride it out these next 2 years and then start planning to add a big star next to Paul George in the summer of 2016 while seeing if I can turn Hibbert around......but if they do move him, Gasol is the best short term solution out there that keeps our window open while giving us still some long term flexibility.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND AS YOU READ THIS
----These 11 free agents are all unrestricted free agents, so Indiana wouldn't have to worry about tying up money for Lance Stephenson or offer sheets or anything like that. There were some restricted free agents who may have made this list, except that Indiana has repeatedly proven that they will not go after anyone else's restricted free agent....a decision that I believe comes directly from ownership.
----Obviously, we could only sign one or two of these guys likely, as we would be probably using money from the mid level exception and splitting it up into a couple of different contracts.
----I intentionally didn't put this list into any real order of preference, though obviously I'd love to see Shaun Livingston be a Pacer, it likely wouldn't happen unless Stephenson leaves. If however Bird could add Livingston and keep Stephenson, then that obviously would be my preference like it would most everyone else I assume.....a 3 man backcourt rotation of Hill, Stephenson, and Livingston with a cheap 4th guard brought in for defensive purposes would be really strong in my opinion.
-----Upcoming articles planned in the off season series are about:
-Upgrading potentially the Pacers player development staff in a substantial way
-Potential new assistant coaching candidates I want to throw out there.
-Suggestions on radically changing how we play offense while keeping similar personnel
-A summer wrap up about where we have been, where we are, and where we are going.
-And of course, more draft player profiles are coming as well in the next week or so.
This time until next time......
