The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

  • Odd Thoughts: short thoughts about the Spurs massacring us

If you want to look at the bright side of this, if somehow we can get past the Bobcats in the first round (which honestly right now I have serious doubts) then at the least you will play either the Raptors or the Wizards in the second round. Granted right now we would get smoked by any of the three of them but that actually is more appealing than having to face the Bulls or the Nets in the second round assuming we could beat the Hawks.

See sun shiner’s I didn’t leave you out, right there at the top of the post I have given you a silver lining. Now you might want to stop reading because that is all you are going to get.

Look I have no idea. I mean the number one seed is now gone and the Heat (Chris Bosh) are actually making fun of us. We deserve it btw, but it still burns like a son of a gun to read them and know that they are correct.

Also for those of you not able to watch NBA tv be thankful, we are getting roasted by every talking head in the NBA for being to vocal about getting the number one seed and now choking it away.

If our team was suffering from to much positive press then that should no longer be a problem.

Here is an interesting tidbit for you, for the first time in the franchises history the team has failed to score 80 points three games in a row.

I’m just going to go ahead and say it now. The Evan Turner for Danny Granger trade was a disaster in the locker room and now officially it is a disaster on the court. Turner was benched in the second half after 7 min. of useless first half play. Don’t get me wrong the ship was headed south prior to the trade but this was like killing a dying hamster with a shotgun.

The worst thing that is going to happen to this team is that we are going to play again Wednesday. We need a week off but that’s not going to happen. The only thing that can be done now is just keep trying and then once we get to the point that the number one seed is out of the question then we should just shut down a couple of guys or way back down their min. so that they can get rested for the playoffs. In fact I would consider starting LaVoy Allen and using Copeland as early as this weekend.

West needs a break and Scola just needs to sit.

I believe we are cursed if you want the truth. No matter what we try or what we do the Indiana bench is just the death of our team. Literally the only player on our team from last year on our bench is Mahinmi and we are once again looking at the same results. Is it because Frank just can not adjust an offense so guys suffer on our bench or is it something else? I have no idea. I mean I would have paid Gerald Green’s plane ticket to get him off of the team last season and while I was always higher on Plumlee than some of you were (just from watching him in Ft Wayne) I thought that Scola was a steal. But as it stands now if I could have a do over button I’d probably hit it just to keep Plumlee (Green I’d still get rid of).

Luis was a huge part of the reason why we started off so well but to be honest if he isn’t hitting that elbow jumper he is pretty much useless. But our backup power forward is not the reason we can’t score 80 points a game that falls on our starters.

15 points in the first quarter that is what your starters, plus Turner, gave you. You’re going to beat no one scoring that let alone the Spurs. We actually only got up 69 shots compared to their 80. I mean you can’t even really complain about shot disparity tonight, the most shots anyone took was 13 and Hibbert, Stephenson & George are the ones who took them. So it’s not like you can point to any one player and say “stop shooting the ball so much”.

It’s just once again the same old story we see every game, we can not make shots open, defended or otherwise. David West once again missed several easily makeable shots early in the game and that has to be demoralizing for everyone because they were good shots gotten within the offense.

But I have no idea how to correct shot making. I saw them setting some screens out on the top of the key a little better than they had recently and in fact I saw George Hill set a masterful screen on Leonard that opened up Paul for a shot. If I remember right he missed the shot but got fouled, but it was due to the screen set by Hill.

I am just going to continue to say what I’ve said all along, we need the regular season to end. The damage is done, we are out of first and we will not be getting it back so the best thing we can do is just continue to work and try and improve and pray that the locker room is not so toxic that we can’t over come it.

I’ll give the sun shiners one more glimpse of hope, the playoffs are a whole new season and with any luck at all Watson (who I believe must have ripped his leg off for the amount of time he has been gone) will be back and if there is any form of a miracle at all maybe Bynum can play a game or two.

Other than that there really is nothing else good to say.

Again I’m just not interested enough to do grades.

    I'll do a grade.

    F.

    that's what you all deserve.

I don't have NBA TV and due to dumb league pass rules, I didn't see the game tonight and I didn't even mind. I remember seeing a tweet and being surprised that they were only down 9 at one point. That's where we are right now.

Right now I almost think the best thing that could happen is to tell the starters to go do something else for 4 days, and don't see or talk to each other in any way. Relax, rest, and come back refreshed.

Even the Pacers announcers sound awkward trying to find positive spins about this team. I wish they would just come out and say what they are really feeling.

This seriously was earlier this season...
"It's just unfortunate that we've been penalized so much this year and nothing has happened to the Pistons, the Palace or the city of Detroit," he said. "It's almost like it's always our fault. The league knows it. They should be ashamed of themselves to let the security be as lax as it is around here."

The #2 seed definitely has an easier path to the ECF than the #1 seed. Going through the Bobcats and the Wiz/Raps is obviously preferable to seeing either the Nets or the Bulls. The Nets are much improved and a definite threat, and the Bulls are the Smashmouth team we once prided ourselves on and will run through brick walls for each other. I hate them, but dammit I have to admit to respecting the heck out of them.

At this point I think our best case scenario is this: (This is assuming we get our crap together, btw)

We face the Bobcats in the first round, a scrappy team, but one that a focused and competent Pacers team can handle quite easily.

The Heat face the Hawks and likely win in 5.

We then face either the Wiz or Raps. Personally I would rather face the Wizards, I think the Raptors are a bit more dangerous overall. But again, a focused Pacers should win against either.

The Heat face (hopefully) the Bulls, and it's a bloody freaking duel to the death. Joakim Noah gets sent to prison for manslaughter. Carlos Boozer is interred in a prison for the criminally insane. Thibs gets life in prison for criminal conspiracy to commit murder. And the Heat emerge, bloodied, bruised and beaten to a pulp after 7 games and a dozen overtimes.

At that point, that's the best chance we're going to have to beat the Heat in a series where we do not hold home court. We have to jump on them and steal an early game in the series and then our games in Indy are 100%, no doubt about it, MUST WINS.

The way things are looking, the above scenario seems pretty likely (matchups, that is) - We're all obviously incredibly disappointed with how the team is playing and how things are developing on and off the court with the Pacers. BUT, with all that being said, ******IF******* we manage to pull our heads out of our posterior in the next few weeks and get to the position where we are looking at the once inevitable 3rd matchup Vs. the Heat in the playoffs... Then who knows?

This team is making it REALLLLLLLLLLLY hard for perennial sunshiner's like myself to keep the faith. But hey, faith is something I've got in spades, so why not keep rationing an extra portion for the Pacers?

I still believe in these guys. We can get out of this malaise. It ain't gonna be pretty and it ain't gonna be easy and the guys are going to have to all really look deep inside themselves to find the maturity and guts to turn it around.

But they can, and I think they will.

Re: Odd Thoughts: short thoughts about the Spurs massacring us

After a couple martinis and a lot of thought about this, here is my conclusion:

This all falls back on the shoulders of Larry Bird (I'm sorry to say) for being overly
competetive and cold-blooded for the rest of the world to understand.

Early in the season when the Pacers were tearing up the entire league, they
believed in themselves and were oozing with confidence. It took freakishly good
shooting from their opponents for them to be defeated. They played defense
extremely well, and had enough offense to win most games handily. They had
an identity, and knew what it meant to play Pacers style basketball. They all
bought into the system, and were all on the same page. They were a team
all in it together, fighting for each other, they had each other's backs.
Except for a few losses (usually on the end of road back-to-backs), there
was no reason to think they couldn't continue to build upon a great foundation,
get even better, and roll through the season ready to take on the world come
playoff time. They had great chemistry as a team.

What I am afraid happened though was that when Larry pulled the trigger on
bringing in Bynum, then the Granger trade for Turner and Allen, and cutting
OJ all in the name of "improving" the team, he inadvertantly undermined
team chemistry and the rest of the players took it as "hey you're not good
enough to get the job done, we need to somehow make you better".

Granted Danny and OJ played relatively minor roles on the court during
games, but they were still part of the team and were great teammates
everyone loved and wanted to see do well. Danny was a long-time
veteran and mentor of sorts to some of the younger guys, while OJ was
one of those guys that overcame lots of adversity to get where he was.
We all rooted for their success even if they didn't show stellar play in
what few minutes they were alloted. I have little doubt they were still
loved and appreciated by their teammates.

What happened though was Larry pulled Danny and OJ's championship
aspirations out from under them in cold-blooded fashion because he felt
the team was not good enough as it stood, and I think this ended up
rattling the team's confidence. He brings in a guy whose knees are way
worse than Danny's, and two other young guys who are probably in
more in need of veteran leadership than the rest of our young guys.

I think it is more than just a coincidence that this sharp downwards fall
happens to coincide with these personel moves.

How do we fix it? I'm not sure that we can at this point because the
damage has been done, but was thinking that maybe letting one of the
newcomers go (no names mentioned) and bringing back OJ might be
                  a slight moral booster.

I'm probably way off base (as usual) so no offense taken if anyone
                  flames away.

I think you're right on target, RamBo_Lamar... I've been saying that same basic thing for a while now.

It sucks, but there is really no "cure" for it. There is no "Ctrl-Z" for the trade. Or for rolling the dice on Bynum.

Larry made the bed and we're sleeping in it. Hopefully this thing turns around quickly and we all look back at this as a bizarre phase during a championship run.

Even I wouldn't do the Granger for Turner trade if there was a reset button. Turner has been useless on the court, and we at least wouldn't have these locker room questions.

Can David West not dunk anymore? There was a play early on where he had a clear path to the rim and looked as though he was going to dunk it, but instead air balled a floater. It was sad.

Scola might be the most useless player in the league when he isn't hitting shots.

Parker just massacred us. Gotta respect how he has been elite for so long.

The Spurs could find little orphans in the streets of Venice and turn them into dead eye shooters.

Let's call this what it is - an epic team wide choke job. They came into the season beating their chests about how they wanted Game 7 in Indy. They were awesome early season front runners, and I think that they felt that their work was done in December. When the pressure got tight at the end of the season and it was time to put the chokehold on the one seed, they crumbled. Couldn't handle the pressure or expectations. Even if we clean this mess up, there's no way we beat the Heat now, and no one knows this more than our players.

Isn't it amazing to realize that he was in the same draft as Tinsley ??

3 things I mentioned from yesterdays Peck post as way to help.

1.) Offensive rebounds, SA 15, IND 7 (same number of missed shots 43)
2.) Fast break points, SA 9, IND 0
3.) Smash Mouth - Pts in the Paint SA 42, IND 28; And as a bonus - hard fouls, 0

                          Horrible failure.

And taken with the next pick after Tinsley.

Is there any precedence for a team that made the NBA finals having such a bad, prolonged run right at the end of the season? I really would like to see it if there was.
