Re: Not only are the Cavs getting beat up so are their fans

I've got a fan mascot story. My friend and I went to the home opener a few years ago vs Philly and got there sort of early to watch warmups. My friend is a diehard Philly fan so he was wearing a 76ers jersey. We were watching warmups behind the basket about ten rows up when all of a sudden Boomer started walking towards us a row behind. Towels were on each seat since it was opening night. Boomer picked up one of those towels and whipped my friend from behind which came around and smacked him in the face. It made a loud snap and I could tell it hurt, he stood up and goes "WTF man?!?" Boomer sort of just walked off like nothing happened...not cool Boomer.

Security would have taken him up and out if it was real, I think. I also highly doubt the mascot would get rough like that if this was real. If so, he'd be fired.

As a Jazz fan who also likes the Pacers and who posts here because this is the best basketball-related message board on the internet, I have to say I'm disappointed in you guys calling Jazz fans classless and saying we have no souls.

Generally, I only ever hear that from Houston fans -- who have a special venom reserved for the Jazz and its fans.

Most of the other fan-bases understand and respect the raucous and fun atmosphere in Salt Lake City. They know there is a small subset of bad apples in every arena who heckle the opposing teams, because they experience it when they go to their own home games, and they don't use a few examples of jerks to tarnish an entire fan-base.

The entire arena heckled Derek Fisher. You guys will never be able to run from that.

Re: Not only are the Cavs getting beat up so are their fans

First, heckling and booing are two different things. A considerable portion of the arena booed Derek Fisher -- yet there were cheers as well. Secondly, to say that those who booed him did so because he left the Jazz because his daughter had cancer is absurd.

They booed him because he claimed to be leaving the Jazz over his daughter's eye condition so he could be closer to her doctors in New York. Under this pretense, the Jazz let him out of his contract, and he immediately signed with Utah's most-hated foe, Los Angeles, which was even farther away from his daughter's doctors than Utah is. Additionally, one of the best cancer centers in the country is located in Utah. And even more additionally, it is totally and sincerely normal for fans to boo the opposing team. This is usually done with a certain sense of fun. Sports-hate is not the same thing as real life-hate.

I'm not saying that those who booed were right to boo; I hoped they wouldn't, but when they did it didn't bother me that much. I wasn't at that game, but we always boo the Lakers. I'm merely explaining that there was more behind the Derek Fisher thing, from the perspective of a Jazz fan, than simply: "they booed him because he left because his daughter had cancer.")

I mean, come on. Nobody would find cause to boo over something like that.

You know I feel bad for Derek Fisher and what he's had to deal with his daughter, but I just dont like the man. He is a dirty player and whines to the refs all the time. Watching him on the court disgusts me at times.

Yea to be honest I always had a problem with the way Fisher did that. His daughter was in N.Y. and so was the eye specialist.

So he then up and signs with the Lakers?

Sorry that doesn't add up, if I was a Jazz fan I would boo as well.

There are so many things wrong with this though that I don't even know where to begin.

I'll start with the fact that they should never ever use legitimate security as a prop or a gag. That undermines their authority and also at what point in time do people get confused over when security is real or is a joke.

This is why most major police departments do not allow their officers to participate in professional wrestling skits either.

Second, it is an act of violence and the NBA goes out of their way to make certain that this does not occur either on the floor or in the stands. So why in the name of God is an NBA team doing a skit about violence in the stands? Not to mention all of the things that can go wrong here.

Yes I get that it is a skit and yes to some people it is funny, but then again gallows humor is funny to some people as well but I don't think we would want comedians doing this at funerals.

He claimed to be leaving to get closer to better doctors. He didn't specify a city that I remember.

Fisher said he wants to live in one of the six or seven cities being considered for Tatum's care.
He declined to identify the cities under consideration. Many NBA players work apart from their families, but it's not an option for him. He and Candace have four children.
Utah Jazz guard Derek Fisher was released from his contract Monday to care for his 10-month-old daughter, who has cancer.

Yeah, that's how I thought it went down.

Therefore I stick by my story!

You stick by your story that the entire arena heckled Derek Fisher because he left because his daughter had cancer? I think a reasonable person would agree that, a) the entire arena didn't heckle Derek Fisher; if you meant booed, b) the entire arena didn't boo Derek Fisher; c) the reason he was booed is because he went to a conference rival in a way that many felt was questionable.

Do you not think the arena would have given him a standing ovation if he had gone to New York?

You have your mind made up. I'm just trying to explain that from the perspective of Utah Jazz fans, it's not as simple as you've laid it out. Many players have left the Jazz, and they get cheered when they go back to Salt Lake City. Wesley Matthews being the most recent example. Unless you think Jazz fans have some special hatred of cancer victims, you have to at least acknowledge that, wrong or right, the fans were displeased with Derek Fisher reasons that they considered to be legitimate.

I like how a Cavs/Jazz thread became debate on why Derek Fisher left Utah
