My Analysis of What the Pacers are Trying to do

Indy has been trying to free up cap space to hit next year's free agency market. Im sure they'll be interested in Boozer if they can scrap up enough money after signing Granger. Pacers have a lot of expirers at the end of his season: Daniels ($6,864,200), Bason ($2,272,860), Diener ($1,620,000), Foster ($5,500,000 - who will probably be re-signed), Graham ($826,269), and Nesterovic ($8,400,000) and McRoberts ($711,517)...Jack, Granger and Williams (if he behaves and matures) will most likely be resigned.

Basically $26,194,846 will come off the books next year, but Granger and Jack will be the main player that need to be signed. Right now the Pacers are $10 mill over the cap. So they'll have about $16 mill to re-sign players or add to their roster. The cap right now is at about $59 million, ive heard rumors that next season it will be at $65 (I dont know where I read this, but I remember it). If Granger is signed at about $11 million a season and Jack at $4 million a season thats $15 mill gone right away about about $1 million to work with, with the current salary cap. If the cap moves about $6 Million up, then the Pacers will have $7 million to work with. If the Pacers can sign Boozer for $12 million a season that means they'll only be over the cap by $5 million with this roster:

Ford/Jack
Dunleavy/Rush
Granger/Williams
Boozer/Foster
Murphy/Hibbert

from what Ive heard, Deron has been trying to talk to Boozer in re-signing with the Jazz but Boozer is interested in moving along. Boozer does have interest in playing in Miami, but unless Beasley can play SF, I dont see Miami signing him. They dont need 2 quality PF's with one coming off the bench, that would be a waste of talent. I think the Heat are more interested in signing a C like his counterpart Okur.

ya i agree. But being only $5mill over the cap with a young core of Ford, Rush, Granger, and Boozer would most likely mean more wins which would eventually mean more ticket sales and a strong chance of the post season which would lead to more revenue

If we retained the rights to Granger, Jack, and Foster, then the cap holds would prevent us for being able to sign Boozer.

even when if we decide to sign Boozer along with everyone you mentioned, we'll be in the same position, where we are about $10 - $12 million over the cap but with a much better team

The Pacers can't sign Boozer and retain the rights to Granger, Jack, and Foster.

What you're saying the Pacers are doing cannot be done under the salary cap rules.

We can't go over the cap to sign Boozer, and we won't have enough space to sign Boozer unless we renounce the rights to two of the three guys mentioned above. If we renounce their rights, then we couldn't go over the cap to sign them, unless they signed for the Minimum contract, which they won't.

MillerTime, just go to the "should we risk it or not" thread for count55's rather lengthy but HIGHLY informative explanation of our FA situation next season.

Besides....Boozer is going to OPT out next season and take the highest bid for his services where he will be looking to get paid more then the $12 mil per year salary that he will be getting next season. In the 2009-2010 Offseason, the vast majority of our extra $$$ that we can spend on any FA is going to go to Granger, Jack and IMHO either Foster or Rasho.

On top of that...unless Murphy is traded...which is VERY UNLIKELY.....we're not going to have the minutes nor the spot to play a Top Tier PF that is paid EVEN MORE then Murphy is now.

On a related note......given the Jazz 2009-2010 Salary Cap situation....I'm gonna guess that by the start of that season, either Boozer or AK47 will not be in a Jazz Uniform.

Boozer will no doubt be South Beach bound. Other than that, I think he stays put in Utah.

not just foster, we'll have to basically renounce every free agent except granger (that means foster, jack, rasho, quis). and then we'll have to clear some additional cap by dumping diener and williams on another team (a la philly with carney and booth), perhaps giving up a future pick in the process. then and only then will we have enough money to tempt boozer.

and even then boozer is still likelier to stay with utah or go to miami. riley wants boozer, no question. riles would just trade beasley for other assets if he's getting boozer.

it's a mad gamble that requires us to sacrifice half our depth for a maybe. if we miss on boozer who else is a reasonable target? this kind of gamble some times pays off (e.g. philly with brand) but more times than not the team with cap space ends up holding an empty bag.

we're talking about indiana sports fans here. selling tickets is NEVER a guarantee.

After clearing the roster for Boozer who says he will sign with the Pacers only to have him change his mind, not that he's ever done that before!

No big free agent has ever, nor will ever, be signing in Indiana. It wouldn't matter if we were actually 15m under the cap after resigning all those guys, it just isn't going to happen.
