^^To this day, I still don’t understand why Embiid was supposed to play for France. What is his connection to the country? Say what you will about him playing for the US, but at least he’s been here almost half his life. As far as I can tell, he’s as French as I am. I know international sport is increasingly a farce in this way, but that is just laughable.

You know it doesn't have to be about the country. The modern Olympics made it about that early on when they created it but nothing is binding to it. For instance it use to be about amature athletes competing not pro athletes.

They could also change the team sizes etc. Then you also have dual citizenship which isn't allowed for every country. It doesn't bother me at all that an athlete wants to compete and if the country of origin doesn't want them that they could switch.

Assuming this thread isn't limited to just basketball, looks like Chase Budinger is making an impact for USA's men's beach volleyball.

Chase Budinger spent seven years with the NBA before retiring to focus on beach volleyball. He and his partner Miles Evans easily defeated their French opponents in their Olympic debut on Monday.

It’s no exaggeration to say that simply qualifying would have been a way way bigger deal to the people in Cameroon than winning a gold will be to Americans.
That would require multiple years of commitment, and Embiid has had notorious struggles staying healthy. South Sudan qualified for the Olympics in the World Cup last year (and qualified for the World Cup in February of 2023). Similar to how the Americans qualify for events by bringing along a team with guys like Langston Galloway (guys not actively in the NBA).

He actually has close family based in France thus the connection. Anyway he backtracked on his initial commitment so it's water under the bridge. I remember people around here were not too thrilled about adding him to the roster out of the blue, due to Gobert's long tenure and loyalty to the national team as well as the emergence of Wembanyama.

Was at the games yesterday and it was super fun, although there's no way France should have won this game

Glad TY looked like he deserved to play. Steph on the other hand looked like he deserved to sit.
You know how hippos are made out to be sweet and silly, like big cows, but are actually extremely dangerous and can kill you with stunning brutality? The Pacers are the NBA's hippos....Matt Moore CBS Sports....

This is what I mean when people try to sound smart, act like they know some secret to the rules or something. Franz clearly takes 3 steps here

Not gonna lie, by the end I wanted Serbia to hold on for the win. International basketball is only truly interesting when the United States loses.

Gotta hand it to Serbia, those guys are pretty darned good. Kinda funny how all their names end with a "C" pronounced like "itch".
