The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

Which then opens things up to the Kyrie and Myles of the world who just cant help themselves and inevitably say some of the most stupid ****....but u cant have it both ways, as everyone is finding out...u cant want to be heard, but then pretend it never happened when u say stupid ****...
Comparing what Myles said to what Kyrie said is honestly ****ed up. Myles didn't give a platform to hateful propaganda like Kyrie did. I know that you didn't like what Myles said in that podcast but, please, do not compare it to Kyrie. You're doing everyone a disservice.

I'd be glad to discuss the Myles podcast with you if that's what you want to do but it has to be a good faith discussion. And it cannot be a good faith discussion as long as that comparison looms over it.

Troll other teams' boards? Do you honestly think that this is what happens on neutral NBA forums? If that's what you think then you're mistaken.

The good thing with neutral NBA boards is that you get the perspective of fans of other teams. You listen to what they have to say about your team and what they have to say about their teams. And then you get to see all the similarities and parallels that exist in these arguments. You'll see that there is a percentage of fans who, regardless of the team they support, will always think that the refs have it out for their team, will always think that their team's coach sucks and that their rotations are what lost them said game, will always think that their FO sucks at drafting, will always harp on one or two specific players on the team and will try to blame all of their team's failures on those few players and the list goes on.

Because that's how human beings work. When you become invested in something, you inevitably develop biases. You focus so hard on something that you lose the forest for the trees. But fans of other teams who aren't focusing solely on your team and aren't invested in it won't do that. They won't lose the forest for the trees and they usually have not developed any biases towards it. They will look at the big picture and they will try to generally be objective. And that's why their perspective is invaluable. Because their perspective will make you cognizant of the biases that you have developed and the first step at combatting our own biases is to be cognizant of them. Their perspective will help you re-calibrate and try to work towards adopting a more objective viewpoint.

PD used to have a number of regulars that weren't Pacer fans. They provided a lot of worth to the site and they were one of the reasons why this forum used to be more objective and level-headed than other team forums. Sadly, they rarely post anymore and that development hasn't been good for the forum, imo.

Wait a second. You still consider this a bad deal even after everything that Haliburton has done? This deal got us a potential superstar for an All-Star. How can you still view it as a bad deal?

Its all garbage...primarily from the standpoint of it all being selfish, self-serving, self-indulgent, insensitive BS...are there varying degrees based on the audience's background? certainly...were the jews more impacted by Kyrie's comments? yes...was there a huge number of African Americans that actually supported Kyrie and felt he had done nothing wrong? Yes there were...feel free to visit Twitter if you dont agree...thats the whole point-depending on one's background, one may or may not be as offended as another depending on how close it hits to home...and many like to be judgemental when they arent really invested, yet ridicule others for doing the very same when they do. Im not Jewish, so I wont pretend to fully understand the gravity and depth of the hurt-to do so would be insensitive and shallow on my part, IMO. I am, however, a lifelong Pacer fan...and its been very very clear to me throughout the 8 years or so that Myles has been here that he cares far less about this franchise than I do and most that have worn the uniform before him...and theyve paid him around 80 million dollars whereas I have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars supporting the franchise...so yea, i have taken great offense at a number of things Myles has said-especially when its clear that he cares only about himself...that he doesnt love the game of basketball-let alone the Pacers...that he is a me-first individual versus a team-first individual...and he has repeatedly done things from that standpoint regardless of the negative impact it had on the team-because his priority is himself and not his teammates, the franchise or the fans...

And just because you feel something is a disservice, doesnt make it so...you are entitled to your opinion, as am i, as is everyone...depending on how and what we all are invested as well as what our backgrounds are will shape those opinions...as you have shown here, some are far too quick to judge other opinions when they dont agree versus just sharing an opposing opinion...this isnt a forum designed for personal discussions and I have zero interest in having such with you as I typically dont find your opinions particularly compelling -but for the record this whole thread- which is pages and pages long- is exactly a discussion about what Myles said in the Podcast ...and everyone including yourself and yours truly have shared opinions on such...and its neither your right or mine to suggest what constitutes a good faith discussion and what does not.

Judge not, lest you be judged...

you seem to have this tendency to create issues where there arent really any...and then like to undermine this false pretense you yourself created...some call it strawman...all in some sort of apparent desire to be right...and at times almost has a 'holier than thou' vibe to it...I believe we all should stick to our own opinions and why we feel what we feel about them, no matter how strongly....interpreting and creating other peoples opinions so as to criticize or judge them is not only bizarre but screams to the very thing you mentioned earlier about proceeding in a manner that suggests good faith, IMO...

Finally, please dont preach to me about how PD used to be...Ive been around way longer than you have probably even been a Pacer fan...ive seen it take on many different iterations and like most things in life it certainly has been a continual evolution. But I would probably agree with you that there used to be more thoughtful, invested, informed and level-headed posters that dont seem to be around nearly as much and have been somewhat replaced by posters like yourself who seem to have a different set of values and are more interested in 'winning on the internet' so to speak versus having old-school sharing of good-faith opinions...but again, this is just my opinion/2 cents worth...

yes...as i stated then...im of the opinion that they overpaid...regardless of how great one or the other might become, the transaction is done at that moment...at that moment Hali was not all-star, Domas was...Hali was not the best player on his team, Domas was. I was very clear then about the busness notion that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Thats just how business typically works. As i stated back then I had a real issue with the Pacers giving up a draft choice-and felt a more plausible deal would have been the Kings giving up a second. Even moreso with the albatross of a contract that Hield brought with him.

Do people sometimes overpay for non-rational reasons? absolutely...especially if we are enamored with certain objects...Rick has made it clear he has been fond of Hali for a while...and Rick is one who goes after his guys...will that mean he might overpay sometimes? yes..similar to what some have suggested happened with drafting Nembhard at 31 instead of later...

Doesnt mean those of us that might feel we overpaid for certain things arent glad we have Nembhard...or Hali...love both of them...before either transaction took place...but im not a 'do the deal, no matter the cost' kinda of guy...this is the real business of basketball, not some video game...the compensations and dollars are all very real and every detail matters...

I realize not everyone is like this and many feel like the costs dont really matter...its not 'their' money...im just not like that...thats my opinion...

Im also not one who believes you can go back in time and review a deal's veracity based on values that are later determined...i dont believe that is truly objective..so no matter how great either player ultimately becomes...the deal was done Feb. 8, 2021 and regardless of even whether both teams benefit equally or not...doesnt change the values of that moment in 2021...

even so...both players are playing great....I, like many, love watching Hali play and develop...and his future is bright...

but the same can be said for Domas as well...hes lead his team to a completely different trajectory just as Hali has...and in fact. Sacramento has won more games since the trade than the Pacers have...what does that prove? probably about the same as if anything else of significance happens in the future...which is kinda my whole point...people are so concerned about "winning the deal"...both teams were trying to get what they wanted..and probably both feel like they did for the most part...did one team overpay slightly? probably...it happens...if Hali becomes a superstar and Domas does not, then time has a way of having people forget and get over it...

but it doesnt erase it either...but thats just my opinion...and i respect that others have differing opinions...

I only have a couple of things here:

            1) Kyrie giving a platform to hateful propaganda is not an opinion. It is a fact. The movie he promoted was hateful propaganda and no one can dispute that. There is a freaking Hitler quote in the damn movie, for crying out loud.

            2) Everyone can have their opinion when it comes to what Myles said in that interview. I never said that you cannot feel offended by what he said. You have the right to be offended and I'm not going to judge anyone for feeling that way. What I will insist on, though, is that the two situation are miles apart. There is no comparison between the two. The movie that Kyrie posted can lead to violence against Jewish people. It causes actual, physical harm to people. What Myles said cannot lead to violence against Pacer fans or anyone else. It doesn't cause physical harm to anyone. They are not comparable in any way, shape or form and pretending that they are is doing everyone a disservice indeed.

            3) It is really ironic to say "judge not, lest you be judged" and then immediately turn around and spent two paragraphs judging me. I don't care about winning on the internet, Taz. That would probably be you. Good job projecting.

The transaction may be done at that moment but the potential of a player factors into that. Haliburton may not have been an All-Star at the time of the trade but everyone knew that he'd be one soon. He was highly regarded as a rising star in the league which is why everyone around the NBA was shocked that the Kings made the deal. Hali didn't suddenly discover his superstar potential this year. He always had that potential which is why he became that so soon.

Personally, I don't care about who wins the deal and I'm inclined to believe that most trades are "win-win" type of deals. I think that this deal made sense for both teams and that it has helped us both. The idea that the Pacers overpaid will not find a lot of support outside of PD (most people thought that the Pacers got a steal at the time and Hali's play is probably going to reinforce that) but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

                Yet you keep "insisting"...

And u keep creating others opinions in an effort to then "insist" otherwise

Just because u insist or say otherwise doesn't make it true...no matter how many times u do so..

Just because u say something doesn't compare....doesn't make it true..it's your opinion...it's neither right nor wrong...one should respect people's opinions and realize these are NOT clearly defined subjects such as whether something is black or white-regardless of how some might try to represent otherwise
Kylie is an idiot when it comes to alot of the things he says...myles is the same..these are my opinions...you're free to have an alternative one...what Myles says generally offends me more because unfortunately hes associated with something very near and dear to my heart and something ive invested a lot of time and resources in over more than 50 years...kyrie? I literally could give two ***** about him or anything having to do with him..but thats me..my opinion and the basis for such...everyone is different...and everyone is entititled to feel differently

Once again, you have every right to think that Myles is an idiot when it comes to a lot of the things he says. You can view Myles however you want to view him, it's your right. You just cannot compare what he said with what Kyrie did because that minimizes what Kyrie did. I will say it once again in order to be as clear as possible:

Kyrie used his platform to promote a movie that perpetuated anti-Semitic stereotypes. A movie that had a freaking Hitler quote in it. That's not an opinion. It is a fact.

We could argue about that Myles interview until we're blue in the face. One side can say how awful it was and how Myles should have never said what he did and express their disappointment and disdain for him. Others can just say "meh, I don't care". It is entirely subjective and everyone is entitled to feel differently.

The Kyrie thing isn't subjective, though. There is no arguing about the fact that the movie that Kyrie promoted was hateful propaganda.

while I guess in theory most anything can be argued...we aren't supposed to be here to argue...but this is what u have a tendency to do...I don't recall anyone saying that the movie wasn't hateful propaganda...I know I sure as **** didn't....in fact I've trashed kyrie repeatedly...I don't think there's many bigger douchebags on the planet...

So why you arguing with yourself? With the things u say because noone else did...

I'm not saying that you argued that the Kyrie movie isn't hateful propaganda.

My argument is this: There is no comparison between what Kyrie did (giving a platform to hateful propaganda) with what Myles said (that the Lakers should trade for him). The comparison between their actions is disingenuous at best.

There is a ton of other comments that you could bring up and that would make a good comparison for Myles' comments. You want to use PG's Jimmy Kimmel interview? Go for it. You want to bring up Dipo's "can I come play for you" comments to the Knicks, Raptors and Heat? Be my guest. You want to use a non-Pacer example? Knock yourself out. You could use any of these comments and make an accurate comparison.

But that's not what you did. You specifically brought up Kyrie because you wanted to attack another poster. Freddie Fan said the following:

All this concern about what he said and the various name calling and insults reminds me of the annoying kids in high school. Why act like that?
And your response to that was this:

                      got it...

lemme guess...ur a huge Kyrie fan too?
You brought up Kyrie completely unprovoked and tried to use it to attack another poster. And you also threw in a couple of ad hominems and other BS assumptions in there for good measure. Freddie Fan shared his opinion that he doesn't care what Myles Turner said on some podcast and called out the various name calling and insults that have taken place in this thread. You didn't like that and then proceeded to throw out more name calling and insults. You didn't respect Freddie Fan's opinion here, did you? You were the one doing all the arguing and being openly hostile in this exchange.

                        there u go AGAIN...

                        arguing with yourself...

in a pacer's forum designed to share and discuss opinions, im guessing most are not too interested in your incessant single-voice, self-created arguments...let alone when you put your words in other peoples mouths...

when you come up with an actual original opinion, please by all means, feel free to shout from the mountaintops if youre so inclined...

and you may want to consider joining a debate club ...theyre better suited to deal with your seeming craving to argue...and maybe there you can find someone other than yourself to do so with...and you can maybe even satisfy your apparent desire to WIN such arguments!!!!!!

HIs performance these last 3 games...with so much on the line regarding some of the secondary storylines...alleging to be a team leader as they embark on their longest roadtrip in decades...and on his private stage he effectively created after his proclamations on the Woj podcast....just beyond woefully embarassing...

and likely crushed any meaningful trade value he might have developed with a couple of decent games scattered about the start of the season...

                              • Myles Turner is the Danny White of Pacers basketball.

You'd have to be a bit of an obscure Dallas Cowboys fan, but the successor to Hall of Famer Roger Staubach was a guy named Danny White. His stats were unbelievable. Great passer, few interceptions, lots of touchdowns.

                                ... in the regular season.

When it mattered, Danny White always seemed to choke. But look at his stat line and he was better than the great finisher Roger Staubach.
