The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

  • What must happen for the Pacers to not choke away a home game for game 3. Is the third time a charm?

    In no particular order.

Domantas Sabonis can not be shut out of the game by the Boston Big men. He has been completely and totally eliminated as any type of force on offense and he never was the best defender on the planet. Simply put he has to impose his will on them. He has to figure out a way to get some offense going. Hitting some mid range jumpers would probably change the entire complexion of this series, however he goes through spells (like every pacer) where he can't hit water from a boat. But barring becoming an offensive force he absolutely must dominate on the boards. 5 rebounds will not cut it. 10 rebounds or bust. Now a lot of this is because Al Horford is really and truly a great defender, however most of this is because Brad Stevens has crafted a defense designed to eliminate Domas left side. It can't matter, he has to work through it or we won't win a single game.

Darren Collison has to be an active ball mover. Right now it seems to me that whenever either he or Joseph get the ball the ball stops moving and we end up with either of them trying to go one on one with whoever switches to them like they were Allen Iverson. Neither are Allen Iverson so they need to keep the ball and thus the offense flowing. I don't blame him for defending Irving on defense. He's just so damn good at hitting shots that I don't know if anyone can guard him.

Myles Turner, for the love of God just be active on the offensive end. I don't know if its Nate or if it's Myles or whatever but there are just times on offense you don't even know he's there. I really would like to see him start roaming down low a little more not so much for post up moves that he doesn't have but for offensive rebounds that he never gets. I need to go back and look at the games but has anyone really spread the floor with him? In other words is he really drawing defenders out there or not? I don't think he is but I can't honestly say I've paid close attention to it. I think I will tonight. Also I know it's a dead horse but I'll beat it again. He has to rebound. 3 rebounds from a center that played 30+ min is not only unacceptable it embarrassing.

Tyreke Evans needs to just have a repeat of last game. Honestly that is about as good as you can expect from him and if everybody or anybody else for that matter played that well we might have snuck out with a win.

Thad Young has to rebound. We are getting killed on the glass and a lot of it is because our front court combined may be the worst rebounding starting trio in the NBA, I don't know if that's true or not but it sure feels like it. 8 Board minimum and I want to never see a Thad Young iso post move again.

Bogey has a hard road ahead because if we are going to win he will have to put up north of 25 points I would guess and not only that but he has to do it efficiently. I know its not his game but also grabbing more than 2 rebounds might not hurt the cause either.

McDermott has to hit 3 of 5 from three point land and give you a couple of drives with a potential and one. If not then honestly he shouldn't play.

    As to Nate and coaching.

Well once again are we just going to trot out the same rotations and still use the same exact cookie cutter rotations that are on an egg timer or are we going to change up? My guess is like old faithful we will do the same thing over and over. I give him the benefit of the doubt in that several key players are under performing (Sabonis, Turner, Bogey, etc) but Stevens has switched up his game plan for us and Nate hasn't changed a thing other than we now switch on defense. Same rotations same egg timer substitutions.

Okay I'm going to go wild and make a bold guess about tonight. If for some reason we can pull this off it is because one of our backups that is rarely used is going to come in and do some surprising work. So tonight's bold guess is that T.J. Leaf will come in and drop 10 points and grab 7 rebounds.

It's gonna take foul trouble for Nate to even put him in the game. And then those 10/7 will have to come in one half, because for some stupid reason Nate won't use him the other half of the game. I thought we'd lose the egg timer stuff when Vogel was sent packing but I was dead wrong.

Regular season we generated most of our half court offense from pick & roll/pop with Sabo or Myles from the top of the key. In the first two games, Horford has guarded this perfectly and the more we go to it, the more time we lose on the shot clock. It’s proba our best play all season, so hard to change now. We at least need to get Wes and Bojan running off screens off ball while we are trying to get Myles midrange going.

Defense: Collison and Joseph need to guard Kyrie like he’s Steph. Force him into the paint against Turner.

Here's what must happen, in addition to what Peck said:
1.) Play Holiday in the 2nd half
2.) Refrain from any attempt to run the offense through Thad, like ever.
3.) Fix the problem where the defenders kept losing track of guys leading to open dunks.
4.) Never stop moving on offense.

          I'd suggest these things:

#1 - Make open shots, including FTs
#2 - Myles and Domas have to contribute a lot more scoring
#3 - DC and Tyreke must have good offensive games
#4 - Ball and player movement on offense
#5 - McDermott has to give us something worthwhile
#5 - Holiday should see decent minutes in both halves

My take has been a 5 - game Boston series victory since the beginning. This is our most likely one win. We'll have the crowd/homecourt energy and the revenge factor for two frustrating losses working in our favor. If we don't get this one. game four to stay alive versus a Celts sweep is a dicey proposition.
I'd rather die standing up than live on my knees.

Just don't go into huge scoring droughts. It's that simple.

The Celtics are scoring, but they are exploding and killing the Pacers. They are averaging between 20 to 30 Points a game. This tells me that the Pacers pace and defense are adequate and could keep up with the Celtics IF THEY DON'T shoot like crap.

Well its all over but the shouting at this point. But let's look and see what we did here.

Domantas Sabonis can not be shut out of the game by the Boston Big men. He has been completely and totally eliminated as any type of force on offense and he never was the best defender on the planet. Simply put he has to impose his will on them. It can't matter, he has to work through it or we won't win a single game.
Seven rebounds with 12 points on 30% shooting is not going to get it done. He played better than the first two games but overall? Nope. I love Domas don't get me wrong but I saw someone in the game thread said Domas for Jalyen Brown and I would do it in a heartbeat. The sad new is that the Celtics would just laugh at you if you offered that. Not sure what to do here or what to tell him to work on, he simply has been missing and has been missing for most part of the second half of the season open 12-16' jump shots. He was just okay on the boards, seven is not enough to be blunt but its better than three I guess.

Darren Collison has to be an active ball mover. Right now it seems to me that whenever either he or Joseph get the ball the ball stops moving and we end up with either of them trying to go one on one with whoever switches to them like they were Allen Iverson. He's just so damn good at hitting shots that I don't know if anyone can guard him.
10 points and 3 assist from your starting point guard. As a comparison Boston's backup had 9 points and 2 assists and played about 10 less minutes. That stupid foul of Rozier while shooting a three was really a momentum killer for us. We had just trapped Kyrie and forced him into a crappy cross court pass and Rozier was not set when he took it so I don't think he would have made it but it was a moot point as Collison jumps into him for the foul. He also over dribbled a lot again.

Myles Turner, for the love of God just be active on the offensive end. I don't know if its Nate or if it's Myles or whatever but there are just times on offense you don't even know he's there. He has to rebound. 3 rebounds from a center that played 30+ min is not only unacceptable it embarrassing.
13 points and seven rebounds. Sad to say but this may have been his best game of the series so far. He was active on offense for a change and actually drew a couple of fouls. Once again demonstrating Stevens coaching IQ he has neutralized Myles shot blocking ability. Other than the third quarter of game two it hasn't even been an issue at all.

Tyreke Evans needs to just have a repeat of last game. Honestly that is about as good as you can expect from him and if everybody or anybody else for that matter played that well we might have snuck out with a win.
Let these words soak in and scare the living crap out of you. Tyreke Evans has been the best and most consistent player in these playoffs for the Pacers. Now to his credit he has been decent but that should tell you the level of craptitude that our team is playing with.

Thad Young has to rebound. We are getting killed on the glass and a lot of it is because our front court combined may be the worst rebounding starting trio in the NBA, I don't know if that's true or not but it sure feels like it. 8 Board minimum and I want to never see a Thad Young iso post move again.
Have you ever seen a layup in your life like the one he threw up in the 4th quarter? Sending Thad to the free throw line is like giving the Gleen Gary leads to losers, your just throwing it away. I'm not going to lie. I'm tired of watching Thad Young play. He's a good player but in all honesty good is the enemy of great here. Nate treats him like he is LeBron James and overplays him. We don't really have a great alternative per se but its time to find one.

Bogey has a hard road ahead because if we are going to win he will have to put up north of 25 points I would guess and not only that but he has to do it efficiently. I know its not his game but also grabbing more than 2 rebounds might not hurt the cause either.
Yip, they have him bottled up and he isn't helping any by shooting 25% from behind the arc for the game with several of them being wide open. I know we have to re-sign him but man I just hope we do not over pay to much because there has been a lot of me wondering all season long if we aren't getting contract year production from him. I don't fault him because Boston has obviously made it a point to shut him down but I just wonder how good of a second player he is going to be now that he is 30.

McDermott has to hit 3 of 5 from three point land and give you a couple of drives with a potential and one. If not then honestly he shouldn't play.
Clown Shoes. At least Nate had the decency to not let him play a minute in the second half.

              As to Nate and coaching.

Well once again are we just going to trot out the same rotations and still use the same exact cookie cutter rotations that are on an egg timer or are we going to change up? I give him the benefit of the doubt in that several key players are under performing (Sabonis, Turner, Bogey, etc) but Stevens has switched up his game plan for us and Nate hasn't changed a thing other than we now switch on defense. Same rotations same egg timer substitutions.
I completely forgot that we got swept Nate's first year here. I guess I have blissfully put that out of my mind. But if we get swept out on Sunday, and all indications are we will, then that means 2 of the 3 years we were swept out in the first round. Almost any other team that would not give you job security but this is the Pacers and well I think we can expect to see Nate back for at least another 2-3 years. He did throw in a couple of new wrinkles tonight by playing Evans, Matthews & Joseph together and it really worked as well. But beyond that? Basically the egg timer was cooking. But to his credit he did take McDermott out of the second half rotation.

More valuable playoff experience for the young players as they sat on the bench watching. I just do not see what Wes matthews brings to the table that Aaron Holiday does not. Also Doug McDermott should be in street clothes while Edmond Sumners and Aaron Holiday split whatever time he has on the floor.

Last night shows blame on Nate is the absolute lowest on the totem pole.

Nate used completely different lineups. Was extremely quick to call timeouts. Went small. The fact is you can’t just get creative when you have roster that w/o Dipo doesn’t offer much flexibility. The idea that playing Holiday or Sumner more is somehow a worthy option is ridiculous. I like Holiday, but for any buckets he might create or get he’s giving it up on the other end or even on the offensive end as he leads the point guards in turnovers per 36.

I get it. People want the coach to eek out everything he can, but what can he do? Nate can’t shoot open shots and free throws in Game 1. Nate can’t inbound the ball or make bogey kick out instead of getting blocked game 2. The chance last night was to start the 3rd when the Celtics went on a fraught and Pacers missed open 3 after open 3. Freaking Thad, perhaps our best players missed free throws and a layup. I mean, the coaching gave the players a chance to beat a far more talented team every game!

The fact is, even with Dipo, this a regular season roster. Who are the scorers? Sabonis is the second leading scorer with Dipo out! And as much as I love him, there is nothing that screams regular season player like only being able to go left. He’s like Zoolander spinning around out there trying to find a way to get to his spots the only predictable way he knows how.

Bottom line, the talent is not there. And really even with a healthy Dipo this roster is very much a regular season roster that wouldn’t have been a lock to get out of the first round. And that’s fine! The plan was to build around Dipo selling the success of this season to free agents. The injury and early exit complicates that plan, but they tried to stay the coarse with Wes. It just didn’t work out, but I can’t understand how any of that is on Nate. You can only do so much with a team of predictable scorers and very little in shot creation.

A minor point about young players and playoff experience. Simply throwing a guy out there during the playoffs is not always beneficial. If a guy isn’t ready the experience could have adverse effects.

Also, I’m pretty sure Wes was the leading scorer for Pacers in the 4th.

Nate doesn't have much to work with and he's not been bad. But I do not like how he uses Collison and Myles Turner

He should have Myles Turner setting up outside the 3 point line at all times. That way, he stretches the floor (keeping a big out of the paint). This opens up the middle for good post players like Thad and the PnR for Sabonis. Also, Myles isn't an effective offensive rebounder and he's not powering to the rim. If he's outside the arc especially at the top of the key he's going to get back on D more easily.

Darren Collison is our 2nd best 3 point shooter and he's only had 5 attempts in the post season. With the exception of Bojan, Nate isn't focused on getting his best shooters open for 3's.

Here’s the thing about Myles and 3s, he scared to shoot it! He was 1-5 last night on wide open 3s. He’s 25% for the series. He passed up a 3 in game 2 before Wes heaved that prayer.

In the playoffs you won't win if you don't have at least one guy who can just go get you a bucket when you really need it.

                        And we don't right now.

And to piggyback on this, even lower seeded teams have this. Lou Will, Terrance Ross. We literally do not have a guy that can consistently get buckets off the dribble.

Pacers made the playoffs last year and everyone said Dipo needs help scoring. The Pacers fix for that was Tyreke who literallly has the worst fg % at the rim in the league! I supported the move, but it has be accepted that even with a healthy Dipo this team would have had issues making a deep playoff run,

Yeah Myles and Domas have been disappointingly ineffective this series. They're still developing, but this is Myles's 4th series and it's been his worst one overall. Seems he should be showing signs of coming into his own in the postseason about now. And, again, the 3 pointer is supposed to be his calling card offensively, and he continues to be unreliable when we most need scoring. His confidence from downtown looks defeated, which is concerning. Where's the mental toughness?
