The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

But you? Yes. You're 100% protecting vnzla. I remember the fall-out with Hicks over vnzla's ban. I recently read that reddit that you set up during that time-span. It was called Patrolling the Paint and everyone can still go and read it. Well, I read it. And to no one's surprise, I saw vnzla calling Hicks a queen, able a Nazi, a troll and a clown (the clown thing was also said for Eleazar and others) and then say that PD mods have sand in their vaginas.

Here's the proof for every single one of those:

    1) vnzla calling Hicks a queen and able a Nazi -> https://www.reddit.com/r/PatrollingT...ch&sh=f5c6c321

    Full quote:

    2) vnzla calling able, Eleazar and others a clown -> https://www.reddit.com/r/PatrollingT...4l&sh=b52f794f

    Full quote:

    3) vnzla saying that PD mods (along with calling everyone on PD, ie. "the other site", clowns) -> https://www.reddit.com/r/PatrollingT...gs&sh=48ea7ac3

    Full quote:

    4) Other instances of vnzla calling able a Nazi:

This one also accuses able of reading his PMs -> https://www.reddit.com/r/PatrollingT...rs&sh=9b175955

    Full quote:

In this one he also calls him a troll -> https://www.reddit.com/r/PatrollingT...z9&sh=9d390879

I could go on and on. His reddit account (it's this one -> https://www.reddit.com/user/Vnzla81?...ore=t1_cfzh5el ) is overflowing with hate towards PD, Hicks and able.

You knew all of that, Peck. You knew every single thing. And what did you do? You supported him. You chose vnzla over PD. You chose vnzla over Hicks. Now, I get it. You are friends with vnzla so you stuck by your friend. I can respect that in a way. But did you ever share with anyone the **** that vnzla was talking about them in that reddit? Did you tell Hicks? You had a working relationship with him. Were you honest with him? No, you weren't. Did you tell able? You still have a working relationship with him. No, you didn't. Did you tell Eleazar or Mourning (that you said that you respected only moments ago? Did you tell any PDer that vnzla was spewing **** behind their backs? Of course not. How can you even say that you respect a poster when you are sticking up for a guy who talks **** behind their backs.

Oh, here's vnzla real opinion about Mourning, by the way -> https://www.reddit.com/r/PatrollingT...cz&sh=e913dee0

    Full quote:

You respect Mourning? No, I call BS on that. Just like I call BS when you said you respected me and then went and posted on able's wall that I'm trolling by replying to vnzla.

I did use to admire you, Peck. You used to be one of my favorite posters here. I loved your Odd Thoughts. But that reddit only proves one thing. You are a hypocrite, Peck. Unfortunately, that's who you are. vnzla talked a crapton of **** for both the forum and a ton of posters over here (basically everyone who didn't follow you in that reddit) in that reddit and yet you never said a thing. Not even when you see those guys in the PD get-together. If I were you, I would honestly not be able to look them in the eyes anymore.

That reddit became obsolete when you became a mod again. It became obsolete when Hicks stepped down as an Admin. Essentially, he was forced out and you played a key part in it. Hicks paid for his "crime" to ban vnzla. You became the admin of the site and vnzla eventually was unbanned and returned. And he has been protected ever since. Is that a coincidence? No, it sure as hell isn't.
OMG I've been found out. You've done it, you've cracked the secret Da Vinci code where vnzla & I have been plotting to take over the world together. We would have pulled the wool over all of their eyes to if it wasn't for you and your heroic work.

    Please.

Let me see how did I manage to force out the owner and operator of the site (this was prior to Able owning the domain name), come back in and through sheer force of will make sure that my evil doppelganger and myself were able to take over this forum? Oh that's right it was by my astral projection power that I have that forces people to bend to my will.

Not that I need to explain myself to you but here goes some. First and foremost what you have posted was not a secret. Able, Hicks, Shade & BillS were all perfectly aware of that account. I made no secret of it because I resigned as an admin. and opened up that for people who wanted a different direction in moderation. If you look closely you will see it wasn't just vnzla and me. Did I open it up to let vnzla have a place? To a point, yes but it was much more than that. Able is perfectly aware of vnzla's statements on there thus why they are not great fans of one another. But you know what, Able was an adult about it and had his say and went on about it.

As to being friends with vnzla? I've met him in real life maybe 5 or 6 times in however many years he's been on here. I've met him at Pacer Digest gatherings and he has attended, I think 2 or 3 games, over the years with me when I didn't have anyone to go with me to the game. He does text me at odd hours of the day to tell me about some obscure game he has watched on the west coast at like 11:30 at night. That is how I know he watches so many games. Does that make us friends? Sure in some context. He's not a bad guy and almost anyone who has ever attended a gathering in person will tell you that almost everybody gets along with him, hell even BillS and him get along in person.

But let me say two names for you. Frank Vogel & Danny Granger. Why do I say those names? Simple I am a huge fan of both of them and vnzla pretty much hates both of them and takes great joy in reminding me that Frank isn't coaching anymore and that Danny was never that good. Do I get mad and throw a hissy fit with him for doing it? Do I put up post after post after post after post after post after post with video and some form of stat that I've found telling him how wrong he is and then keep going at him when he doesn't back down dragging the entire board down with me? No, no I don't.

Thus bringing the difference between you and...well most people on here to be frank.

Let me guess you think I was shocked when I saw this and didn't expect it when you asked me to be honest? Hell no, it's exactly what I expected from you. Somebody doesn't agree with you? Well here are 10 posts from you to tell them why they are wrong and how you are right. Still don't agree with you? Well here are video shots and screen captures and some form of stat you found. Agree to disagree? Hell no, here are more posts telling us why.

Since were being honest here let's just call it like it is. You really love vnzla. How do I know this? You follow him from thread to thread and continue to engage him over and over ad nauseam even when you know the results. You've been asked to place him on ignore. Did you do it? No, you told us that you don't put people on ignore. So therefor since you can't be bothered to do the one thing that might stop all of this what is your solution? You want us to ban the one poster who dares to disagree with you.

As to me respecting Mourning? Your opinion on the matter is irrelevant.

However the one good thing that comes from this is this. Your comment from a few weeks ago about the fish rotting from the head down regarding our site was at least directed to me and not Able. I am a lot more forgiving than he is.

Now even with all of this you will notice that I am not banning you, nor am I going to go running to the other two to ask them to do it. Because unlike you I truly believe in free speech, even when I don't like it.

      • One might not like it, but even here theres limits on free speech. Or as examples am I allowed to cuss at people or make rascist remarks? No, I'm not and don't worry I never will. But, trolling isn't allowed either, but it gets "condoned" apparently.

With that said I'm not going to post on here for the foreseeable future. I might glance over, but thats about it. It's sad that it has come to this. I have been here since 2004, but this, apparently, isn't my home anymore.

        Thanks.

        • Damn this **** is more interesting than the game

btw, i didn't need a pm to enlighten me, i'm around more than you think,

first of all lets starts with the content of MY PM (private message) to Major Cold: "Argue the case not the person, personal attacks and the eternal strawman argument are not doing you any good, nor the board."
that is the full content, so for everyone to see, where the FA did I threaten him?

Now I DID threaten you; Dear Nuntius, You have received an infraction at Pacers Digest. Reason: stop iy ------- I've had enough of your snipes at this board, if you don't like it, fine leave, but stop the sniping or i'll make you leave -------

so everybody knows that as well

Nuntius, kiddo; i'm 61 years old and been hosting this board since it's inception, I paid for the domain all those years and the software license(s) requried.
personally I could care less what someone like you thinks, and I will repeat it here, if you don't like it here, please feel totally free to leave fo

You have not told me anything i didn't know, and neither anything i could care about or do you seriously think it hurts me that some person somewhere in the world talks tough on the internet?

I don't like vnzla, never have and never will but i won't exclude one day becoming friends with the person behind that monniker, but you would never understand that.
You also have no idea what free speech is, nor that you posting here is giving up that right, but hey i won't hold it against you.
Now if you could only start to listen instead of thinking you know more than anyone else and stopped arguing with 30 posts of videos and stats explained the way you want people to see it, then perehaps some people might appreciate it.

Mourning, he's dutch, he has leeway but he sure can be a prick at times.

Nuntius posters like you do alot more harm to this forum than posters like vnzla or ol blue, it's the "join us or you're a troll" attitude that causes me to puke now and then.

If you're really such a free speech warrior, (which i'm 100% sure you aren't) you would also hold high a banner saying "live and let live"

It's funny that you think you know a single thing about me, Peck. It really is. Agree to disagree? Ask Sollozzo. I don't think I've ever agreed with him on anything but I've never had any issue with him. Why? Because he never trolled. Ask freddie. We used to go over our disagrements over and over but we didn't attack each other. After a certain point, we agreed to disagreed. Or even better, ask Dr. Awesome. I talk with him daily and we disagree on most things basketball. And yet we can agree to disagree. Why? Because none of the posters I mentioned are trolls.

I agree with the definition of what a troll is that you gave in the previous thread. It's someone who just says or does things to get a rise out of people. That definition fits vnzla to a T. Yes, I've heard the stories that when he's not online he's a pleasant fellow that gets along with people. Why is he different when he's online, though? Simple. It's because he's trolling when he's online. If he went to let trolls run rampant in your site, be my guest. But when you go after people who reply to the trolls (like able did to Major Cold) then I'm going to call you out.

I will say that I'm surprised that you told able about that. I didn't expect it. And yes, I did expect to be banned which is why I PM'd able that post in case you deleted it. So, you do deserve credit for that.

As for the believing in free speech part, you are once again mistaken. I mentioned it before but I have been mod on another site for a good number of years. The General Board over at RealGM had more trolls than PD does. I only banned 1 user in 4-5 years and it was a forum-wide ban instead of site-wide ban. So, once again, you don't know me, Peck. You don't know what I stand for. But that's fine. You are free to make your assumptions.

I also have to point out one more thing. I've never asked you or anyone else to ban vnzla. I'm ideologically opposed to bans. What I have asked you to do (and you definitely remember it because we had this discussion less than a year ago) was talk to him about how his behavior is affecting the forum. I've asked able the same thing as well.

Because here's the whole problem. PD is losing people that have been regular here for a long, long time. Major Cold left a week ago. Mourning left tonight. You have regulars who say that they don't feel at home on PD anymore and they leave. This has been happening for a while now. Why? Because you refuse to moderate vnzla's trolling. In contrast, what you do moderate is the reaction to vnzla. The posters who reply to him are the ones who get in trouble, never the troll itself. Mourning makes a great point in his departing post. Why is vnzla's trolling always condoned? That's what vnzla's unbridled "free speech" and the selective moderation brings. It causes people to leave the forum.

So, no, I don't want vnzla banned. But I also don't want some of the old regulars like Major Cold and Mourning to leave the forum because of how vnzla is moderated. I can't blame vnzla's trolling on you but I can definitely blame the way that vnzla is not moderated on you. You can't continue to wash your hands and pretend that this isn't your responsibility like a modern Pontius Pilate. As an admin, you have a responsibility towards the forum. You can't let your personal feelings triumph over that responsibility.
People who try to win arguments are the worst. The point of an argument isn't to find a winner, it is to find the truth.

I was criticizing Nate for taking Sabo out that’s it

                      • As you know from the warnings and infractions you receive from time to time, you have a bad side, however I don't believe in mob-rule.
You are not protected by me and I'm the only who could do that.

Major Cold did leave because of what I said, when I posted (in a pm): "Argue the case not the person, personal attacks and the eternal strawman argument are not doing you any good, nor the board."
if that is truly the case, then I can only have pity because the truth is that statement is true, factual and puts the finger on the sore spot.

Nuntius has tried (as per his usual) to change the fact to something that suits him better, but hey, there's a reason there's a word like revisionist in the dictionary.

The issue is that this statement is not true at all. Calling out someone for making a strawman argument is not a personal attack. You accused Major Cold of personally attacking vnzla which is why he left.
