The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

    Kevin Pritchard to Pacers free agent targets: Winning is fun, join the party

    LAS VEGAS – In the East, there haven't been any monumental moves to shake up the conference beyond LeBron James' departure for the West. The Pacers, however, might have achieved a rare feat by winning free agency.

    Well, the Lakers are the biggest winners by landing James and the Golden State Warriors didn't do half bad in getting DeMarcus Cousins, either, but there's no way to be sure until the regular season starts. And even then the season is 82 games, so it'll take a while.

    The Pacers kept their starting five intact while adding three pieces that should get them past the first round of the playoffs.

    It could get them deeper. The No. 5 seed that pushed the Cleveland Cavaliers, with James, to a seventh game is better on paper thanks to president Kevin Pritchard and general manager Chad Buchanan.

    Now it's up to coach Nate McMillan, who led them to 48 wins minus a stretch power forward and efficient backups to spread the floor at shooting guard and wing.

    Pritchard sat down with IndyStar this week at Las Vegas summer league where the Pacers finished group play 1-2:

    Q: During the draft last month, you almost made a deal but held firm to preserve your cap space. Did you come close to making other deals when free agency opened?

    KP: It was more draft involvement in that we had a couple of guys that we really liked in the draft and to move up we were going to have to take on some contracts. Some teams wanted to get off contracts. We were able to move up but it would've taken us completely out of free agency. What happens is you evaluate what you think can happen on July 1 in free agency, which you have no clue, or do you move up and get a young guy that’s up and coming? As we analyzed it, what we felt like was important was this team last year made a jump like we weren’t expecting. We wanted it to be a good team, but adding a really good rookie (chosen higher in the draft) is a good thing but sometimes that’s a future’s play. I felt like in free agency and at No. 23 we had a chance to get one of our players that we liked.

    Q: That player was Aaron Holiday. So what do think about him through these first three games?

    KP: I think he’s got a chance to be really good. He just brings a real moxie to the game. He’s steady, he competes, we love his toughness. I think he can be a real pesky player in the backcourt. I really value guys that can get pressure on the ball. I think he can do that in short spurts. We know he can shoot the ball and shooting is a premium.

    Q: Alize Johnson has been better than expected with his passing and pushing tempo. Most of us didn't expect that from a projected power forward. Did you?

    KP: We had watched some film and we saw some of that. I’m a little surprised how good of a passer he is. I’ve never seen a player that just hunts balls down (as a rebounder). Wherever the ball is he may not get the rebound, but he’s in the area 90 percent of the time. In the league, you’re either one of two things at that position: You’re either an elite shooter or you’re massive diver and attack guy like Jordan Bell (Golden State) and those kind of people. I think he has a chance to be a really good attack, energy guy. I don’t think you’ll really need to say, 'Alize, you need to play a little harder.' And we like those kind of guys. Join now

    Q: Did Thaddeus Young's decision to opt-in with the final year of his deal change your free agency plans?

    KP: We were thrilled because we wanted to keep that starting five in place. Now we’ve kept the top seven guys in terms of minutes played and adding a few players that we feel like could come off our bench to be effective. Thad means everything to us. The continuity of that, what he brings in the locker room — it feels like we over-talk about that stuff — but it’s important. We know what Thad is. He’s going to be a great leader and he’ll have a heck of year. I have no doubt.

    Q: You've never had Doug McDermott, Tyreke Evans or Kyle O'Quinn. Since locker room chemistry is so important, how did you conclude they'd fit?

    KP: With O’Quinn and with Tyreke, we sat down with them. Me, Nate, Chad, we sat down with Tyreke. We were there for many hours. Same with Kyle. It was different in that we wanted to make sure he was comfortable with the role which was similar to Kyle. He recruited us a little bit. We recruited him a little bit. It just felt like the right fit. (Tyreke's) a very quiet person. He goes out, he does his work and then he goes home. There’s something to be said about that, too. With Kyle, it was very direct communication. 'Here’s your role. We had Al Jefferson who was spectacular in his role last year. He played some but we need that. We value that. That’s important to us.' He said, 'I’m going to come in and compete for minutes every day and I’ll be the best locker room guy you could possibly have.'

    The truth is our scouts start with background. We’ve got books on character and what they’re like on the court and what they’re like off the court. That plays a bigger factor. Pat Knight, Vance Catlin, they are our NBA scouts and they dig deep.

    Q: How does that balance work when figuring out what you see off-court translating to on-court, or in the locker room?

    KP: I’ve been around some guys that were really quiet and then they walked on the floor and they’d eat your head off to get a win. And I've seen guys that are pretty boisterous who play a secondary role on the court. I think it’s all independent. One thing I did with Tyreke, I made a few calls. Coach Cal (John Calipari) at Kentucky was at Kansas part of the time I was there. I said, 'Cal, no BS, I need to know what this kid is.’ He goes, ‘Well, let me tell you, we were 6-3 in Memphis and my coaches kept saying you need to put him as a point guard.' Tyreke would never say anything like, ‘I need to be a point guard.’ He said, 'As soon as we put him at the point guard position he was the most competitive guy I ever met. He’s going to go at you.' I think they won their last 30 games or something like that (actually, 27 in a row). We do our background. Sometimes you get good intel. Sometimes it’s not as good. When we talked to these guys we try to be really open and honest on what’s your role, what’s your expectations, what you’re about and we got real comfortable with those two guys.

    Q: Based on the moves, do you expect this to be a more prolific 3-point shooting team that moves from the mid-range?

    KP: I think it’s important. You see what the league is doing shooting. But I trust Nate. Sometimes what happens is they try to take away layups, they try to take away 3-pointers. So your best shot becomes that mid-range shot. That being said, everybody in the league knows your most effective shot is either a wide-open layup, free throws or an open corner 3. We all try to get those kind of shots. With McDermott, with Holiday and O’Quinn — he is a good mid-range shooter, does a nice job with that — we wanted shooting. We know shooting is a premium.

    You also need an alternate attacker, too. If you kick out to Tyreke, in my mind I see a pick-and-roll on one side, kick it out and then he’s in an attack position because he’s a really effective passer. I wanted to get his passing. You know what his mentality is? To go get a score. But I want to get him to think, 'How can I be one of the best passers in the league?'

    Q: What's the status of McMillan's contract? He's entering the final year of the three-year deal?

    KP: We’re talking right now. We value what he’s done. We understand how important he is and we’ll have conversations over the summer with him.

    Q: What will it take for a LeBron James and Chris Paul to consider Indiana?

    KP: If we win a series or get a little deeper into the playoffs with our flexibility, that’s our ultimate goal. A good core we believe in and then ultimately some flexibility to go after something like that. We may not get him, but you have to at least try. For me, having some success on the court, having our players enjoy the way we play and winning, that's the best thing Indiana can provide. If you want to come, have success, have a chance to win in the playoffs, we can provide that.

    Q: How active were you at trying to get an audience with those caliber superstars?

    KP: You’re proactive. We were talking to all of them. You better believe it. I knew this, that because our space, what we have going forward, I wanted to at least put it in every one of their agent’s ears that we’re here. If you’re going to say, 'No,' that’s fine but we’re going to at least have that conversation.



    Q: McDermott's deal of three years suggests you truly believe in him. How much of a role did analytics play in that decision because it appears it had a big role?

    KP: The thing that we try to do is we look at what a player has done. We saw what Doug did in Dallas over those last 26 games and how he was such a high efficiency catch-and-shooter and it’s just like with Victor (Oladipo) and (Domantas) Sabonis, how would they do it with us. Analytics (staff), they came to me and said, 'We need shooting. You need 3-point shooting.' Doug is a catch-and-shoot guy. I think he does a good job of cutting, moving away, curling. He’s got a scorer mentality. I love cutters. A beautiful basketball game is a balance of pick-and-rolls but then a ton of movement off cutting and Nate does a good job of it. With Doug I think we got a really good cutter. Make that defense work. You can do a lot of misdirection. Have him move out, you could kick it to him but then you’ve got the sneak drives and all that. If you’ve got a lot of shooters out there you’ve got a chance at that.

    Q: That sounds similar to what Kyle Korver has done to make himself unique, getting those wide pins and flare screens to pop for open looks. Is that the idea?

    KP: Nate has talked about this, running some Korver plays. Korver changed the league. Where Korver really made it is offensive rebound then a sniper 3. The quick 3. In Atlanta, they were elite. They taught that stuff. I know Nate will look at that sniper 3.

    Victor changed everything. Now you have one guy who can get into the paint all the time. I wanted to add another one (Evans). And they get into the paint completely different. And McDermott gives us a chance to spread the court. I think O’Quinn does, too. Did I tell you I think he’ an underrated shooter?

    Q: Do you still take pictures of the bench and show those reactions to players?

    KP: I watch the bench. I like to see how the bench is interacting. When guys get excited we’ll take a picture and put it in the locker room. It’s more about enforcing about being a good teammate, I guess. Last year we were doing that. Then we said, 'Why are we doing this? We already know.' Chad actually said that. I’m not sure where he got it. Like most good ideas, I’ll take it.

            A good interview, as usual from KP. Easy to say we're talking to all those big name free agents, and I suppose I believe him, but we'll have to see one sign here eventually. I do think Vic is going to make a big difference. I never really though Paul George was a guy other stars were clamoring to play with, but Vic might really be different. Something as simple as having DWade's endorsement says a lot to me about the way other players view Vic. LeBron calling Lance instead of PG says something too.

            I'm really hoping Tyreke can stay healthy, because I've been on his bandwagon big time and I think if he stays healthy, his signing will really pay off.

            I like Holiday more every time I see him play.

            O'Quinn gets my support just for making Knicks fans mad.

            I think McBuckets will be an asset, albeit not a huge one.

              If we had done the Parsons + #4 pick deal, and managed to sign Aaron Gordon at the expense of DC/Bogey, I would've been thrilled also. Vic, Myles, Domas, Gordon, #4? Heck yeah, that's a future.

              As it is, I'm pretty happy with the squad and looking forward to the season. But man, that would've been a huge splash.

                I would have been OK with them taking on a contract or two to move up that was the point of having cap space.

                The Denver deal to get Porter Jr would have been nice.

                    I think taking on Parsons contract plus no matter how good a rookie is , we needed help now

                    I do think, if they knew Thad was opting out, we would have taken on Faried and the 14th pick Michael Porter Jr, (or someoen else)

                      Was this an actual deal that we knew was on the table?

                      I don't think that it ever was on the table.just us "connecting the dots" based off of what we have heard.

                        We weren't going to rehaul the roster for three consecutive seasons. If we traded up in the draft and get a Porter, Miles Bridges, or Gilgeous-Alexander that means we would have a Faried, Bayless, etc. eliminating any chance to get shooting in here. Like Cable said, we would have to dump Bojan and DC to over a contract to Gordon....and then have the Magic match it. The Parsons and 4th pick wasn't a real offer by the Griz. I think the Griz would have sent it to Philly for Fultz and the 10th. But they weren't taking our pick without giving up Domas/Turner or both.

                        I prefer keeping the core. Grow within. Get further in the playoffs. Get experience. Know what you have. And get a star next year. KP has really thought of it. It is not just an accident or a thrown together plot like Bird did. It might not work. Then again drafting at 14 instead of 23 might not be better than getting Holiday. And we didn't have to take on salary.

                        We have a chance to prove it on the court with a similar but improved team from last year. And maybe we can go after a Kyrie, Kemba, Love, Harrison Barnes, Klay, Tobias, Dragic, Middleton, Bledsoe, Jimmy Butler, Randle, Noel, Cauley-Stein, Leonard, Gay, Rubio, Oubre, and/or Rivers. There are options and we can get them if we are already winning. I know many wanted an immediate improved starter at the 1, 4 and 3, but that wasn't available. What PG could we have gotten? What SF? What PF?

                        Do they fit with the culture? Do they shoot? Do they have defensive versatility? Were they wanting to even come here?

                        If the answer to any of those ?s is no or I don't know....Then that is why we did what we did this offseason.

                          So you were willing to take a step back for two years of Victor's contract in order to roll the dice on a player 13 teams passed on because of injury concerns? Porter won't play this year. Won't contribute much the year after. And when he finally figures out the league we might not have the pull to keep Oladipo.

                          I wanted Porter. But not at the cost of improving our bench and team. And I think Doug, Evans, and O'Quinn does that. As well as not losing DC and Bojan in 2019 because we took two steps back.

                            Rather have a guy that can be an star in few years than to lose the opportunity to sign bench players.

                            You can always sign bench players I don’t get this desperation regarding the bench.

                              In hindsight, I’m ok we didn’t move up. I think Holiday was a steal where we got him. I don’t believe moving into the teens would have netted any better of a player. Got lucky there.
