The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

I'd hate to hear Dun get booed, especially since he didn't screw the Pacers over while leaving.

The "tradition" of cheering a former player when they are introduced and then being merciless during the game has always appealed to me - it indicates you respect the guy's ties to the local fans but, at the end, he's now the enemy.

I'd hope A55 says nothing or at most does the "Who Cares".

Just my two cents worth on Dunleavy. I don't think Area 55 should cheer him on introduction. If you want to boo him or say nothing, I have no strong objections either way. I'm leaving it up to individual members.

During the game, our policy has always been to freely boo opposing players. Personally, I'm reserving my boos for him during the game itself. I won't mention his family, his sex life, or his arrest record. But when he's at the line, I boo and when he does his usual matador on defense, I'll laugh.

You guys should do some chants making sure Larry knows we appreciate him and so hopefully he will stay longer. Maybe chant "Larry Bird" after the team wins the game?

AREA 55 NEWS YOU CAN TAKE TO THE BANK!!!!!

Greetings, 55ers! Tonight our boys will test their mettle again at home against our antlered friends from cheesy Wisconsin. For the Bucks, whose playoff hopes were dealt another blow last night when they lost another important game” to the Wizards, the game falls into the “must win” category. If they don’t win, any whisper of a possibility of their squeaking into the #8 spot will fade to just about zero.

The Bucks prospects don’t look good. Since trading away Andrew Bogut, they really don’t have a blue chip big man. This bodes well for our bigs. If the past is prologue, our guys will find comfort from our last encounter with Milwaukee. In that set to in the Bradley Center, you will recall Roy Hibbert had 23 points and 14 rebounds, including 6 free throws in the final 74 seconds, to lead Indiana to a 105-99 victory. That loss was an initial blow to the Bucks' playoff hopes. Tonight, we can administer the coup de grace.

It’s still up in the air as to exactly whom the Pacers will play in the first round of the Playoffs. At 40-22, we have 3rd place in the East basically locked up. That would pit us against the 6th place finisher. Right now, that looks to be Orlando, although in theory it could also be Atlanta or possibly even New York.

Here’s how things stand as we go to press:

Orlando, at 36-26 is currently in 6th place. The Magic have 4 games left, against Utah, Denver, Charlotte, and Memphis. All of them are on the road except Charlotte. Their stud center, Dwight Howard, has been out with a herniated disk in his lower back and has not been playing. Whether he’ll be available for the Playoffs is still conjectural. Reportedly, he’s been doing rehabilitation work and last Friday received an epidural. The injection was intended to help him manage his pain and begin rehabbing. Howard’s mouthpieces claim that Dwight wants to return for the postseason. Whether he will or not is up in the air. Supposedly, he’ll be “reevaluated” at the end of Orlando’s regular season. Team officials say whether he’lll return for the Playoffs depends on how he responds to treatment. Meanwhile Orlando’s other stud, Hedo Turkoglu (who has been out since April 5th after fracturing a cheekbone and undergoing surgery) is about ready to resume cardio work. He’ll probably be available to Orlando come playoff time. Even without Howard, Orlando is scary. Ryan Anderson and Turkoglu are deadly 3-point shooters who can also rebound. J. J. Redick is another 3-point specialist that can cause lots of problems. It’s no cinch that we will beat Orlando even if Howard doesn’t play. During the regular season the Pacers were (1-3) against the Magic. All of the games were basically blow-outs. We blew them out once in Orlando. They did it to us twice at home and once on their turf.

Atlanta, at 37-25, is presently in 5th place. The Hawks still have 4 more games to play, all of them are at home but against formidable competition: Boston, New York, the L.A. Clippers, and Dallas. Their all-star center, Al Horford, has been out since early January – virtually all season -- with a torn pectoral muscles that he incurred against us. According to the local papers in Atlanta, Horford’s rehab has progressed well and he has been cleared for contact practices around two weeks ago. This has raised speculation that he may return to the court at any time – even before the NBA Playoffs begin. Despite Horford’s absence, the Hawks have managed to work their way into the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference. With Horford returning, they become much more dangerous in the playoffs. Horford has career averages of 12.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, but really came on in 2010-11, earning his first All-Star berth. The Pacers are 1-2 against the Hawks. The first win was back in January when Horford got hurt. The last 2 losses occurred in February and March, both being around 10 points. In Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, and Jeff Teague, they present real problems for the Pacers.

For our part, the Pacers, fortunately, are playing their best ball all year. We’ve won 10 out of our last 11 games. Only a fatigue loss to Boston has kept April from being perfect.Accordingly, the Playoff should be really interesting no matter whom our 1st Round foe ultimately turns out to be.

National Media: Noboby Takes the Pacers Seriously: Check this out, 55ers:

                        http://tinyurl.com/ctpuzmz

The Pacers don’t have a “superstar”. Ergo, the pundits say we merit no consideration as a Playoff contender. See, to be attention-worthy, you have to have a stud – a Derrick Rose, a Carmelo Anthony, a Kobe Bryant. You can’t win a Playoff without a nationally-christened “superstar”. It doesn’t matter if you have an all-star center, a former all-star forward, or a team where anybody playing can potentially explode for 20 on any given night. Nope, and the fact that you’re the hottest team in pro basketball doesn’t matter either. Indiana, y’see, just isn’t “sexy”. How does that make you feel, Pacers players?

I personally love this assessment. I personally love the inattention. I think, as Larry Bird says, it gives us “something to prove.” I also like what Roy said:

“I like to say to the guys in the locker room, we’re the best-kept secret. Nobody’s talking about us. The Indiana Pacers are the best-kept secret. Let everybody talk about the teams and have them ranked ahead of us, and we’re just going to go ahead and just do our business and chop them down.”

Pre-Game Session on Monday! Hey, listen up! I just got this from Kyle Krol:

                        “Joe,

I understand you’re the Go-To Guy for Area 55. So I wanted to see if you could spread the word to the rest of the crew. We will be holding a Pre-game viewing on Monday April 23rd before we take on the Detroit Pistons. We will need everyone who wishes to attend the event to be in the IU Health Entry Pavilion at 4:45 . Then at 5:00PM sharp we will escort the crew down to section 17 where they can catch Roy and the rest of the Pacers warm-up. (Please note that due to security reasons, we will not be able to take any late arrivals down to the Pregame Viewing).

The Pacers tunnel will be open for autographs once the doors open at 6PM.

Please CC me on the email that goes out to the rest of Area 55 as I’d like to be kept up to speed with the group.

                        Thanks & GO PACERS!”

PS - I will make sure the “Corn Dogs, Jackie” sign is up in Area 55 for the next few games. After watching Semi-Pro, I now understand the reasoning and hilarity behind the saying.”

Nice work, buddy! Make sure Kroger’s lets gives you nights off come Playoff time!

PTO and Yer Playoff Tix: Still no word from Rob Laycock on Area 55’s allotment of Playoff tix. The last word from him, as reported in my last missive of newsy notes, was “Very soon!” We’re still waiting, Laycock. You have to tell me something on this quick because some of Area 55’s restive members are getting awfully antsy.

PTO VP and GM, Casey O’Brien reports that he isn’t worried about tickets. And this gives me pause. A convicted felon, specializing in arson, I am concerned that O’Brien may be soon add NBA ticket counterfeiting to his already long criminal rap sheet. This could be bad news for you, Laycock. Get on the stick and give me the skinny on those genuine tix!

Alas! Sacramento! The Sacramento Kings are a team struggling to find an identity. Under the “guidance” of their controlling owners, Gavin and Joe Maloof, they haven’t had a winning season since the 2005-06 season. They fired their head coach after an early-season confrontation with their young and often volatile center, DeMarcus Cousins, and installed Keith Smart as a replacement. But the Kings have bigger problems than inner turmoil.

Attendance hasn’t been all that good and last year the Kings’ owners, the Maloofs, were thinking about moving south and relocating their pet rock in balmy Anaheim. This move was averted when Sacramento caved into their demands and agreed to build them a new arena. So guess what? Yup, its Groundhog Day again. The old, “build us a new arena or we walk, saga” is now playing itself out in Sacramento.

Everything looked OK for Sacramento’s keeping the Kings until recently. Right around All-Star Game Weekend, Sacramento mayor and former NBA great, Kevin Johnson, announced that a “handshake deal” had been worked out with the Maloofs to build that new $387 Million arena. Following the announcement there was much mutual back-clapping and amends-making, with the Maloofs reportedly getting all teary with joy and dancing around ecstatically with Johnson. Thus, fears of concerned Sacramento fans about the move to Anaheim were allayed. All appeared well. However that was then and this is now.

Now, the Kings’ owners, the Maloofs, appear to be backing out of the “handshake deal” that would have kept the team in Sacramento long-term.

Specifically, in order to get work started on the new Xanadu $3.5 Millinon in "pre-development fees" have to be paid. These fees, depending on whom it is you talk to, were or were not supposed to be paid by the Maloofs. At any rate, now the Maloofs are saying emphatically that they never agreed to pay any part of these fees. In fact, they're saying there's no deal at all.

The Maloofs refusal to ante up this money has now stymied progress on the new arena, caused a great deal of fan rancor, and prompted the Mayor to inaugurate what he calls, “Plan B” – an attempt to put together a group of local businessmen wealthy enough to put up money to buy the Kings from the Maloofs.

This push to force the Maloofs out has led 26 Sacramento business owners (marshalled, of course, by Mayor Johnson) to send a letter to NBA Commish, David Stern, urging him to "strongly encourage" the Maloof family to sell. That message came basically from Johnson's camp as part of his regional initiative, labeled "Think Big Sacramento."

For their part, the Maloofs have basically gone underground after giving a 90-minute, non-NBA sanctioned press conference “explaining” their position - which is basically that they never agreed to an arena deal in the first place. Their press conference was severely panned by the local media (and privately by other NBA owners) as being very, very lame. .

"Once again, the Maloofs have turned their back on a deal and shown their contempt for Sacramento," said Assemblyman Roger Dickinson (D-Sacramento).

                        Said Mayor Johnson:

"Sacramento deserves a partner who will honor their commitment, Sacramento deserves a partner who wants to work in good faith, and I think that Sacramento deserves better than we've got to this point."

A rep named Chris Lehane, acting for Ron Burkle, the current owner of the Pittsburg Penguins NHL hockey team and one of the mega-bucks types Johnson has been courting to buy out the Maloofs, was even more critical:

"As their bizarre press conference laid bare for all to see, dealing with the Maloofs is like dealing with the North Koreans -- except they are less competent In Maloof world, facts are fiction, truths are half-truths and promises are broken promises. The city of Sacramento deserves better."

Lehane’s boss, Burkle, by the way, is ranked 107th in Forbes Magazine’s list of the richest people in America (with a net worth $3.2 Billion).

Maloof family member, George Maloof, has become the Maloofs Point Man #1 in addressing the present situation. He responded to all the attacks by saying that the Maloofs no longer want Mayor Johnson involved in any arena discussions with them.

"You can't do a deal with somebody you don't trust," Maloof said of Johnson. "I don't trust him." [/I]

Since the confrontation, the Maloofs have taken to sitting in their suite at Kings games and not in their normal courtside seats, in fear of fan retaliation.

Both sides have now agreed that a cooling-off period is in order before discussing any more arena issues. However, in an interview with SI.com, George Maloof was miffed at all the outrage.

"I don't understand why you'd just pile on somebody who has done nothing wrong," he said. "We've done nothing wrong, but work in good faith."

But Johnson's premise -- that the Maloofs should sell or be forced to sell -- is the part where it all gets puzzling. No matter how badly Johnson and perhaps the NBA might want the Maloofs to hand the team over to someone else, the family continues to say it won't give in to the pressure and aren’t interested in selling. They also claim that relocation to Anaheim isn't an option this time around, even with the latest setback on the arena deal. However, lots of people are skeptical. Maybe the Kings will stay in Sacramento next year (something that looks likely), but after that it’s all up for grabs.

Given David Stern's history as the kind of Commish who can't be crossed, the notion that there would be no recourse for all of the egg now on the Commish’s face seems unfathomable. Remember the “handshake deal” was negotiated for the Maloofs by the Commish and the NBA.

The Maloofs are now claiming they voiced their concerns about their supposedly having to pay the “predevelopment money” for 7 weeks without response from the city. Most commentators say, however, that they are now apparently trying to completely back out of a deal that was essentially drafted for them by Stern himself, and funded, in large part by a loan that was to be made to the Maloofs from the Bank of the NBA.

As mentioned, Stern's team of officials handled all negotiations with the city on behalf of the Maloofs, and Stern has revealed that $67 million of the $73 million to be contributed by the Maloofs was to be in the form of a loan to them from the league (with an additional $7 million in NBA contributions to be made to the project as well that the Maloofs wouldn’t have to pay back). The city's share of the arena cost was expected to be $255 million, while arena operator and builder, AEG, had agreed to pony up $59 million.

Nonetheless, the Maloofs now contend that revenue projections for the new arena were overly optimistic and that both they and the city would be far too exposed financially over the 30-year life of the deal to make the deal comfortable.

Basically, the Maloofs are worried that if they take out the loan from the NBA, they won’t have the coin to pay it back. They are also reportedly lawyering up for an antitrust suit in the event the NBA tries to force them to sell to Johnson’s business group under his Plan B. The NBA doesn't have the Major League Baseball rules that allowed commissioner Bud Selig to assume control of the bankrupt Dodgers. Thus, in threatening a possible antitrust lawsuit against the NBA, the Maloof’s are basically angling to force Stern to support their decision to keep control of the team and possibly allow them to move to Anaheim for the 2013-2014 season if that’s what they decide they want to do.

The Maloofs initially claimed that the $3.25 million redevelopment fee was the main holdup of the deal. Now they are claiming there isn’t any deal at all. In doing so, they have likely lost more than $3.25 Million just in team sponsorships and future season ticket sales due to the public relations disaster the whole thing has become for them. Sources close to the team say there are more than 50 sponsorship contracts up for renewal for next season and there's simply not much incentive for these guys to invest in the Kings’ future. And while the Power Balance Pavilion crowd at Sunday night's game against the Trail Blazers was surprising in its size (16,012) and serenity -- not to mention the appearance of Joe and Gavin Maloof, who watched the game from their suite but scrapped a plan to sit courtside and perhaps even address the crowd -- it's hard to imagine the fan support continuing without the return of hope to Sacramento.

What it all means going forward remains unclear. Those who see the Maloofs as cash-strapped, debt-ridden owners with no business owning a team hope the likely downturn will force them to sell. Others predict they'll survive next season and have all the evidence they need to tell the NBA to get out of their way and let them split for Anaheim or elsewhere.
                        .
George Maloof, of course, is insisting publicly that the family wants to remain in Sacramento and has reiterated his stance that Johnson is killing the downtown deal by refusing to negotiate further with them. He has also reportedly reversed his family's long-held stance on the possibility of renovating the current facility, but Johnson said he has no interest in that option.

"Are we open to further negotiating [on the downtown arena deal]? Of course," Maloof said. "We want to keep trying, because we feel it's important for the team and important for the city. But we are not plotting to move. That is not an option."

So here’s the bottom line. The Maloofs would have had to take a $67 million loan from the NBA to make a Sacramento arena deal happen – money NBA Commissioner David Stern was ready to pay. However, the Kings already owe the city about that much and the franchise also is said to owe the NBA anywhere from $75 million to $100 million or more. Thus, adding $67 million in Stern charity would have pushed the Kings debt to around $200 million.

The Maloofs only own a bit more than 50 percent of the Kings. Forbes magazine values the team at around $300 million. Do the math: The Maloofs' share of the Kings is thus worth roughly $150 million. They would have had to take on $200 million in debt to continue to play ball with Sacramento. That's called being underwater.

Of course, truly upright people would have come clean honorably a long time ago instead blowing it all up at the 11th hour and then blaming Sacramento.

                        But that’s the Maloofs.

It's no wonder the NBA treated them like children too young to sit at the big boys' table for a full year of the arena negotiations. They don't have much going for them except the old American axiom of "possession being nine-tenths of the law.”

They own the Kings and that's it. Unfortunately, this is the flaw in Kevin Johnson's Plan B. Nobody likes the Maloofs owning Sacramento, including The Commish and the other team owner's whom Stern basically works for. However, none of these owners would like being put in the same position as the Maloofs -- being forced to sell one of their play toys. Hence, forcing the Maloofs out would make for a bad precedent besides, possibly, being illegal under the antitrust laws.
The chances of Stern divesting the Maloofs of their ownership of the Kings is roughly that of a snowball's in hell. That's bad news for Sacramento.

                        And with that, I end.

                        GO PACERS! GO AREA 55!
