The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

To all the Area 55ers who made the Milwaukee trek, thanks. Great effort. The locals didn't know what to make of us and we almost gave the place a home court atmosphere.

All thanks to you, Joe! You made it happen.

Watching the game now it's frightening how loud us 30-35 came across from that far away. Milwaukee had some bad apples like anyone, but several cool people came up to me and talked to me about what we were doing. Will never forget that trip.

AREA 55 NEWS YOU CAN TAKE TO THE BANK!!!!

          Salutations, 55ers!

After blowing out Milwaukee Saturday on the road, our Pacers return to our fair city to try, for the fourth and last time this season, to conquer the Miami Heat. The Heat has beaten us 3-straight. I’ve synopsized the painful history of our encounters with LeBron & Co., below:

          Game 1: MIAMI – 1/4/12 – 118-83

The Miami Heat, playing without Dewayne Wade, still destroyed us. The game was really over at half-time, with the Heat then holding the lead 62-39. Basically, we did everything wrong and they did everything right. LeBron James had 33 points and 13 assists, Chris Bosh added 22 points. James also grabbed 8 rebounds and the Heat turned up the defensive intensity.

Roy Hibbert had 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Pacers. Tyler Hansbrough scored 14. Basically, the Pacers were done in by a miserable 2nd quarter, going 1 for 15 from the field and committing 10 turnovers that Miami turned into 10 points. Frank Vogel called this quarter “a perfect storm,” with a lack of execution, missed open shots, and the Heat defense melding to spell disaster for the Pacers.

Indiana's main overall problem was an inability to slow Miami's transition offense. And because the Pacers shot so poorly and committed so many turnovers, all the Heat had to do was grab the ball and start running. They did this quite successfully. The Pacers trailed only 29-27 after the first quarter. But in the second half, they never got closer than 12 points and the lead eventually ballooned to 36.

What happened? Danny Granger scored only 6 points on 2-for-13 shooting. He missed 6 of his 7 shots in the 1st half and committed 3 turnovers. The Pacers ended up shooting 34.8 percent from the field. They committed 23 turnovers that Miami turned into 28 points.

          Game 2: INDY 2/14/12 – 105-90

The Pacers came into this game on a low – having lost 3 straight. Miami made sure our funk went to 4 straight. After a quick start, the Heat basically dominated the Pacers in every facet of the game until the closing minutes - when the Pacers finally started trimming the lead to make the game look a bit closer than it actually was. Actually, the Heat never gave Indiana a chance. Things were going so well for them that, at halftime, James turned to the crowd and made hand motions acting like he was reeling in a fish. During a third-quarter timeout, the Heat’s Mike Miller grabbed something resembling a rope from the team trainer and acted like he was going to bring in a steer. There were smiles all around on the Heat bench all night long. It was an embarrassment for the Pacers.

James had 9 points and 6 assists in the first 14 minutes. He finished with 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Wade made his first 5 shots and had 10 points in a little more than 8 minutes. Heat rookie guard Norris Cole tied his season-high with 20 points, and Chris Bosh had 13 points and 7 rebounds. Miami limited the Pacers to 6-of-23 shooting in the first quarter and only a late flourish allowed the Pacers to finally climb over the 40 percent mark. It was downright ugly for Indiana.

"Pretty embarrassing," Roy Hibbert said after scoring 10 points. "They just hit us at the start and we just weren't able to recover. ... None of us came ready to play tonight."

David West led the Pacers with 14 points and Paul George had 12. Worse, Danny Granger suffered a sprained left ankle late in the 1st quarter and never returned to the game. He finished with 3 points.

The Pacers' starting five of Darren Collison, Paul George, Danny Granger, David West and Roy Hibbert entered the game rated as the top five-man unit in the league in +/- at +100, 14 points better than any other 5-player combination. Against the Heat, Indiana's starters put the team in a 23-9 hole and, after Danny left the game with his injury, they didn’t play together again as a unit.

          Game 3: MIAMI 3/10/12 93-91 OT

In this one, the Pacers played hard and basically had the game won in regulation. Fate intervened and the Pacers really lost it twice, first in regulation and then again in overtime. In regulation, a series of errors by Dahntay Jones were crucial (Dahntay got trapped by a Heat double-team in a corner after crossing the half-stripe. Instead of asking for a time out, he threw a bad pass that LeBron intercepted and then converted into a jam. Dahtay managed to foul him in the attempt, but the foul wasn’t strong enough to prevent LeBron’s deuce. LeBron then converted the foul to make a 3-point play). Then, a Pacer miss was followed by a LeBron 3 from the corner that Danny Granger was late in defending. That tied the game. LeBron then took over on the defensive end, swarming Darren Collison so much that DC couldn't even get a pass off, much less a potential winning shot. This put the game into overtime.

In the OT, the Pacers played well at first. Granger's runner with 2:01 left in the extra session gave Indiana a 91-86 lead. Unfortunately, the Pacers didn't score again after that and the Heat crept back. James made another 3-pointer to start a Miami rally, Bosh tied it with a jumper with 1:03 left to play, and a Udonis Haslem offensive rebound off a missed 3 by James gave Miami the ball and a chance to take the last shot of the extra period. Haslem passed to James, who waved his fingers toward Wade. James then handed the ball off to Wade and walked to the corner near the Heat bench, as if wanting to have a better view of what was to come next.

Wade then dribbled slowly at Paul George, who was waiting for him at the 3-point stripe. Wade head-faked Paul into the air, drew contact with him, and then released a 3-point shot that dropped in with 0.10 left on the clock. Wade then ran to the other end of the court in celebration, pointing to the floor and shouting: "This is my house." Moments later, the power went off in the arena. "[Wade] shot the lights out," Bosh said afterward.

Wade wound up with 28 points, James added 27 and Bosh had 13 for the Heat. It was a painful loss for the Pacers. Over the last 18:18 minutes of play, Miami led for just 12.2 seconds.

David West finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Pacers. The Pacers also got 14 points from Collison and 12 from George.

"The OT was a wrap-up and summary of what this whole game was," George said. "We started off the aggressive team and we gave up the lead."

The Pacers led by as many as 14 in the first half, taking a 44-39 edge. Miami was 0 for 7 from the floor with four consecutive turnovers during one stretch, scoring only three points in 8 minutes.

"We have to understand that we're a good basketball team," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "We proved that we could play with these guys. We should have pulled out this game. I feel like we gave the game away. But give credit to Miami. LeBron made superior plays and Dewayne made superior plays when the game was on the line."

          My Prediction for Tonight?

We win. It’ll be tough, but I think the Pacers will get the Miami monkey off our backs.

We know Miami now. We know all the keys: DG has to have a good game. DC2 has to corral Norris Cole. Our bigs need to win the boards. Our reserves need to crush their inferior second unit. Dahntay will have a stellar game, as he’ll be thirsting for revenge.

          I like our chances.

Area 55 needs to really bring it too. Paint up! Scream! Let’s get the crowd into things. This is a VERY important game.

The Milwaukee Trip. To the intrepid voyageurs who somehow made it to Cheeseland, many thanks. We were loud, visible, and made the Bradley Center a lot like BLF. I’d like to think we contributed, in a small way, to the blowout our boys effectuated on the Bucks.

          SOME FUN FACTS ABOUT MIAMI!

Let’s Forget That Dunk! Destroy the Tape! In 2009, in a pickup game held at a skills clinic at Xavier University organized by LeBron and sponsored by Nike, Xavier University’s Jordan Crawford got around LeBron and slam-dunked on him. The King, who was still dealing with an urgent text he had just received from his Momma at the time, and was busy trying to work those tiny buttons, then had the organizers of the clinic confiscate the videotape so no one afterwards would know the dunk had happened. No lie!

It is rumored that NBA Commissioner Stern, a shrewder guy than LeBron, tied up all the loose ends by having the cameramen that were involved in taping the episode killed. Crawford was then forcibly hypnotized and made to forget his amateur dunk on The King ever happened.

LeBron's Wikipedia article on the subject, despite treating LeBron generally with kid gloves, admits that this attempt at censorship "courted controversy." However, and fortunately for NBA gate receipts, neither this, nor any of the other controversies LeBron has courted in his patchy career, really mattered.

Unfortunately not all copies of the tape were destroyed. Here’s that dunk LeBron would like everybody to forget:

More LeBron Momma Trouble! Back in April, Gloria James, LeBron’s mother, was arrested by Miami Beach police after reportedly assaulting a parking valet at the Fontainebleau Hotel at 4:45 AM because Gloria felt it was taking too long to have her car delivered.

          Here’s Gloria: http://tinyurl.com/7g3ft22

Police said Gloria, 44, had a strong odor of alcohol on her breath and her eyes were bloodshot when officers arrived to investigate the incident. They said several witnesses supported valet worker, Sorel Rockfeller's, account of the alleged assault.

Rockfeller told reporters that after berating him, Gloria slapped him “very, very hard” in the face.

"When she finished slapping me, she fell down on the floor," Rockfeller said. She told me, 'Do you know who I am?' when she slapped me.".

After her arrest, Gloria was taken to the Miami Beach police department, where she was issued a "Promise to Appear" on charges of “Simple Battery” and “Disorderly Conduct.” A police report says she was released to Heat executive, Steve Stowe.

"It's very sensitive because it's your mother, of course," LeBron said after the incident. "People around me are helping me, helping her. You have to move forward,"

After being cleared to return to work, Rockfeller asked to have his company relocate him away from the Fontainebleau, reportedly because Gloria hangs out a lot there and he didn’t want to have to see her again. He also filed a lawsuit against Gloria -- demanding $15K+ for pain, emotional distress, humiliation and mental anguish.

Gloria’s criminal case was resolved in a plea deal. The Miami prosecutor agreed to drop the Battery charge in exchange for her donating $1,000 to a Haitian earthquake relief fund (Rockfeller was apparently born in Haiti) and performing 20 hours of community service. On completion of the service hours, the Disorderly Conduct charge would also be dismissed.

Unfortunately LeBron was unable to have the surveillance camera video of the incident destroyed. It’s here:

          http://tinyurl.com/7z596gd

So it goes. Once you become a superstar, your whole family gets tagged with stardom too. Sadly, your mom can’t even *****-slap parking valets with impunity after that. It gets in the papers and becomes a sensitive thing.

Let’s be vocal tonight, 55ers! Tonight we Beat the Heat!

          GO PACERS! GO AREA 55!

A little belated, but also wanted to thank Joe for leading us through the wilderness to Milwaukee, WI, and express our gratitude to Rob and the Pacers for getting us the tix to the game. The wifey and I had a great time (and I kept the new car clean, or else I would be sleeping on the couch now). Thanks also to Chris Denari and Brooke for coming up to visit with us after the game! The most fun away game I have ever attended in any sport!

I've been meaning to ask someone this: do the Pacers play a different version of this before the game? It always sounds like a slightly harder version, but maybe it's just the fieldhouse acoustics.

Just some random posts on Bucks fan sites I thought we might all enjoy.

Is there a Pacers crowd out there tonight? Could of sworn I heard an airball chant after Ersan’s missed three.

Indiana's Squad Six equivalent is apparently there. www.BrewHoop.com

I heard that too I wondered why they’d do that

We should thank Pacers fans for helping out our organization's revenue.

Is that "Area 55" that the annoucers just mentioned?

Pacer fans are taunting the Bucks fans, I'd like to see them do that in Philly, Oakland or NY.

Squad 6 and Area 55 need to battle it out with fists

GAD and the Squad 6'ers took their first official road trip to the Indiana fieldhouse last season, Area 55 have just returned the favor. I like it.

Also enjoyed listening to Jim trying not to trip over saying Area 55 was Roy Hibbert's version of Andrew Bogut's Squad 6. Can't go mentioning an opponent now Jim

It seemed to me that the die hard Bucks fans were more hospitable than the casuals there. The less Bucks apparel someone had on the douchier they were to us.

Probably my favorite part about the Milwaukee game was the folks who joined us. The girl who came up to us and told us that her and her friend were originally from Indy and had moved to Milwaukee and were still Pacers fans, and that they were sitting across the arena from us and heard us better than Squad 6 was awesome. She asked us if we did a "hundred point dance", to which we responded "what's a hundred point dance?" which of course is a dance when you get 100 points. We don't have one of those, but several of us did it that night. And the 2 guys who came over in the 4th were awesome too. They were so excited to be a part of us for one night. The one guy right after the game was saying he had to take something from this to remember it, and we all went out in the hall and took a picture with them. Good freakin times.

I love that song but it kind of killed it for me when I saw how much Squad 6 uses it. They play it at the beginning of the 3rd quarter and put up a flag for every international player on the team.
