The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

Re: Anyone Want to do the Biggest Loser Thread Again???

If any of you guys don't do this already, interval training on cardio machines is an excellent way to lose weight and build endurance.

Let's say you are doing a 30 minute program on a bike (It took me a while to be able to do this, and I suggest you start closer to 20 minutes, but its the same system). First five minutes, be on resistance level 6. WHen the clock strikes 25, move the resistance to 12-15 for 1:30. WHen the clock hits 23:30, go back down to your original resistance. It will feel really easy and you will actually be working harder without feeling you are. Every time the clock stops at a minute ending in 5 or 0 (25, 20, 15, etc.) repeat this process. It is so much better for you than continuous cardio training and it gives you that great, "I just kicked my own *** working out!" feeling afterwards.

Re: Anyone Want to do the Biggest Loser Thread Again???

I'm really psyched for everyone working to lose weight and/or maintain a healthy lifestyle. It's a very personal challenge. I've never participated in the PD Biggest Loser, but I've followed along through the years. Kudos to everyone for taking the leap!

I've experienced my share of ups and downs and years of frustration with my weight and eating habits--which are ongoing. I'm a little over 6'3", and whether for good or for ill, it's fairly easy for me to pack on both fat and muscle. My highest weight was 300 pounds, which I reached about ten years ago. Even though I was unhappy with my weight and eating habits I didn't make a concerted effort to lose weight until March of 2011. Through a combination of calorie restriction (I use MyFitnessPal), cutting out a lot of junk food, and taking up running I made it down to 185 last Fall. However, a winter of lazy discontent brought me back up over 200 again. So now I am embarking on what I hope is one last push to shed the last of the excess fat hanging around my midsection. Right now my body fat percentage is around 17%. That's not great, but wow is it an improvement from where I was just two years ago.

Ideally, I would probably end up around 180 after putting back on any muscle, which I hope to do as part of my own self-guided fitness program. I have some ideas, but I need to keep researching the best ways for me to 1. eat more healthily, 2. continue to lose excess fat, and 3. put on muscle. So, I have much more to learn and do. For now I'm sticking to running and watching my caloric intake. These need to be lifestyle decisions, not short-term weight-loss decisions. Otherwise, I'll fail.

Anyway, I may not participate much if at all in PD's Biggest Loser, but I'll keep an eye on the thread. I wish everyone the best as you go forward in your journey!

I need to lose about 25-30 lbs. I've lost about 4 in the last week and a half. Added green juice, increased the size of my breakfast and decreased the size of meals later in the day (no more eating a whole meal after 9pm). Decreased the amount of packaged food I eat, decreased the amount of gluten in my diet. Last but not least, I started running from Zombies while on an elliptical machine to take the pressure off my knees (https://www.zombiesrungame.com/) So far, so good.

Re: Anyone Want to do the Biggest Loser Thread Again???

I did poorly eating wise this past week but I weighed the same as last week 333 lbs. The Adipex is working good overall. Since my beginning a weight loss program through the VA alone for support it was a roller coaster effect. I started their program in 02/13 with a great nutritionist weighing 362 lbs. AT first I dropped 10 pounds a month over 2 months. After that my PTSD really kicked in and I gained it most of it back For me it is hard not to eat after 9pm since I work at least until 9pm five to six days a week. I went to my family doctor about my knee and he refused to look at the knee until I drop a minimum of 50-70 lbs. He prescribed me the Adipex then. I still have yet to start an exercise program. My plan is to start slow on the treadmill because of my knees and ankle. I also am going to do a light workout routine with weights. I will have to test my resolve with weights because of strength in my left shoulder due to rotator cuff surgery.

Re: Anyone Want to do the Biggest Loser Thread Again???

gonna bump this thread. i started dieting 7 weeks ago and exercising more. I had been losing weight all year just from working more (i'm on my feet all day running back and forth so its pretty helpful) after being unemployed for awhile, but the diet really kicked things into overdrive. I've gone from a size 46 to a size 40. I was a 48/50 when I was unemployed. And tonight I ran over a mile straight for the first time in probably close to 10 years. I don't know pounds lost as I'm trying not to get caught up in the numbers and its working pretty well so far. I'm almost at the size I was when I graduated high school. Which is still bigger than I want to be, but reversing 5 years of weight gain in about two months is pretty exciting.

Re: Anyone Want to do the Biggest Loser Thread Again???

I'm gonna join this thread as I need to change my lifestyle a bit and I believe this is the perfect time to do it. As some of you know I recently had to put my dog down and my wife and I have noticed how much we don't do now because we always had the obligation/joy of taking care of the dog before, and we find ourselves with a great sense of freetime, so we have both decide to really buckle down and make exercising and fitness apart of our lives again. Over the past 2 weeks we have really made a conscious effort to take 30 minute evening walk before dinner, and we have been doing some of Jillian Michaels videos every other day but those take quite an effort to push through and actually do. My wife loves them, but she has motivation issues. But my wife is all of 115lbs and just needs to tone it up if you will, and build some strength.

I'm 6ft tall, 245lbs. I'm struggled with weight for most of my life, except for college when I was in my best shape and weighed only 180lbs and a size 30 would fall off my waist. 10 years later i'm 31 years old and size 40. I've spent the last 7-8 years working a desk job /career, and it has really taken a toll on my overall health. I have prehypertension, lower back problems, and you start to notice things that you could easily do in your early 20's that you can't do now on your best day because the weight is holding you back. My goal is to get down to 200lbs again and to touch rim on the basketball court again.

One thing i really want to do is find away to get some exercise in while I am at work. Its so easily to plop down in this chair for 3-4 hours a time and not move. So am always trying to fidget my legs while sitting down. I've also tried getting up and doing 15 push ups every 60-90 minutes all day long. I did this once for 2 weeks straight, but it is very hard to stick to because exercising is not considered work behavior. So I find myself sneaking to supply room or the restroom to do my push ups. But this is supposed to help keep your metabolism from completely shutting down during the day.

I've used my fitness pal in the past. One thing that really hits home when it comes to calorie deficits is when you add up all the sodas you consume in a week, and you realize that you have to hit the gym twice just work off those calories. So in effect if I gave up Sodas I would be gaining 2 extra work outs. Hard to give up Sodas though, i'm down to 1 a day though.

I haven't posted on here in quite some time but I have plateaued and am still around 332 lbs. I am gonna try to get going on the treadmill and start writing down what I eat and drink more water. It is hard top do the treadmill now because I walk so much at work. Also taking the adipex every day as well because I end up missing several a week because I forget to take it in the morning.

No offense but that sounds awful. Doesn't sound healthy at all. I hate the word diet my family still tells me I'm on a diet and I guess I have been on a diet for 2 years. I changed my lifestyle and I am glad I did. I will never go back to eating that nasty junk food again on a regular basis. I was just uneducated on the subject of nutrition. Before I would eat 6k calories a day and didn't think anything of it because that is what I knew. I though McDonalds and BK 7 days a week was normal. Once I learned what a health life style was losing the weight was really easy for me. I was 240 when I started and after 6months I was down to 170. The best part is I feel great so much more focused than before. That food was so bad for my mind. I am just glad I learned before it was to late. I am back to playing basketball everyday. I couldn't play two years ago because the weight caused my knees to pop out of place all the time. I haven't been hurt since I feel great. It truly is a lifestyle change. If you commit yourself it can be done. Really rewarding being healthy. That is my goal just stay healthy.

SO then what did you start eating? If you had to eat out for lunch what did you usually get?

well today i ate a banana for breakfast at about 9. For lunch I cooked Caribbean Jerk Turkey at about 12:30. I then went and played basketball for 3 hours. I ate a salad at about 5:30 and went to the Red Lion grog house for dinner at 8 and had their Indian Curry Chicken dish served with white rice. I just finished a quick workout because i will be busy the next few days and wont be able to workout. I like cooking myself more than eating out that is for sure. I tend to cook at home for almost every meal. I only eat out with friends. When I am in school which starts next week I basically only eat salad and bananas because I have no time to cook in between classes.

I eat a ton of turkey, chicken and fish fruits and veggies(well that about sums up all I eat ) But when I eat out I normally eat fish or salad. I didn't use to like salad but I love it now. Only places that really sucks is the pizza/Italian places. It seems like I never eat when i have to go there. I try to stick to no pasta and especially no bread. Taking bread out a few months ago has made a huge difference. So much more energy bread and not drinking anything but water or coffee for me have made the most difference. The only food I still want that is junk is chocolate pancakes. I still let my self eat them about once a month. But I mean my body doesn't really want that food anymore. I bet if I was forced to eat Taco Bell for a few days it would give my body a fit(that use to be my favorite food lol would eat it all the time)I went to the fair the other day and didn't eat they didn't have anything that looked good. The smell of a funnel cake made me want to puke. 3 years ago at the fair I would of ate a funnel cake and an elephant ear and probably a lot more lol.

Cutting out pasta and breads and switching to only water and coffee has made a huge difference for myself too. I remember a couple weeks into my diet, I had a soda for the first time since I started. I felt so terrible after drinking it. Was all bloated and just didnt feel good.

I know that I have not posted in here my progress in a while. I plateaued at 330 and was planning to start my exercises on the 8/05 but I was in an automobile accident driving home from work on the 4th. It was totally my fault, I missed a red light and got t-boned hard, hard enough to put me on 2 wheels for a second. By the time I bounced and stopped I was a half of a block away from where it happened. It totaled out my truck. It wasn't a valuable truck but I got it from my dad when he died. There was a lot of sentimental value there. I did get a tens unit/ems unit to help with the neck pain and joint pain. I found out also if you use it in higher frequencies it works your muscles in the area where the leads are placed. It freaks my wife out when I have it on high especially on my arms because you can see the muscles contracting and releasing. Hopefully tomorrow I will have a truck again and hopefully not be as bummed out. I am hoping to be in the 320's by next week and if I do I think a reward is in order. I plan on getting a new tattoo of a soldier's cross with the American Flag in the background for my fallen friend who died in Iraq, 2 years from retirement.

Not sure if its just me but I did a lot of running this summer. My Diet wasn't the best but I actually gained a few pounds. After my next run(half marathon in september) I am going to go back to elliptical and weights. Lost 100 pounds with elliptical weights and healthy eating. Running to much requires recovery and just isn't very effective for weightloss, atleast for me.

Re: Anyone Want to do the Biggest Loser Thread Again???

Teamed up with some coworkers and formed a boot camp headed up by one of the guys that's in super great shape. Right after work at the top of a parking deck. Nice free way to work out. A lot of cross fit...which is my first time doing them and I feel like I'm always going to be "sore". Cross fit is some really challenging stuff.

I've always been a skinny twig, but I've been gaining weight the last few years since I haven't been as active. 5'10 who's mostly been around 140-150lbs. I was up to 185lbs a month ago. Down to 173, but have only lost an inch on my waist...want to lose another 4-5inches off my gut. Shooting for a target weight of 160, but just want to lose the gut, not really fixated on the weight.

Cause I'm so outta shape, the guy coaching us says that I'm so outta shape that I'm building a lot of muscle, and not to get discouraged cause the gut will be the last thing to finally go after you've built up some muscle.

Been eating a bit better, but it's a slow process...I've built up some really bad habits it turns out. Love carbs too much. Getting there though. Only get 1 sweet per week (which hasn't been difficult at all), been eating salads for lunch, and working on cutting my portion size. Man, we Americans eat way too much food. hahaha

Hope everyone is finding success in losing weight!
First time in a long time, I've been happy with the team that was constructed, and now they struggle. I blame the coach.
