    Default Ads on NBA jerseys

    http://www.theindychannel.com/news/n...ads-on-jerseys

"Under the new TV deals, NBA teams maintain the rights to sell the jersey advertising, which has an estimated value ranging from around $800,000 for small-market teams like the Memphis Grizzlies to more than $10 million for large-market teams like the Los Angeles Lakers."
    however,
The NBA has not confirmed when, or if, ads on jerseys will be a reality.
I don't particularly care to see this, but money talks. Would these ads be on the jerseys
they sell to the public as well?

Bit off topic but I've noticed with the NBA and the NFL jerseys, that when you order one, there is only (I think) the option with a name of a player at the back of it. If you go to the team store, can you find one with no name on it?

I agree with the OP. I would prefer not to see this, but it seems inevitable that ads on jerseys will take hold in the NBA.

Inevitable. Once the day arrives that the potential income from jersey advertising is greater than the harm caused to the NBA product, or TPTB feel the harm will easily be overcome, then it will happen. Mo money = mo money.
Nuntius was right for a while. I was wrong for a while. But ultimately I was right and Frank Vogel has been let go.

I hope it never happens. I think the championship badges on the back neck of the jerseys look infuriatingly like somebody's shirt tag hanging out, and I thought the idea of them was kind of cool when I first heard about them. I love the clean look.

I don't see the big deal. It's just change, which nobody ever wants or likes.

Names not used to be on the back of jerseys, now they're everywhere. Corporate sponsors used to not have their names on stadiums, now they're everywhere. Ads on jerseys is just the evolution of capitalism in sports. We won't even notice it in 10 years.

I'm sure we'll ***** about it in 10 years however, if Simon has been raking in the green without dipping into the Luxury Tax once or twice.... but that's for another thread.

Silver said it was "inevitable" at a presser a week or so ago. Would certainly prefer it never happened but I'm not gonna get up in arms about it. Just hope we don't wind up with Steak'N'Shake or something.

You see it all over the place in European soccer and it does not bother me at all when watching Man U versus Liverpool.

As long as they do not cover every inch of a jersey it will not be a big deal.

What if they just removed the players and owners entirely? The world would carry on and the government could find new ways to shaft the taxpaying public.

I bet we end up with Angie's List as the jersey sponsor.

Just because it's not a big deal doesn't mean we have to like it. If they put ads on jerseys I will continue watching the NBA, but I doubt I'll ever get to a point where it doesn't move the needle at all.

The one question I have about it, it'd kill the replica jersey market right? Are the ads even on the replicas? Or do they tier it, X $ to get the actual jerseys, Y to get the real jerseys and the replicas?

I dunno, I just don't think it's a big deal. They're not gonna go the WNBA route and replace INDIANA with CUMMINS or whatever.

I don't like it in soccer, and I don't like it in basketball. Some things just shouldn't have advertisements on them.

There is zero harm to the NBA product unless they start making players play dressed as the kool aid man, ronald mcdonald, or the burger king. I'm surprised it hasn't been done already.

As a fan, if I walk into the Home Court Gift Shop to purchase a replica jersey,
I don't mind shelling out $$ to essentially become a free walking billboard to
show support for my team. I can say though that if that jersey is going to
have a bunch of ads on it for corporate sponsors, I would want for them
help subsidize the cost of that jersey if they want for me to walk around
giving them free advertising. Yep, that jersey better cost way less than
    it does without those ads.

I'd rather see them put ads on the floor, like how Texas Tech had O'Reilly's Auto Parts on theirs during the Bob Knight era.

Maybe allow companies to sponsor different areas on the floor.

"Was he outside of the McDonald's restricted area before taking the contact?"
"Roy Hibbert steps up to the Firehouse Subs free throw line."

I will not buy any jersey that has any advertising on it... Not a chance... I would just buy the tshirts with the players name on the back... I think the NBA better consider the lose in revenue from jersey sales...

I only but the sherseys anyway, but I agree, I'm not shelling out my money to show any support to Lilly, or whatever. Just trying to support the Pacers.
