Most people still view it simply as The Brawl.
More than three months later, Indiana Pacers rookie David Harrison looks back on that ugly night at Auburn Hills, Mich., and sees it for something else - The Opportunity.
Though Harrison is facing a misdemeanor assault charge for his role in the Nov. 19 brawl, he admits the episode accelerated his indoctrination into the NBA.
With the Pacers hit hard by suspensions after the brawl, the former University of Colorado center spent one month receiving on-the-job training: He played at least 25 minutes in 11 of Indiana's next 13 games.
"I became more comfortable," Harrison said Wednesday. "It gave me some experience and I just became better and better."
Though his playing time was reduced after forward Jermaine O'Neal returned from a 15-game suspension, Harrison is averaging a respectable 6.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots heading into the Pacers' game tonight against the Denver Nuggets at the Pepsi Center, his first pro appearance in Colorado.
"It's my homecoming," said Harrison, who will leave about 20 tickets for friends. "I hope they don't boo me."
Fate has prevented Harrison from facing Denver since Indiana made him the final pick in the first round of the 2004 draft.
Injuries kept him out of two preseason games and the only regular-season meeting between the Nuggets and Pacers. He even missed a summer league game against Denver because of a sprained right knee ligament.
"I've been avoiding the Nuggets like the plague," said Harrison, who has kept his sense of humor in the wake of the brawl and the pending charge against him, which he claims has not been a distraction.
"I played at Colorado, the land of scandals."
Though Harrison was not suspended, he is awaiting trial for allegedly hitting a spectator. He calls it "scary" that the maximum penalty is three months in jail and a $500 fine but is optimistic he will be found not guilty.
"I just want my story to be heard (in court)," said Harrison, who said he was trying to diffuse the situation.
MARTIN LIMPING: It appears Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin will be playing in pain for the remainder of the season.
Martin played only 8 minutes Tuesday against the Atlanta Hawks and is questionable for the game tonight because of his chronically ailing left knee.
The Nuggets considered having Martin undergo a magnetic resonance imaging exam Wednesday but decided to forgo the test.
"The odds are it's basketball wear and tear," coach George Karl said.
Martin is one of three Nuggets big men on the mend. Forward Nene remains sidelined because of a sprained left knee and backup center Francisco Elson continues to be bothered by plantar fasciitis in his left foot.
MILLER'S FAREWELL: Three weeks after announcing he will retire after 18 NBA seasons, Pacers guard Reggie Miller will make his final Denver regular-season appearance tonight.
"I think it's too bad for the league," said Nuggets forward Mark Pope, who played with Miller in Indiana from 1997 to '99. "If I could have one wish for every rookie coming into the league, I wish he could spend a year with Reggie and see how it's supposed to be done because he really is great."
Miller, 39, has made more three-pointers (2,508) than any other player in NBA history, but he still is in search of his first championship. The Pacers are contending for one of the final Eastern Conference playoff spots.
"I would totally feel like I'm disrespecting Reggie if I didn't get him to the playoffs," O'Neal said.
"I would feel like I've disrespected everything he's done in his career, knowing that this is his last year. We've got to make sure we get there."
P-DAY? The Nuggets hope to sign Wesley Person to a contract today once the veteran shooting guard clears waivers.
Person, who was released by the Miami Heat on Tuesday, would give the Nuggets the outside shooting threat they have been missing all season.
"It's going to space up the court," Karl said. "I think (point guard) Andre (Miller) will have a little more room to play and operate.
"I think our post-ups will be a little freer.
LUE SUSPENDED: Atlanta Hawks guard Tyronn Lue was suspended for one game for throwing punches at the midsection of Denver forward Eduardo Najera on Tuesday.
Lue served his suspension when Atlanta played at the Utah Jazz on Wednesday.
