Not that it matters, but actually Moses Malone was picked #5 in the ABA Dispersal Draft...into the NBA. Those are all ABA draft numbers you have.
The ABA Dispersal Draft consisted of only 12 players but fair enough

He wasn't drafted in the top five...

By the time the NBA-ABA merged, and that dispersal draft occured, every NBA team was salivating at the prospects of picking up either Artis Gilmore or Moses Malone, so he was hardly a rookie by that time. Malone was also the very first player to play pro ball right out of high school, he was a skinny kid who played for the Utah Stars, so he was groundbreaking as well.

Ugh...I only recall all this because I'm old as dirt.

    Marion was draft #9

This turned into a stupid thread.

How many current teams have a top 5 pick on them.

99 percent of teams have a top 5 pick on them, and 99 percent of championship teams have a top 5 picks on them.

If those two numbers are the same, then there is no correlation.

If the point is that you need to draft in the top 5 to win a championship, you are may be aiming in the right direction but you are missing. You don't have to draft a top 5 pick to have a top 5 pick on your team. A more revealing study would show how many of those championship teams with a top 5 pick on them actually drafted that player. I don't have the time or energy to look this up, so I'll leave that to someone who reads this post.

99% of teams have a top five pick player on their roster? I've got a feeling the stat-masters are going to come after you on that one.

What other team does not have a top 5 pick on them?

Post was meant in jest. I've got no idea what other teams don't have one.

Not sure what the answer to this one is, but I do know that we finished better than 90% of the league the last two years without one.

Since the subject was gingerly broached...

99% of teams would equate to 29.7 teams which is obviously an impossibility. If he intended to mean all but one team has a top 5 pick, 96.7% would have been the percentage.

99% of past NBA champions would be 63.36 out of 64 teams. I would be interested to know how many NBA championship teams have not had a top 5 pick on their roster.

As to whether or not there is more than one team without a top 5 pick currently, I do not know.

Technically, we finished last season with one (Evan Turner, who was drafted #2 overall in 2010). He didn't really contribute positively to the team's performance, however.

Guess I tried to erase that one from my mind

Marion is not a top 5 anymore so what's the big deal. He's a hustle ballplayer and that's what I care about. He's another David West and when Roy goes through his **** that's another pacer who will not be inclined to put up with it.

I was being slightly sarcastic, but the Pacers shouldn't have let Shawn leave Vincennes...

Just looked. Of all 2013-2014 NBA rosters, only one team went without a top 5 pick and that was Denver. They had two #6 picks and three other top 10s. Had it not been for the Evan Turner trade, the Pacers would have been in pretty rare territory with the roster make up. PG and Bynum (#10s) would have been the highest picks on the team.

Boston would have to be one of the worst rosters draft pick wise in the NBA. Outside of Jeff Green, they had no other player picked higher than #11 with many being undrafted.

Whether a team has a top 5 pick keeps getting brought up. I suppose it's relevant. But once again...it's whether that top 5 pick is one of their better players. The history is clear on this.

I believe there are three teams without a top-5 pick on the roster.

    Denver: Danilo Galinari (6th)
    Detroit: Greg Monroe (7th)
    Indiana: Paul George (10th)

I think there's a chance we get Marion if Ray Allen and someone else signs with the Cavs first. Don't know how the trade will affect things, but I'm guessing that's why Marion hasn't signed yet.
