True, I doubt the Spurs would ever take advantage of a star getting hurt and getting a top pick out of it. Just not like the Spurs to get a good draft pick in a lost year.

Do you think Tim Duncan alone would have gotten them those championships? They have been smart and not panicked and drafted well, I agree where having a higher pick allows u a chance to draft before other teams, but it also takes some luck and smart scouting. LIke OKC that you talked about Portland drafts Durant and they take Oden and their entire franchise is changed. I guess I'm just like to see the franchise try and compete than tank to try and get a lower draft pick.

Why does winning games next year cripple us for the future?
Because it's pointless... With Scola and West soon to be gone (and their games on the wrong side of 30). Hibbert's value tanked and questionable consistency issues, Lance gone, PG temporarily gone, etc. it is a throwaway year. Why work hard to lose traction in next year's draft?

Higher draft picks not only increase the pool of players you are drafting from but they are also assets that you can trade for known commodities.

Good move for us. He might be on the downside, but he has gas in the tank.

I totally agree with that, I just don't see Marion adding many wins to this roster imo, too many changes happened this off season for my expectation this team even with marion will be around 10th in the east. The only way to get an even higher draft pick would be to trade west, hill and Hibbert for prospects.

If this happens I'll be interested in the terms of the deal. It has to be for only 1 year doesn't it? Does this put us over the L.T.? I'm not sure how much room we have after signing Miles.

It could be more about building up a team that might attract free agents rather than trying to hit the the lottery.

What happens when we sneak into the playoffs as the 8 seed and get a bad draft pick for no reason?
I understand that the NBA is reworking the draft system and a bad record does not necessarily translate into a high draft pick. The 76ers are fighting this new draft system because they would have expected to have a very high pick, given they expect to have a poor record this year. Does anyone have more info on how this new draft system would work?

because you're maybe trading 2 picks in the draft for some more ticket sales and the ability to tout the team as a bunch of scrappers playing for their leader? Do you guys not remember how the community rallied aorund that brawl team? Some of the games that year were crazy loud. They're hoping to accomplish the same sort of impact this year IMO and to do that you need to be in the playoffs.

People complaining about dropping from the late lottery to mid-first really need to check up on the 2015 draft prospects. I don't think you can argue against bringing in someone who could help us rediscover a defensive identity, and who will likely stay to play with PG if this years team gels, in order to draft one perennial roleplayer over another. The "steals" in this draft probably won't make all-star teams, and the known gems will be gone by 10.

If you can come up with a feasible way to get this team some assets and a top 5 pick next year, I'm all ears. But it ain't happening. So for me trading the 15th pick for the 18th is a fine decision if it means playoff games.

I love Marion. Had we been competing this would be great.

That being said, the only thing this would do is take away important development minutes from Solomon Hill. Marion won't be with us next year, this makes zero sense.

    Easy answer.

If Marion does sign with the Pacers for a single season and we are talking about making the Playoffs......then it will be GH/Miles/Solo/West/Hibbert/Watson/Stuckey/Marion/Mahinmi lineup. That's not a bad 9 man rotation......and IMHO....good enough to REALLY compete for a Playoff spot.

To be clear, I don't expect to win a NBA Championship with this lineup. But if we can make the 1st round of the Playoffs while getting Solo NBA Ready to contribute sooner rather than later.....then I can accept that and I expect that this is something that Bird and the Simon's are willing to accept. I think that making the Playoffs....even if it means a hard fought but futile attempt at making it past the 1st round after losing PG13 to a freak accident.....should be the goal for this season. Anything beyond that is gravy. Winning and competing will help solidify the fan base as much as we can while waiting for the return of PG13.

BTW, I'm fine with trading West and hopefully getting some assets in return......even if it means not making the Playoffs.....just to develop for the future. However, I am not convinced that Bird would not continue to push to compete at a high level while pushing to win games and putting out a good product to the fans.

There will be minutes for Solo....he'd just take ETs minutes from last season as the Backup SF.

EDIT - I thought that we'd have to waive Scola to make a better offer....but based off of my calculations....if we simply let Sloan go ( who becomes guaranteed on August 15th which is 3 days from now ).....we'd be at $73.87 mil with 14 Players. The Pacers could offer him a contract around $3+ mil before hitting the Luxury Tax ceiling.

It's August so we don't know how this draft will shape up.

It's not asinine, it's just logic. A higher pick equals a bigger talent pool to choose from, and thus a higher chance to draft a great player. You don't win championships with your best players being drafted at 10 and 17. It just doesn't happen.
Kobe Bryant was drafted at #13 which makes him a pretty bad example of what you're trying to say.

I agree that a higher pick equals a bigger talent pool but the difference between #12 and #15 is rarely that big.

I honestly think without signing Marion we win 30 games or so. I think that much of a dropoff is not only possible, but likely.
In general, the reaction to this signing depends on how each one of us feels about the team's core without PG.

The people who still feel good about a Hill/Hibbert/West core and think that the team should give it another shot are glad about this signing.

The people who don't feel good about the above core and want us to retool don't like the signing and would prefer us to tank this season.

The Spurs went 20-62 in the season before drafting Duncan. Do you really think that this team even without PG can go that low without losing blatantly on purpose?

Our talent level is far too good for 20 wins and that eliminates us from the contention of the #1 pick.

As Herm would say, You play to win the games!!!

We should have tanked in 2011. That Bulls series did nothing for our future. It just gave us a worse pick. Green
