Wow. What a talent. Sadly, this is a similar route that other comedians have taken.

    Nanu-nanu.

RIP to one of the funniest ad lib guys ever. Some of the most creative artists are also many times some of the most neurotic, tortured souls. Seems to go with the territory sometimes.

"Robin Williams passed away this morning," rep Mara Buxbaum said in a statement tonight. "He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time."

Absolutely shocking. Many times, it is the people who are overtly and publicly "up" who are also the most "down" privately. I've seen it a number of times with people I've met. Crying on the inside taken to an extreme. He progressed though so many levels of showing his talents since the days of Mork. Really became such a well rounded actor. What a shame.

There was a death hoax about him last week actually but this unfortunately is legit.

He was in rehab last month so I shouldn't have been surprised but I was.

Tragic news. Some big name actors have died recently - James Gandolfini, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and now Robin Williams.

He apparently suffered from some severe depression pretty much his entire life.

I'm not sure there is anyone who could make me laugh like Robin Williams.

    Tragic. RIP.

"Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed, life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in threatening world. Doctor says, 'Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town. Go see him. That should pick you up.' Man bursts into tears.'But doctor' He says, 'I am Pagliacci.'"

I'm reading that he had financial troubles, hence his return to TV last season (show got canceled). He was selling a ranch he owned because he said he couldn't afford it and was downsizing. He said he'd returned to TV because it was a better paying option than going on the road with stand-up or taking roles in smaller movies (because many smaller movies can't get distribution).

He was paying alimony to two ex-wives apparently but I'm not sure that would entirely explain where his money went.

It's hard to imagine someone like Robin Williams having financial issues because-
    A: His body of work
B: The ability (you'd think) to carve out work about any time he'd want as an A-list celebrity (HBO Special for example, PPV, small (or large) stand-up tour, Concert DVD, movie role(s), etc.)

Of course, OTOH, bad investments... spending lavishly during the best of times and establishing a non-sustainable lifestyle... etc... can certainly contribute to a financial downfall. And of course nobody said he was penniless so his financial issue probably looks far different than what the rest of us might consider an issue.

Well Bball, I'd also point out that with really bad depression Williams may have thought no one wanted to give him work so who knows how he even went looking for it. It's a horrible illness. This man probably died thinking he was useless, and look at the happiness he has given so many....sad.

It makes you wonder how that cancellation of his TV series after only one season affected him in context.

With financial pressures weighing, the insider said that the cancellation of The Crazy Ones in May sent him spiraling.

“Robin slipped into a deep depression,” the source said. “He felt embarrassed and humiliated that the show had been a failure. It was very hard for Robin to accept. Here he was in his sixties, and forced to take a role on television for the money. It’s just not where he thought he would be at this point in his life.”
