Default 2014 Preseason Thread: Back to Football

I thought since the offseason is officially over, we could use a new thread to discuss Colts/NFL preseason news. It should be a lot of fun, as there are several battles going on in camp right now.

I do have a question I've been thinking about since Friday. Should Robert Mathis play at all in the preseason? As we saw Friday night, one faithful play can change an entire season. I'm just curious what Robert can gain by playing at all in the preseason? I would think any progress and rhythm he would gain by playing would be gone after sitting out until week 5. He's a pro's pro and I think he'll be as ready as he possibly can be by week 5. We can use the time to the supporting cast to try to replace him for the first month.

It has crossed my mind but its best he gets reps in you don't want him to be rusty coming back from his suspension.

Reggie Wayne wonít play in preseason opener

Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne says heís feeling great in his return from a torn ACL, but the team isnít ready to turn him loose in a game just yet.

Coach Chuck Pagano said Monday that Wayne will not play in the Coltsí preseason opener against the Jets on Thursday. Pagano added that Wayne will face some live competition before the start of the regular season, however.

ď[Wayne's] going to see some action before September 7 [against Denver], what that is, is TBA,Ē Pagano said, via ESPN.com.

Waiting a bit to play Wayne in a preseason game has two advantages. Wayne has more time to work in practice and heíll play in a game when the offensive starters should see more than a handful of snaps. Wayneís absence could open the door for Hakeem Nicks to improve offensive coordinator Pep Hamiltonís assessment of his work since joining the team this offseason. Nicks didnít practice on Monday in what Kevin Bowen of the teamís website indicated was a rest day, however.

FYI tonight is the first Colts preseason game vs the Jets on WNDY(for the local fans)

Course if you have NFLN they will replay it later.

I am so excited for this season. Luck will be better than last especially with all the weapons we have now. Even though our starters will play 1 series, 2 max I am still really excited. One person who I am excited for and know he will get first team reps tonight and second team reps is Donte Moncrief. He has shined throughout camp and seeing him in person made me believe the hype. I'm 110% behind this kid and think he could make a significant impact this season and once Reggie retires he will be up to the opportunity. Wouldn't surprise me if Moncrief starts at some point this season over Nicks

If you've been watching the Colts long enough, you'll know that teams make 99% of their field goals against us, regardless of distance.

Scobee is the worst. I swear he could hit from 70 against us. Who could also forget the Bironas 60 yarder.

I really enjoyed the first half. It wasn't bad for a preseason game. The second half will probably be a snooze fest though.

True but I was getting bad playoff flashbacks with that one.

So far both teams have combined to have more bad snaps than touchdowns.

This feels like a stupid question, but is there overtime in a preseason game? Just seems like it would be an unnecessary opportunity for someone to get hurt, not that Colt players even need opportunities.

There used to be. I thought I read that the competition committee eliminated it, but I'm not sure. I agree there shouldn't be, it's pointless.
