Larry Bird doubles CJ Miles last contract in both years and salary. But wont' give lance a 2-3 year deal....
And considering Lance was Birds boy, gives you an indication how much they actually wanted him back

    *sigh*

No one is going to change anyone's mind. I guess it is easier to decide Larry Bird is a total idiot who doesn't know what Lance is capable of.

I choose to believe that the flexibility was all in the agent's mind and that Larry actually meant what he said when he kept repeating he had a number and he wouldn't go over it.

As a society we seem to have gotten so used to people lying that when they say something and it turns out that way we think it is because they were lying and then screwed up so they couldn't do anything but what they said they were going to do.
    It's not that at all.

I don't get why we offer 44 million, he winds up signing for 27 million, and we wind up with a gaping hole in the back court.

He didn't get "big money". We apparently wanted to pay him more guaranteed. I thought if they let him go, it was a sign he was a huge problem within the team. But it turned out to be over 1.4 million a year, with less overall commitment from the the organization. I'm just puzzled by that thinking. Either he has character problems or he doesn't. And if he does, it doesn't make sense to invest more in him than we have to. We were willing to go 44 but not 27? Don't get it.

You can't tell me bringing in Damjan Rudez or keeping Luis Scola is worth that downgrade in overall talent. Scola is likely here 1 more season and didn't even play very well for us last year.

Well... for our sake, I hope the Pacers don't regret their decision.

I doubt this, either he cleans up his act a bit and does get a big contract in 2 or 3 years. Or he doesn't clean up his act and he will still be able to get the 8.8 million we were offering.

You really think if he has another 2 years of not cleaning up his act that he still gets nearly $9M? You don't think by then teams will look at it as something he might not mature out of, particularly if Charlotte cuts him?

Now, I'm on the "I think he'll make it" side, but it isn't like he's risking nothing.

This whole negotiation was a charade. The pacers gave Lance an offer he didn't want because they didn't want Lance. Roy doesn't sound unhappy Lance is gone in his tweet. Herb didn't seem willing to negotiate the contract in his recent remarks. It's adding up.

There is always somebody who thinks they can change these guys. How do you think Stephen Jackson kept finding work. And with the cap going up 8.8 million is less of a risk in 2 or 3 years.

OK, not sure where that comes in with my argument. The total number was due to the uncertainty, the length was because they were confident they'd come out on the right side of it. Betting they are right but giving Lance a shorter contract would be betting against themselves because it would end up costing them a lot later.
This just all goes back to the original comment. Aka, there are those saying the Pacers not matching proves Lance was a bigger disruption than we thought when the money was so minimal, but the other side to that is that we did offer him a longer deal and his not wanting to stay could be an indication that other factors are more F'd up than we though. or at least I think that's what it was, getting hard to remember!

How much more will Jordan brand pay than And1?
It will be interesting to see if Lance gets an endorsement deal with the Jordan brand now that he's playing in Charlotte. So he could stand to make more money that way, especially if he plays up to his potential. He'll definitely have an opportunity to get up more shots because the Hornets lack a guy that can get to the basket and score in transition like Lance.

I know we've been talking about how this effects the Pacers but this is a great signing for the Hornets. Michael Jordan's last 2 offseasons have been pretty good. I think that Kemba Walker, Lance Stephenson, Michael-Kidd Gilchrist, Al Jefferson, and Cody Zeller could be a really good starting 5. They made the playoffs last year with less talent so I think they will take another step forward this year.

This sucks for the Pacers but if nothing else happens, PG, Hill, and Hibbert should have better seasons than they had last year. Lance is good but he's a ball-stopper sometimes on offense and he's not very good at feeding the ball into the post. CJ Miles is a bigger threat from the 3-point line and he's more comfortable with being a roleplayer/5th option on offense than Lance would ever be here.

Larry is not coming back, he didn't have a meeting with Orlando for not reason, yeah he is coming back to the NBA but not to the Pacers, the notion that he is a taking a year off and then come back is absurd.

Or that he is supremely confident he can get a major payday in 3 years instead of 5. It isn't that complicated.

Who is saying it's a definite win? The most I hear people saying is that there's some positives in it.
Addition by substraction is what people seem to be excited about rightnow. I really don't get it. To me this was an absolute loss we suffered today. I'm quite curious as to what motivation he had for taking this Charlotte deal. Also they did make the playoffs last season and do have a few young players that should be atleast a bit better the coming years so people talking about Lance not seeying the postseason anymore might very well be dissappointed.

So, how the hell are we going to face intense ball pressure now? Ugh...

Then why did we offer him more money over more years?

I never thought he was a serious locker room problem. And it was because the Pacers actions with him never indicated that, and this is no different.

They gave him tons of minutes last year.

They never fined him or suspended him for anything.

They made him more of a focal point as the season went on.

They offer him a 5 year deal when apparently they could've had him on a shorter deal.

I think we all better hope he was the problem, because if not, the problem is still in that locker room and we better remove it before it costs us Paul George. JMO

The only offer they gave him was exactly what he didn't want. That tells you they didn't want him back. And when a guy is that talented and a team doesn't want him back. It says hes a problem.
