Default Poll: Pacers and midseason trade

Let's try a poll on this trading deadline...
Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

None of those 3 really fit my feelings. I'm slightly disappointed we didn't make a trade, but I understand why they wouldn't this time.

I'm concerned about the message "Donnie Do-Nothing" just sent to the team during Reggie's last season. Many times in the past I've been okay with doing nothing at the deadline.

Right now, I'm 50%-50% between whether I think this team can make the second round or will have a total collapse.

I'll be upset if it is revealed that we turned down a trade that would have not only helped this year but for years to come merely because we were gun shy or had to give up Edwards as a filler.

They should have traded Bender for anyone who can contribute to the team

For those that are disappointed, I think Hicks hits the home run on this one.

It's pretty obvious that the Pacers were trying to get something done. But they weren't willing to give up anything of value to accomplish the minor tinkering they had in mind.

If you can't make the deal you want, then you don't make the deal. Despite our record, in the long haul, most teams are trying to catch us, not the other way around.

    We've morgaged enough for Reggie.
    Not sure I agree...

It seems to me we keep mortgaging a chance to win it all in the present in order to still have a contender in the future.

Maybe that's the right answer for a small-market team, but there are certainly days I don't like it.

I can never answer these type questions, because I don't know what was available. but i trust DW and LB to make the right decisions, and if they say a good trade was not presented, then I'll buy that

What's the alternative? LB and DW admitting to a mistake? The Devil would have a snowball fight when that happens.

Do you think Joe D. or Billy King are just waiting to hear what's presented?

I don't think Sacramento called up Billy King and said, "Hey, we're looking to get rid of Webber and the guys we really want are Thomas, Skinner, and what's-his-face." On the other hand, what Billy King offered was a sweet enough deal to convince Sacramento to pull the trigger. I don't want Webber, of course. I just want to see these guys succeed at making the team better.

I'm not even saying the move has to be big and bold, but I get the feeling DW and Bird are sitting on thier hands, more worried about the downside of any moves and only making safe moves, instead of actively trying to make the team better.

That's a good point. It feels like they just wait for somone to make an offer, rather than try to start one of their own.

I've stated in other threads I believe sometimes you should make trades for the sake of trades. You don't always have to look to get the missing piece of the puzzle for the starting lineup. Sometimes you just trade one bench player for another in hopes of getting something different off the bench. A little spark. Maybe some more upside. Maybe you are just trying to bring something a little different to the table. Keep the team from getting stale. Keep the fans energized. Maybe you are making a point to the team about not getting complacent... or work ethic... (Maybe the guy you bring in has a terrific work ethic you hope rubs off.... or maybe the guy you trade was to send a signal to the team to not rest on its laurels because if you'll trade him then nobody might be safe)

Of course when you have bloated contracts on the bench it does make that somewhat harder.

But other teams find ways to get things done.

Which all this brings me to a pet peeve... When I hear people talking of the Pacers doing this or that for salary flexibility I'd laugh if it didn't make me so angry. What good is salary flexibility if you only use to re-sign players like Bender to a ridiculous extension? Having the ability to overpay our bench, and then doing it, and painting ourselves into a corner isn't much excuse for salary flexibility type moves.

    BTW... I voted #3.

Well, I've made myself wonder about something. Just where do the Pacers stand in the cost of their bench as opposed to other teams? Is this info out there anywhere? I'd be curious about the raw numbers comparison as well as a percentage comparison to see what other teams pay their starters vs bench in percentages (what percentage of the total salary goes to the starters and what goes to the bench and then see how we stack up against other teams).

Croshere, Bender and Pollard are #2, #3 and #5 on the payroll, with O'Neal and Artest at 1 and 4.

While it doesn't tell you how they compare to other teams, it does tell you where the money's going.

My pet peeve aside, it wouldn't have broken my heart to see the Pacers work a salary dump in order to have some flexibility this summer. But before I'd get too carried away with it I'd remain cautious that we somehow don't take advantage of it when summer arrives.

But then my pet peeve is more about people getting all excited over a salary dump possibility and immediately start working on their "Tim Duncan in a Pacer uni" avatars for summer

At least you only have one of them to deal with.
