Cavs acquire Welsch for '07 first-round pick

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers addressed their need for an outside shooter Thursday by acquiring guard Jiri Welsch from the Boston Celtics for a 2007 first-round draft pick.

    Welsch
ESPN Insider Chad Ford reports the Cavs acquired Welsch using a $1.5 million trade exception.

Welsch, who started for Boston earlier this season, should help the Cavaliers improve their 3-point shooting. The club is 27th out of 30 teams in the NBA on 3-pointers. Welsch has made 32 of 99 3-point attempts this season.

Welsch, 25, was dropped from the Celtics' starting lineup last month when the team changed its rotation. He's likely to come off the bench for the Cavaliers, whose reserves have scored just 14 points in Cleveland's last two games.

The No. 16 overall pick in the 2002 draft by Philadelphia, Welsch also has played for Golden State and Dallas.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I don't know if Jiri is all that good, but he may fit in Cleveland if all he has to do is shoot.
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

32% from 3 and thats what they got him for? I hope he shoots better in Cleveland.

I think it's a good move by Cleveland. There first rounders won't be very valuable anyway the coming years as their record will most likely keep improving and Jiri won't be having a zillion other 3point shooters next to him, he actually has some inside presence on his new team in Ilgauskas and Gooden, while Lebron can rebound well too, so he will be getting better looks and be playing on a team that can stretch the defence better than the Celtics can IMO.

It's not a spectacular move, but I see it as effective/efficient for the Cavs.

I don't know if Jiri's numbers will improve or not, but he's an excellent fit in Cleveland where he can stretch the defense for LeBron and keep teams from doubling Z and Gooden.

Jiri will certainly provide plenty of outside shooting for the Cavs. Outside making, however..............
But as all Reggie Miller fans know... you just have to be a "threat" to make it from out there.

Besises, 32% shooting from 3-pt range means you get 96 points on 100 shots. That's about average; its not like he's truly awful from out there and his shot has good form/ arc to it. There are plenty of other guys that shoot knuckleballs and linedrives (and that's not excluded just to Pacers' players) at a higher % so this just leaves me scratching my head, anyway.

I still think Jiri can develop into a younger, even-worse-defensively version of Peja. Even if Don Nelson isn't allowed to coach him anymore...

Welsch is a good player. He had decent numbers starting alongside Pierce last season, but just got caught in a numbers crunch this year. And playing with LeBron is only going to make him better.

    Welsch IS a good shooter.

However, sometimes shooters just dont mix with a new team, ie Brent Barry.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

I remember not too long ago people were hoping there was a way for us to get him thrown into a deal for Pierce.
I've always thought he was skilled. I don't like seeing the Cavs getting ANY better.

Lessee.....Philly and the Cavs have improved and if rumors bear out and DM ends up in Miami......we'll be WAY down the list this year.

I guess I remember him being more than that. He's a decent slasher and can also play some PG, although he won't have to do that in Cleveland. And once again, he's playing with LeBron. That makes such a big difference.
