The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

    I am officially not getting Season Tickets next year

    First of all, I haven't been on here much as of late. Reggie's retirement, while I knew it was coming, really took the air out of me, and just seemed to be the final nail in the coffin of this horrible season.

    To put it plainly, I've dreaded going to games lately. I played the good soldier and cheered like it was the playoffs post-11/19. I was patient with the team during the ups and downs, and was glad we reached my goals of being .500 when JO came back (12-12), and over .500 when Jack came back (20-19). Then, to put it succinctly, everything seemed to go to hell in a handbasket. Logically, I knew that we were losing because Tinsley was out, and I needed to wait until after the break to judge the team on it's merits, but emotionally I was too far spent to feel better about it.

    This week's been better, but I've been too busy with work to be on the board. Yesterday I had a nightmare day with a client, and was too exhausted to go to the game last night. I caught the tail end on tv, with Reggie hitting all the FT's, and thought it would have been nice to see, but talking to my sister, we agreed we'd already seen Reg hit for 30+ twice this year, so it was no great loss.

    Tonight, Pacers Sports and Entertainment did their best to push me out the door, and they succeeded.

    So, I get home from another nightmare day with the same client, and in the mail is a big folder from the Pacers. I think "well, they're finally hitting us up for playoff money", though I did note that that it was a big folder like they did for season tickets this year, not just a regular envelope like in years past.

    I'd had a bad enough week as it was, and resolved not to look at it. But tonight, it was just sitting there, and against my better instincts, a little voice in my head said, "what the hell."

    Inside it begins with a letter, which starts with the obligatory "Yeah, it's been tough this year, but thanks for your support". Then it gets interesting.

    For those who don't know, this is how it usually works. In February, they send you a bill for the entire playoffs. Since, hypothetically, the Pacers could play 16 home games, if they had homecourt through out the playoffs, every series went 7 games, up to and including the Finals. So yeah, it's a bit of a scam. Even in 2000 we only played 12. So, they end up sitting on a grand or two of your money over the summer, collecting a nice bit of interest when you think about how many season ticket holders there are, then apply that leftover money towards next year's season.

    As I said, that's a nice setup. But they just had to go and screw with it.

    Now, they want you to reup for next season by March 15th. The inclosed invoice has the full playoff run and next year's season on it. Since they don't expect everyone to come up with so much money so quickly, they divide the amount into 3 installments, payable March 15th, May 15th, and July 15th. Any playoff money left over would then apply towards the July payment.

    So, in affect, they want your money sooner. Instead of paying for next year's season in August, per usual, they want it asap. Interesting. Seems kind of strange they'd be doing this now, but whatever. I'm thinking, well, the invoice states that you can just reup for the playoffs, so I'm thinking I'd do that, and if we really do want tickets, we'll just reup for those later.

    Here's the kicker, though. The letter states that "Since we are asking for a commitment from you, we offer a commitment in return..." Yada yada. To be brief, they're increasing ticket prices next year, and if you reup for next season now, you won't pay the increase. Again, I'm thinking, "Ooo, what I can get my tickets at $30 as opposed to $32? No thanks, I'll just wait and decide later on what I want to do."

    So, I start thumbing through the packet. After the letter and invoice, there's a picture of Reggie from his rookie year, thanking him for his service. There's a sheet talking about account access on Pacers.com, which I've seen about 20 times. Then there's two pricing charts. One for if you reup before March 15th. One after.

    I think you know where I'm going here. My tickets go from $30 to $48, per game.



    That did it, right there. After everything that's happened this year, after all the **** we've all put up with, there is a ticket price increase coming up, and in some cases (like mine) it's massive.

    Now, to be fair, it could be said we had this coming. When Conseco first opened, we sat in 225, row 15. After a couple years, we moved down to row 11, which was the first row of the $32 seats. Last year, they changed things up, where they not only decreased those seats from $32 to $30, but they made the whole of 226 $30 as well. So, we jumped at the chance to sit in the front row, and have greatly enjoyed our seats. Even with the ****ty year, at least I've got a nice view of the Pacemates.

    But of course, it was too good to be true. Next year, the first two rows are going back to the $45 range, which is of course being increased to $48. We can't even move back to our old seats, because the $48 range has been increased in that section to the first half. :shakehead

    So, that's it. I called my sister to confirm with her before I posted, and she was ready to call it quits when I told her they wanted to charge us for next season, before I even got to the price increase. She said something to the effect of "You can tell them to go **** themselves."

    When I look beyond the two of us, who granted were tetering on the brink of not coming back, this still looks like an unbelievably stupid move by PS&E. Taking a cursory look at the new price chart, most everyone's seats are going up by some amount, be it $5 or $100 per (the later being courtside seats, of course.) I was already thinking that the Pacers were going to see a major decline in ticket sales next year, be it Reggie retiring, Ron being an ***, David Stern being a bigger ***, it's more fun to stay at home and watch the smokin' Stacey Paetz, etc. But to pull something like this, on top of all that, it just makes no damn sense to me, whatsoever.

    Of course, I should note something. The letter I've described, it was not signed by Donnie, as has always been the case, but Larry Bird. Welcome to the new regime boys and girls.

    And for those who care, we are gonna get playoff tickets. As much as I don't want to give one more red cent, I'm not missing Reggie's last game.

    But hey, there's good news. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they win the title next year. Murphy's law and all. But we got tickets this year because we thought this was "the year." We're not falling for that again.

    That's sad to hear, Kegboy. Having sat in them once (thanks again for that), those really are good seats, especially at that price, and that's a hell of an increase (over 50%). Sorry to hear your Pacer spirit is weak right now. This season has kinda sucked, hasn't it?

      s'ok, I'll be MORE than happy to fill those seats for 1-2 games a year....

      It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

        Well, now that we're finally to the break, I'm hopeful for the rest of the season.

        We've had a good run. 7 years. The last year at MSA, 2000 was just about perfect the whole year, we were members of the distinct minority who actually liked Isiah, etc. Going out with Reggie seems like a good thing to do. If Bender had lived up to my expectations this year, maybe it'd be different, but again, Murphy's law and all, I'm sure he'll be an All Star next year.

            Couldn't be much worse than the idiot-crew in section 222.....

            One guy talking on his cell all game, another guy that REALLY needed to read a rulebook, and one guy that kept calling Brewer a "worthless bum"......

            I miss the lady in section 201 that kept calling for "intentional fouls" whenever a player was fouled deliberately.....

            It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

              Oh, we get stuff like that and worse just about every damn game. You know, it'd be alot more fun if we just had the section to ourselves. That's why we like the front row so much, at least we don't have anyone in front of us.

                OK... It wasn't me... I swear... I heard the idiots as well. The only game they've been there for (when I've been there) was the Piston game.

                If it is the guy I am thinking of that you say needs to read a rule book... He'd have to learn to read first!

                  I've been there.

                  When the Pacers traded Brad Miller away I did not renew my tickets. I wasn't p!ssed because of what I thought was a God awfull basketball decision (because no matter how you slice it, it was) but I lived through bad decsions before. I was devastated because I thought the club had decided that even though they thought Brad Miller was that good they just were not going to pay him. To me that was an unfogivable mistake. If they aren't willing to dole out the Bucks for a player to take them to the top then I felt like I d@mn well wasn't going to spend my money on them just to watch them compete every year knowing that they would not ever do anything to take the next big step.

                  I talked to my ticket rep on the phone & told him I was not re upping for the season & I even told him that I felt betrayed for the first time by the Simons. Then I read in interview with Herb Simon explaining that he would gladly pay the luxuary tax if he thought it meant winning a title but that he was told that we only had one player worth big $$$.

                  I was still p!ssed at Walsh & I still am for that but at least I felt like the Simons were on board with trying to win, they were just going with what was told them by the guy they trust.

                  Needless to say I had to crawl back on my knees to get my tickets back. My ticket rep. even save my seats for me but not without getting in the "I knew you would be back" dig.

                  I guess what I'm trying to say is I understand.

                  Games are not cheap by any means.

                  I tried to get this from your sister the other day & she did reply but I kind of wonder if you could narrow it down for me.

                  I know your disgusted with the entire season, as we all are. But would you say there is one reason more than any other that is making you feel the way you do about next season? Other than ticket price increase, cause I know you guys were contemplating not re-upping before we all knew this.

                  Are either of you guys upset at all that management seems to have written off the season? We all did pay tickets for this season & I wonder if others ever feel a little cheated because we are just going to wait till next year?

                  BTW, I was never a Thomas fan nor was I a Thomas basher. I was fairly neutral to him but I think he had a lot of crap thrown his way that he did not deserve. He was never given an easy group of players to work with & I think he was treated poorly by Bird when he came here. Which I find funny in a way because to me thats about the only thing Bird has done since he's been here. Well other than scout European games & highschool basketball games.

                    I moved down to the second row of the balcony this season, and I love the tickets. But if they go from $20 (I'm in the corner) to $xx, I may blow a gasket, too.

                    Tina's getting tired of paying for regular season games we don't use. I keep them for the playoff tickets, and to have a good "priority number" if we ever get to move back to Indy, but that's an absurd price increase.


                    If anything, they should be begging us all to re-up this season, not attempting to extort a large sum of money from us.

                    I wonder if the threat of a lockout is playing into this? That was brutal the way they treated us last time, too. Oh yeah, there was the PR move to give us "simple interest" on our deposits. Blah.

                      Jay brings up a good point about a potential lockout. During the last lockout the team got to live high off the hog with the interest they got off of Kegboy's birthday gift to me. Yes they paid back what games were cancelled. Its always bothered me that they get to keep the interest on my money. But hey, I got that really cool Pacers Rally Band for FREE.

                      And since we're on the subject of the lockout I hope they have one. I hope its really freaking long. The day after they have to cancel the whole season I hope ESPN radio interviews the NHL commishoner (provided there's still a NHL) so he can say what a bunch of idiots there are associated with the NBA.

                      Do I sound bitter? I hope so.

                            The whammy of playoff tickets and half season regular season tickets priced together is a little breathtaking and really gives one reason to pause and say what the flock am I doing.

                            In my case, my two $65 half season seats, which I enjoy and value, are being raised to $70 a ticket next year. Not good, but not totally unexpected. But put that
                            bill for two tickets of $2860 at the retro $65 price and add my playoff ticket package price of $2520 and the bill of $5380 gets way beyond chump change.

                            I opened my envelope yesterday and scanned it seeing that the date to make a decision was March 15. I then put it away, confused that so much money was being asked for now.

                            My first inclination was to not give the Pacers the outrageous playoff package which was priced nearly as high as next year's seats. I could take my chances later buying playoff tickets on the street or by single game ticket order. And only see a few playoff games live. Plus, by March 15, there will be a clearer picture, maybe, about where this team is heading this year and I could change my mind.

                            One thing. I will renew my half season tickets for next year by March 15. I'm in for next season, the good Lord willing.

                            While I haven't reached the outrage stage yet, I share some of your concern. At the very least, you'd think that the P's could have said, "as a reward for putting up with the crap this year, if you purchase the playoff package, your ticket prices will remain the same for next year" - and, not asked for next year's season ticket money until after the playoffs, as has been the previous tradition.

                            What the hell are they thinking?

                              I am very much wondering how long it will take before they are changing this

                              feedback is very important (is my guess) so no doubt lots of people will complain, that gathered with opinions on message boards might lead to a slight reversal fo the proposals
