How do the Spurs keep getting guys to take below market?

Makes you wonder if there's something under the table if it were the Heat, Lakers etc we'd be making these accusations.
Considering this was the max that he could get via extension, I think its neither below market value nor is there anything shady going on. The Spurs didn't even get to have decreasing salaries or add a partially guaranteed year as they normally would for most of their contracts.

The "core" of Spurs' players could have all made more money in the open market but for some reason winning is more important to them

Doubtful. At age 33 who is going to break the bank on him into his late 30's and with 14 NBA seasons already on his tires?

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

Not what we want to think about at the moment, but Marion is still unsigned. Presumably we'll get an injury exception for George, plus we'd be able to promise a ton of minutes to Marion at SF.

Alternatively, sign Beasley, and let him chuck away in a tanking year.

I know that this isn't something that many here want to discuss....but how does an injury exception work?

We're already up against the LT ceiling....what does this allow us to do? Is it like another MLE that allows us to go after another Player? I'd think that it would still count against the Salary Cap and push the Team over the LT.

    EDIT - looked it up:

    http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm

DISABLED PLAYER EXCEPTION -- This exception allows a team which is over the cap to replace a disabled player who will be out for the remainder of that season (it can also be granted in the event of a player's death). This exception is granted by the league, based on an application from the team and a determination by an NBA-designated physician that the player is substantially more likely than not to be unable to play through the following June 15.

If this exception is granted, the team can acquire one player via free agent signing, trade or wavier claim, to replace the disabled player:

The team may sign a free agent for one season only,
for 50% of the disabled player's salary or the amount of the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, whichever is less.
The team may trade for a player in the last season of his contract only (including any option years), who is making no more than 50% plus $100,000 of the disabled player's salary, or the amount of the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception plus $100,000, whichever is less.

The team may claim a player on waivers who is in the last season of his contract only (including any option years), who is making no more than 50% of the disabled player's salary, or the amount of the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, whichever is less.

Teams can apply for this exception from July 1 through January 15, and cannot apply after January 15. Once granted, the exception expires when a player is acquired, when the disabled player is traded or returns to the team, or on March 10 of that season, whichever comes first. This exception is granted on a season-by-season basis -- if the player will also be out the following season, the team needs to apply for this exception again the following season.

This exception can only be granted to the team for which the player was playing when his injury or illness was known, or reasonably should have become known. A team cannot trade for an injured player and subsequently apply for a Disabled Player exception for that player.

If a team's application for a disabled player exception is denied, the team must wait 90 days before submitting another request related to the same player, and then only for a new injury or aggravation of the same injury. Whether the application was approved or denied, the team can apply again (including for the same injury) the following season.

If the disabled player comes back sooner than expected he may be activated immediately, and the replacement player is not affected.

Don't confuse the Disabled Player exception with the salary cap relief teams sometimes receive after losing a player to a career-ending injury or death (see question number 63). The Disabled Player exception allows a team to acquire a replacement player. The salary cap relief removes a contract from the team's books.
From what I can tell, it basically looks like the Pacers can apply for the Disabled Players Exception and get a crack at using an exception that is equivalent to the MLE ( I assume about $5.3 mil ? ). However, I assume that this will push the Pacers into the LT?

If the option is there to use this and it amounts to $5+ mil....I'd offer it to Marion....while promising a Starting SF spot in the lineup. .

This team didn't tank when they had a crappy team and no hope. They sure as **** aren't going to tank now. Too much pride in that locker room and Bird has made it clear over the years that tanking is not a strategy he will pursue.

it is basically an extra MLE we can offer for a year, but yeah, all the potential tax problems still apply, we wouldn't get a waiver from it or something like that. we could apply for one but it really doesn't change what we can (well, will) spend all that much, we're at ~75.8 mil right now, the tax is 76.8.

LT still applies yeah, so whatever we offer Marion shouldn't put us over. Prior to this however, we were out of exceptions and could only offer Marion the minimum. Also, we have a couple of unguaranteed contracts that we can waive to free up a little extra money.

I know that some here won't agree....but honestly, I'd just dump Scola's contract.....clear up roughly $2.9 mil in salary......and put whatever else is left ( maybe $3.9 mil / 1 year deal / guaranteed Starting SF spot ) in an offer to Marion.

I don't look at Scola as anything more than an inefficient use of wasted Capspace since we have Copeland as a replacement. IMHO....we had the luxury of keeping both Scola and Copeland.....now, I don't think that it's one that we should afford....IF the opportunity is there to attempt a run at Marion for a single year at whatever price he can be had without breaking that ceiling.

So yeah, I'm all for dumping him if we can make some improvement in the roster.

we'd also literally HAVE to waive Sloan or Whittington since the roster's full. not right now of course, but Marion (or whoever) wouldn't be some guy we're bringing in as a camp body obviously.

I agree with you that we probably won't tank, but I'll just say that IMO a one year tank triggered by a freak injury is different from the long term tank job that Philly say is putting on.

The only unguaranteed is Scola that makes any sense.

At this point, I'd dump him if it meant that we could throw as much $$$ ( even if it's some $3.5 mil offer ) and a guaranteed Starting SF spot at Marion.

Granger was out for an extended period of time....he was the cornerstone of the Team.....we didn't tank then.

A tank is a tank for whatever the reason. I doubt it matters to Bird the cause....I just don't see him doing it. That's not in his nature.

I agree with this. I don't see the Pacers doing anything other than making a real effort to win as many games as possible. Instead of challenging for home court advantage in the first round, the Pacers will be probably fighting for a 6th seed or so. It does help that the East is not very good, so the chances are decent they make the playoffs. Worst case is the Pacers have a lottery pick of some kind in the next draft, and a chance to pull a Tim Duncan if karma is kind.

It does mean that Solo and Damjan and Miles and Rodney are all going to get plenty of playing time. The offense will change some, I expect. Losing both Paul and Stephenson at the same time takes away the guys the Pacers use to score in iso. So the offense will have to move the ball more to compensate. But Paul and Stephenson were the main ball-stoppers on the team, so the passing should improve.

You've also spent a long time winning back fans and getting butts in seats. This isn't NY or LA - a 15-win season will undo a lot of that.

FWIW I would have a serious meeting with David West about the direction the team was going. If he wants to stay and be a part of this season despite the outlook then great. If he wants to finish his career out on a contender I shake his hand, thank him for his services and look to move him. In two years (when PG may be ready to go), David will be 35.

I agree with cableKC that Scola now doesn't make much sense. An aging PF with diminishing skills doesn't fit with who were are going to be in this transition year.

Play the heck out of Solo Hill, figure out if Stuckey is worth investing in, find a role for CJ Miles and Cope moving forward, and hope Hill/Hibbert can carry the load.

I am not too sure. Attendance won't be what it was last season, but I still think it can be decent.

I blame the bad attendance on the off the court stuff. These guys are good community guys. I believe butts will still be in seats for this upcoming season.

I wonder how Lance feels now. He would have been the primary playmaker here, had he stayed. Now he will be waiting for Kemba Walker to get him the ball, so he can make plays, and of course, wait for Al Jefferson to pass the ball back out (has that ever happened?).
yay, we're going back to the play-offs!

But there was a waiting list to get tickets when he got injured, so a lot of those tickets were sold before anyone knew what was going on.
