The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

Re: Can we overcome the mistakes of Front Office?

Mistakes are part of the risk you take when making bets on future performance. You wouldn't expect a stock broker to hit 100% of his stocks, just like a GM isn't gonna nail every draft pick and trade. A good GM hits a home run every few years, a grand slam once a lifetime, then fills the rest of the roster with as many singles, doubles and triples as he can. No matter what though you're still gonna strike out a few times.

If the "mistakes" are overcome and Pacers win it all, how would the front office moves be mistakes?

Additionally, even the current team is rather strange assembly at spots (and one glaring mistake may really hurt us...)

        1) Paying too much/too long for people who could be replaced with clearly cheaper options.

While I am not going to crap on GHill, Mahinmi, West or Hibbert – all of whom I still believe to be capable bball players, whether they look like it now (Mahinmi & West do) or not (Hill doesn't for sure right now), each of them are paid too much. Hill was never 8M player and that deal looks utter stupidity now, Mahinmi didn’t attract much interest and was probably available at 1-1,5M lower price as well, West was aging by the time of too expensive/extensive new contract. I can give that we probably HAD TO pay for Roy who was peaking right at the time of contract re-newal but even that was a gamble due a history of longevity for truly big players.

        2) Drafting Solomon Hill???

NO draft analyst thought he was 1st-round talent and besides he had NO upside as an upperclassman. So we ended up passing f ex Tim Hardaway Jr. for an “immediate help” who has not looked even remotely capable of actually helping and whose ABSOLUTE ceiling appears to be being a pretty bad back-up 3 for max. 10 minutes a game. Something you could find a dime in dozen for veteran’s minimum. My mouth was agape when that pick was made and nowadays it feels even more ludicrous.

        3) Signing Chris Copeland and THEN trading for Scola???

The only excuse for doing these moves was that we contracted Copeland 1st and traded for Scola some two weeks later. So MAYBE Cope was originally to be a back-up 4 and then we got an opportunity to "upgrade" to Scola at that spot, rolled the dice and made Cope obsolete. And to commit an early-summer 3M MLE to a player who doesn't play is kind of a mistake which separates champions from hopefuls

Now I like both of them as players BUT to have a combination of West-Scola-Copeland in your 5-man frontcourt rotation. Jeez! No wonder Hibbert has been run to the ground this season. God forbid we would have actually ever had an injury to Roy or Mahinmi! None of these 3 can guard the perimeter as a 3 and none of them offers any rim protection as a 5.

Blame Vogel all you want for leaving Cope to rot (and yes, Cope should have been used regularly to 1) add a different type of threat for opponents to account for & 2) to give Scola more rest and off-days. Energetic Scola is a great weapon - a broke-down, slumping Scola is a -20 man), but as a squad our bigs are not a well-balanced group...

Good thing is that stumbling upon Lavoy has given us a serviceable 5th big who can spot-duty as a center (not as a quality center, but not bad as a last alternate). We also may have a wild card of Bynum who could INDEED win us a game or two in post-season. Then maybe we never will see him in uniform again...

        4) Gamble on Evan Turner

Coming to the season the expiring contract of DG33 was the most valuable article we had for shopping around. Management decided to let him come backas a Pacer, but as the play & production was not really what was hoped for, the trade possibility returned to the table. Now, expiring contracts are not as valuable as they used to be and probably there just was no great trade available…

BUT a last-minute panic move to get ET??? Again, I’m not going to sour on him as he probably is giving his best, but what a horrible fit he is... Not only was every report card in unison about Turner being both a drastically individual AND team defender, but he has definitely proven that to be true. Lacking a lateral speed to stay in front of your man and to be constantly incapable or reading rotations, switches etc.

Offensively, he has some skills. After all, while he is a bust for #2 pick, there is some reasons why he was picked so high. But Turner needs ball to be effective and I would rather give that ball to Lance, PG or CJ. Tough to use a guy who need to be #1/#2 option, but only deserves to be #4/#5.

Besides, Turner's questionable shooting range doesn't work well with a clogged lane. That means he is an especially bad matched together with either Hibbert or Lance. And unlike f ex Cope, Turner is not effective in short minutes. He needs 30+ minutes to play his best ball - minutes we can't afford him to have.

So, as a summary, making a last-minute move to get such a mess of a player for a team leader (who could work as a low-volume spot-up shooter and was MUCH better TEAM defender - two important needs for us) was a BAD BAD roll of dice. I don't think Vogel was consulted and that again hurts his authority with the team.

        5) Over-emphasizing Home Court Advantage

Well, HCA is vitally important for play-offs and especially against Heat (we just saw refs in Miami) so great if we manage to finish 1st after all this drama!

But stating that as a goal from Game 1 onwards did clearly wear our players mentally down - you just can't play 82 Game Sevens a year. Besides, we caused ourselves to be "a target" from early on... a game where every opponent brings their A-game in.

3rdly, as "every game matters" we became so unwilling and inflexible to take risks as of testing line-ups or resting players that we just overworked some (Hibbert, Scola, PG, maybe even Hill (did he ever fully recover from that early season back injury?) and never were able to infuse some others (Cope, lately Lavoy, Solo too - not that I think he could give much).

Indeed, I fear that this season will be Roy Hibbert's last as an elite center. As certainly as he has not been one for last two months, he was one for 2013-part of the season. But going forward - yeah, I worry about him being finished!

        6) Larry vs. Vogel -issues

Does anyone else feel that we have a situation where Larry does not really trust Vogel much and makes personnel decisions without asking for coach's output? And Vogel responds to that slight by stubborn, petty attitude of refusing to use players he didn't want to be here?

I REALLY think this is what has happened with Cope particularly. It's like "Jeez, Larry, thanks!!! I'm building a defensive juggernaut and you give me Copeland??? Nice, no money left for other acquisitions either... Eff you Legend, but hell or high water but that guy will NOT see a floor this season!"

This mistrust and hidden internal feuding is another of those small things why we are not on-par with true championship organizations like Spurs and Heat. This wouldn't happen with Pops

As a summary, we became a contender by immensely lucking out with 3 draft picks (Hibbert, PG, Lance). All credit for making those picks + developing them right!

We have made enough of other FO mistakes that our current status as a title contender and a probable Top5-team is not build on strong foundation. Just think about it : Lance leaves, West ages a step more, Roy is irreparably cooked - all 3 things are immensely possible and we are suddenly known as PG + scrubs alias Melo-Knicks without money.

So ENJOY this spring - we may miss this by 2016!
I can't disagree more with you. When we traded for Turner, it was an amazing trade - same with Scola. Our FO can't be blamed for that.

For Mahinmi, go look up how much other back up centers (on non-rookie contracts) earn. You'll appreciate his contract then.

GHill is so under estimated on this forum. He's a good defender and a decent offensive player. He won't be great but he'll be good. From what I recall we're paying him $8 mill which is decent
"So, which one of you guys is going to come in second?" - Larry Bird before the 3 point contest. He won.

Its funny, people wanted to kill Bird for drafting Plumlee, but now want to kill Bird for trading him.

And people are killing Bird for drafting Hill, are you serious? What rookies are making a huge impact that were on the board when we drafted? Bird also "reached" for Miles and he is now starting at Center for a potential playoff team.

Some people are just looking for reasons to complain.

Re: Can we overcome the mistakes of Front Office?

Mostly people are just impatient. They want immediate results, and all the time. If someone experiences a month-slump, they want their contract released or traded. If someone makes a draft pick, fire them. Then when said draft pick flourishes, praise them. Then when said player goes through month-long slump, fire the GM and trade the player. Then when said player rebounds and starts playing well, they say lock up player for the long-term and recommend GM for award.

            Just no patience at all.

Like this last few months. Half this board is ready to jump off a cliff. Not even acknowledging the fact that this team is relatively healthy, has good players, good coaches, a good GM, has proven this year even of playing at an extremely high level and is about to finish with the #1 seed even after a bad slump. And appear to be possibly fixing the slump, as evidenced by a good win over a very good OKC team just yesterday, and yet there are people complaining about our players, coaches, nailing our GM up for "bad decisions".

It's hilarious. We're fine, folks, been saying it all along, you just gotta be patient. Miami and Indy have both been struggling, but I guarantee you not one other team wants to face Indy/Miami in these playoffs, because they know they'll get it together. There are 3 teams in the West with better records, and I still feel like the East will pull home the bacon this year. I just cannot bet against Indy or Miami. SA has been impressive, LA has pulled it together, but the big series that everyone is waiting for is Indy/Miami, and I still feel the winner of that will take it all home.

There are two types of quarterbacks in the league: Those whom over time, the league figures out ... and those who figure out the league.

I disagree with almost everything by the OP. I wish that we would have signed our big men to cheaper contracts too, but I don't think they were egregious over pays.

And specifically I disagree about Solomon Hill. I think he's going to be a very, very good defensive player.

I put a Larry quote in as my sig for a reason.

Getting all this stuff figured out is hard to do, let alone the first attempt. OKC has been the ugly sister for about 5-6 years now, it's been almost a decade since the Spurs put it all together. Considering the amount of turnover in what teams are right there knocking at the door, and the number of teams that actually get there, that final step has to be the hardest of them all.

I think the more apt question would be can this team overcome its coaching staff? Because Vogel has been a big disappointment in my opinion. Did not get his guys the proper rest they need through out the season. Unable to incorporate Turner into this team. Unable to reel in PG's bad play. Etc...

The front office has made the right "bets" time and again over the last 12-months. They have not all worked out but they were the correct decisions at the time the decision needed to be made.

The OKC win aside I'm still 50/50 on this team making the ECF. The trend has just not been good in the long-term.

All of that has next to nothing to do with the front office and almost everthing to do with some immature personalities and a group of key contributors who not only stopped growing around mid-season but actually regressed. The fact that our coaching staff is offensively challenged started to catch up to this group as well.

The talent to compete for a championship is in place and if the team closes out HCA against Orlando and then steps on Atlanta's throat in the first round my opinion will likely change but until I see some sustained good play my expectations are limited.

Or the Reggie era Pacers who didn't make it to the NBA Finals until SIX YEARS after their first ECF's Game 7. That would be like waiting until 2019 for the Hibbert/PG Pacers to finally make the Finals.

The harder you think about this line of logic, the more your brain will hurt.

                        Better questions:

                        - "Can the players achieve success in a way that paradoxically condemns the efforts of the people who acquired them?"
                        - "Will David West win a championship with the Pacers while flipping off Larry Bird, saying 'No thanks to you, moron'?"
                        - "Are our lives pre-determined by our creator, and is Larry Bird our God?"

Future Evan Turner post-game interview: "Evan, you scored 20 points tonight. How did you do it?" "Well Doris, I was put in a really tough spot when Bird traded for me. But I sucked it up, tried my best, and transcended the parameters of my own existence by hitting three shots from the corner."

This topic seems like a big to me.

Can we suck it up and overcome an extremely whiny fan base of chicken littles? Why does the sky always have to be falling?
The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!).

Its probably best just to get rid of everyone except PG. Forget that they're the best team in the East. One bad month is enough for me. It's probably time to start looking for a new HC as well.

Most of these are fair points, but to me, they are just knit-picking. The success of this team will largely depend on its starting 5, it always has. It doesn't really matter if Copeland is shooting threes as our primary backup 4, West is making 2 million annually more than he should, or Solo is a waste of a roster spot. Even though the front office hasn't been perfect, I think every move made has had reasonable logic and rationale behind it. You can't fault the front office for trying to make this team better and keeping its young nucleus together, even at a high cost. I mean I take much more comfort in knowing that they've done everything in their power to try to make this team better than to sit there and do nothing at all.
