Default Speculated Magic Number Thread : 0000000 WE ARE IN!

    Do we or Don't we

    Get to the playoffs.

Forget who we might or might not get back, some of us are rightly worried about even reaching the playoffs.
It was what Bball said that made me think of this.

History and standings lead to the conclusion that the #8 seed will likely have a 41-41 record.
The #6 seed will have a 46-36 record.

Now I have the distinct feeling that baring a miracle we will not get that coveted 6th spot. but we have every chance to get the 8th.

Wea recurrently at 24 - 26 and in order to reach our "magic number" we need to win 17 out of the remaining 32 games.

Let's play "safe" and say that our magic number is 18 as of today:

If the thread does not drop to far and if I remember I will update the number in the topic after every win.

    Let's see where we get!
So Long And Thanks For All The Fish.

.500 was the standard back in the day, but now the East is so stank high-30's will get you in.

    53%.

The way we are playing right now, it isn't going to happen. We will see what the break does, and about Ron, but I am feeling very pessimistic about this unless we start to play better.
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

the problem with magic numbers is, you have to be in control of your own destiny to have one.

Its really tough to GUESS how many games the teams above you will lose. You don't even know if that will be the team to fall, or not.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

Lou Brown knew how many games the Indians needed to win to catch the Yankees in 'Major League.'

That's the exact reason I am go0ing with a relative safe number, but then again all is relative isn't it ?

I think it is pretty safe to say that in the East a record of 42-40 gives you a playoff spot.

But we can adjust at any given time

I think you mis-understand the term "magic number"

that term is a combination of the amount of wins you need, and the amount of losses the team ABOVE/BEHIND you needs to lose for you to clinch position over them.

All you asked was "how many games do we need to win?" That's NOT a magic number.

I can calculate your actual magic number, if you want.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

The Pacers magic number to clinch a playoff spot over philly is 33. Any combination of 33 pacers wins/sixer losses will clinch conference positioning over the Sixers.

Problem is, your magic number is 33, and you only have 32 games left.

Basically, you need the sixers to lose a bit.

A magic number only means something if the number itself is less than or equal to the number of games left on the team's schedule. That means you're in control of your own destiny, and don't need "help" from outside influences.

Of course, if the pacers lose enough games, other teams may come from behind to pass them up. But to PASS PHILLY, the magic # is 33.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

Never to old to be corrected. and of course you're right

And of course we are assuming NJ does not creep up from behind, but let's hope that soon we will have to ad Chi to the calculations.

I feel we'll finish 22-10 the rest of the way, for a 46-36 record and the #6 seed. A first round match-up with Philly. Second round with the Pistons.

I concur. Think about how we've looked the past handful or more games. Then remember it was WITHOUT Jamaal Tinsley, the engine of this team. It's partially amazing we've won at all this stretch.

A few games after Tinsley's return, we're capable of at least winning two games for every loss.

I still do not know about that. We don't know how this team would be with JO and Jackson returning, and it really hasn't been all that great. I'll wait and see when Tinsley returns whether or not we can do better. But from what I see now, I don't think we can do that well.

From the pessimist's view of the world --

I think we'll get in, but that upcoming schedule looks fairly tough. I think we're probably 7th or 8th. Doesn't that probably mean Miami or Detroit? I'm very afraid of both of those teams, not so afraid of Cleveland, not at all afraid of whoever comes out of the Atlantic, but that would require a 6th place finish and that doesn't look likely right now, even with JT back.

It hasn't been all that great BECAUSE Tinsley went down right as Jackson was coming back.

I have no doubt that Tinsley will help. But the improvements when JO came back, and when Jax came back weren't that dramatic. So it makes me wonder if this won't be either.

Of course, 42-40 got the Heat homecourt advantage for a round last season.

East's a bit tougher this season, but it's pretty safe to say that 42 wins will get you into the playoffs.

Time to update after 4 straight P wins.

Right now you could throw a blanket on 6th thru 9th. We're only about a game behind Chicago and Orlando for 6th and if we can just get healthy we have a good chance at it, maybe even 5th if Wiz or Cavs tank. I don't think there will be significant difference in record between 6th and 8th. There could easily be some tiebreakers to determine placement.

The interesting contest will be for Atlantic champ, since whoever comes in second in that division might not make the playoffs. Very interesting if they have to use a tiebreaker -- difference between 3rd seed and 9th.

I think 5th seed might be possible with the way they have been playing.. The last 3 weeks or so have been very encouraging. 7 outta the last 9 and 4 straight has gotten me excited about this teams potential again even without Ron.

And whoever is 5th seed is going to have a far tougher 1st round matchup than 6th seed.
