The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

    Re: Odd Thoughts: Sorcerer's Apprentices

I think the fire went out of this team when Danny Granger returned to play. Before he was back there was a win one for the gipper attitude. Everyone thought when Danny would return it was an automatic NBA Championship banner. Paul had stepped up to the plate big time before DG returned. When Danny got back Paul reverted to old Paul and deferred to Danny again.
DG was not ready to return to star form yet, so it set the team back a little.

Then the All Star fiasco with "is Lance an All Star or isn't he" complete with video and national hype. Then the let down rejection. This stuff gets into young (and old people) people's heads.

Then our center is told he is a reincarnation of Wilt and starts to believe it. Roy can hardly stand up on the court. He is going to be good but has work and maturing to do yet before he is really ready.

    Then the trade.

Larry essentially told Paul "You have the green light, its your team go for it" Lance heard "Lance, you not that good, we can't trust you with the team, so we brought Evan to take your place in case you screw up ."

Bringing Bynum in told Ian the same thing and hinted strongly to Roy that "you are replaceable".

All these things happening instilled doubt in the minds of the these young men at exactly the wrong time.

At the same time GH has seemingly crawled into a cave to hide. DW is solid but I wonder if all this is tiring him, physically and emotionally. CJ got hurt, Bynum reverted to form (injured), D Sloan (who?), our number one pick (Solomon), our ready for retirement players (Scola, Butler) and the best player in the league who never plays (Cope) are not enough to rely on to carry us out of this malaise. Lavoy. (had to put him in here)

Then to top all this off, our Coach was mentored and trained by one of the worst Coaches the Pacers ever tolerated.

Unless these guys decide to use their talents to help each other like they did at the start of the season, we will not have to worry about beating the Heat in the conference finals.

Man, I love the Pacers but this is getting harder for me to enjoy. Show some heart guys, you are way better than this.

Remember "Orlando Johnson is not walking through that door"

Did Brian Shaw mean that much to this team?

Surprisingly, this season has challenged me more than any other as a fan. Yes, even more than the JOB years. Because you know then that the team was bad and there were really no expectations. But this Pacers team should be pound for pound the best team in the NBA, or at least in the East. But as others have said, this team has given up on the regular season, which to me is a reflection of a combination of immaturity and the fact that the NBA season is and always has been about 25 games too long.

Unfortunately, this team is not going to wake up until they lose the one seed, and by then it will be too late because Miami ain't giving it back. And in a year where we have both Stephenson AND Turner, David West before what will probably be a decline in play beginning next year, and the possibility of Andrew frigging Bynum in the ECF and beyond is a damn shame. Couple that with a Heat team that isn't very deep and a beat up D-Wade, and a superior Western Conference where whoever makes it out of it alive is going to be worn down come the finals. This is our best opportunity to win the championship, but I think these guys are too immature and are going to blow it.

I didn't go to the game last night, even though I worked about 50 feet from the Verizon Center (that office building you always see next to the back of the Verizon Center on telecasts, that's where I work). Because really, most of these guys are playing lazy and have checked out, and I'm not spending my hard earned money to watch that.

When you look at Miami's remaining schedule these games are very, very important. Miami will lose 2 maybe 3 games the rest of the way, which means if the Pacers want to play 500 ball they will be the 2 seed.

I have heard all year how important that 1 seed is, we are in a position to fight and get the 1 seed and we keep seeing pathetic effort after pathetic effort. Don't tell me there is a magic switch and things will be fine in the playoffs, because if there was a magic switch it would have been flipped by now. These games are pretty important if that number 1 seed is all that important.

          Re: Odd Thoughts: Sorcerer's Apprentices

Guess who else has 2 thumbs and has given up on the regular season....

I love the team, even implosion mode Pacers, but I'm not going to pretend this looks like quality ball. I'm also torn on how to evaluate the Miami win because outside of Lebron they looked like garbage, especially Chalmers. At multiple times that game was out of hand and only some sloppy Miami ball and odd choices salvaged it. For example when LeBron just randomly lost his dribble coming into the frontcourt late in the game. I mean I loved seeing those jerks lose and I do think we saw some great ball from the Pacers for stretches, but it didn't feel like I was watching the Spurs or Thunder or last year's playoff Heat or Pacers. It didn't look like championship ball, it just looked like "well I guess the East is such a s***hole that the Pacers can win it by default".

But they showed that they probably need the #1 seed and it's clear that if you don't beat WSH, CLE, etc and count on beating SAS, OKC or in MIA to get that seed that you are probably screwed. So I don't buy the "back to bored" because they should have the fear of god in them looking at the standings, and double that now. They just threw the WED win away and they had to have a sense of that even as it was going on. They must know that until #1 is locked up that they are already in the playoff battle.

In fact these games mean more than the first 2 road games in round 1. You could phone in 2 games in ATL or CHA and probably still win that series if you were really just bored, but if the ECF is only 3 games in Indy then you are done.

So I don't think it is sleepwalking. The Wiz tried to through that game away with awful shooting in the first quarter and left it on a platter. The Pacers looked confused almost the entire time which led to awkward passes and forced shot selection. They look like guys trying to figure out their reads on offense, they get into each other's space, they stand around watching from the weakside, the picks are loose and the screens don't exist. It's as fluid as a YMCA pick-up game on offense, and you can't fix that by trying harder. More effort into garbage and confusion just leads to tired defenders who are still trying to race down transition buckets from s*** offense that puked the ball up at the FT line.

The Heat just lean on Lebron and some shot making by Wade or Bosh some nights, maybe a touch of Allen or Beasley. They don't need good offense like Indy does cause they can junk their way to points half the time.

There are only 2 scenarios that seem possible

          1) My theory - they just don't understand their offense, or at least what to do with how team's are attacking it now, and are therefore in deep trouble with a system too broke to get out of round 2.

          2) Alternate - they just don't feel compelled to win any games except matchups with Miami. That means we will see 1 more game with effort the rest of the way and can except a 2-7 or 3-6 finish and a certain #2 seed. It also means they won't be fired up to play Atlanta, Charlotte, Toronto or Chicago because those teams aren't Miami. That's a 1st round loss as they go on cruise control waiting for Lebron to come to the court for the Bobcats.

          3) not an option - just bored by games with no meaning....um, how many of those 9 wins at the start of the year had more meaning than this game vs the Wizards? A win is a win except wins against Miami or wins in the EC vs WC (for tie-breaker purposes). So this Wizards game was as important to win as game 3, back when the team talked about how critical it was to do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO GET THE #1 SEED. They still say that's their goal. Why phone this game in just 10 games from the goal? Why would this carry less weight than a game 75 away from the goal? If Miami was 10 back then sure, the goal is over. But this was a game where you could see the finish line.

I don't believe #3 is realistic because there is no way they don't see that goal within reach, there is no way they can't circle the winnable games left that would get them there even if they lose the MIA, SAS and OKC game.

I say they wanted to win the Wizards game and that the real difference is Gortat >>> Oden and outside of Lebron right now the Wiz > Miami. That's true for Chicago, Toronto, Charlotte and maybe even the crappy Nets. "Bad Roy" = Roy playing against tough, physical centers more than "uninspired". To me the Pacers don't look worse than these other teams, they just don't look better either. That makes their playoff chances a crap shoot rather than the certainty that top seeds usually feel prior to the CF at least. With the offense figured out they just aren't better than these other teams. Good news is that means they CAN win I suppose, just like the Raps or Bobcats can win.

              Re: Odd Thoughts: Sorcerer's Apprentices

This season makes me really appreciate teams who successfully go petal to the medal for an entire year and put up win totals in the 60's. It certainly makes me respect the 2004 Pacers for what they were able to accomplish in that one season. I obviously don't look back on that era with fond memories, but for that one season they were a damn good team from start to finish and there is no doubt whatsoever that they would have made the Finals if Detroit hadn't acquired Sheed.

In the end, I'll be happy with any win total that gives us the number 1 seed, but I was really hoping that these guys could top the 61 wins from the 04 Pacers and set the franchise record for single season wins. Man, it looked like this team was going to breeze to a win total in the mid 60's, but now we're at a point where we can only lose one more game if we're going to win 60.

At one point last night while running back on defense Paul thought it prudent take his eye off of the ball handler and his man to glare at the official and smack his elbow repeatedly. I can't recall any Pacer team that spent so much time whining to the officials than this one has begun to do. Its no wonder Paul doesn't get half the calls he complains about. The word is out in the referee circles that Paul is a whiner and the last thing an official wants to do is reward a bemoaning baby.
this reminds me of the days when j.o. was here in his prime. he went from rising, exciting talent to a guy who was just as focused at whining to the refs after almost every shot. it became such a priority for him that he routinely gave up points because he was too busy with complaining to the refs and his man just kept playing and the team would effectively be down a man on defense and get scored on because he was still focused on teilling the ref he thought he was fouled. sometimes it was true and sometimes it wasn't.
while pg hasn't gotten t'd up for this, i think the refs have mostly just tuned him out. i don't like saying this but yes, pg has become one of the whiniest players in the league. it has become very rare when he has the ball and goes up for a shot with a guy defending him and pg misses and doesn't whine to the refs. frank needs to tell him to cut that out because it is hurting the team.

                  Re: Odd Thoughts: Sorcerer's Apprentices

I missed this game because I was hanging around downtown last night watching the NCAA games, and I have absolutely zero desire whatsoever to go back and watch the recording. What obviously jumps out from the box score is that PG and Lance combined to go 9-35 form the field. We can't beat many teams when our wings are throwing up percentages like that. Let me guess, PG decided to not let the game come to him like he did against Miami, and reverted back to his old ways of forcing up garbage jumpers and forced takes to the rack that resulted in ugly misses and whining to the refs. As Peck pointed out, it looks like Stephenson missed all five of his 3 threes. Yeah, there's a reason that teams are letting him take those.

Like I said, I didn't get to see the game, but the boxscore says that this was a game that we've seen all too many times lately. PG and Lance seem to understand that they must play team ball for us to beat Miami, but the problem is that they think they're good enough to win by playing 1 on 1 against elite opponents. They aren't.

Hibbert another dud. Peck mentions that he couldn't even guard Gortat. Looks like that's yet another big man who has owned Hibbert recently. Remember that beatdown Al Jefferson gave him? Or what about that Sims guy on Philly shining against him? For a guy who frequently gets trumpeted as an elite post defender, he sure has gotten smacked around a lot by other bigs lately. He is great at owning the paint against Miami, but most of that is because they don't have a good big who can smack him back.

I think you are right that they don't care about the lesser teams any more or the regular season, its just too bad they don't realize that they are flushing their chances of actually winning an NBA title down the drain.

I'm seeing a team that thinks they shoudl be treated like one of the elites while having done practically nothing to earn the treatment. Seriously what have they won? A few mentions on ESPN does not a champion make...but it appears it can certainly destroy one.

Not to defend Hibbert entirely, but some of Gortat's buckets came when Hibbert rotated to help a defender who got beat on the perimeter. Some of the time Gortat went at him as well.

What concerns me about West near the rim is that he did this same thing vs MIA in playoffs last year. His legs were clearly gone. I really think Frank just used him way too much this season.

One difference between the offense this game and the offense in other recent losses is the WAY we missed shots.

In the first quarter and definitely during the comeback in the second quarter, the offense was trying to pass and get the ball moved around. There was still some hesitation but it wasn't horrible. The turnovers came as much from trying to force ball movement as they did from anything else. Lance took 3s instead of closer shots, which I think is important because he isn't a 3 point shooter, but we had it under control once we settled off the TOs.

The shots not falling were going halfway down and back out, or around the rim and off. They weren't 10 miles short or so hard they clanged the back of the rim and caromed off. To me, I think those are harder to recover from as a shooter. It's not like you can do something different to get more length or less force - the ball is going where you want it, it just isn't going in. Which gets frustrating. Which leads to forcing things. Which leads to focusing on the offense instead of the defense. Which leads to the 20-point lead (which I will consider the actual margin since the cut down was in garbage time).

Had the defense been able to hang on once things really started going downhill, we might have been able to stay in it. But once again, an opponent found our weak point and hammered it in order to break things open.

Let's see where we are against the Cavs tomorrow.

Or throw in a first-round pick and flip it for a max-level point guard...

Everyone thought when Danny would return it was an automatic NBA Championship banner. Paul had stepped up to the plate big time before DG returned. When Danny got back Paul reverted to old Paul and deferred to Danny again.
DG was not ready to return to star form yet, so it set the team back a little.
That was a great post. I disagree a little bit about Granger though. I think way too much emphasis is put on Granger from all directions. Some say that the team has crumbled because of the chemistry we lost after trading him. Others are implying that his comeback hurt the rhythm of a team that was the best in the league in the two months before he came back. I don't know, it just seems like there is way too much focus in all directions on a guy who wasn't even playing last year when we went to Game 7 of the ECF's. I don't think that Granger is why PG started to play bad. Hell, Granger has been gone a month now and PG over the last month has been complete crap on offense. It's because of his selfish style of play on that end.

We started out on a tear this season because we picked up right where we left off in the playoffs last year. The entire team was playing unified team ball and everyone was on the same page. We were a better team than last year because our two 23 year olds had made massive leaps, Scola was one of the better bench players in the NBA, and CJ Watson was a drastic improvement in the backup PG department. But now our two 23 year olds have been playing a lot of selfish ball lately, Scola has been crap over most of the last few months, and CJ hasn't played in weeks. The edge that we had at the beginning of the season isn't there now.

Paul George over the first two months of the season played the best ball of anyone in the Pacers' NBA history. He was a firm top 5 NBA player, and you could have definitely made an argument for him being the MVP of the league through the first two months of the league. He let the offense come to him through team basketball, was nailing good jumpers, and had awesome takes to the rack. But playing so great clearly began to get to his head. Around the new year, he began a trend of drifting away from letting the offense flow to him. He started forcing a ton of garbage ISO jumpers, his drives to the rack became forced junk that didn't convert, and his whining to the refs has just become annoying. There's been a max contract, Gatorade commercials, starting in the all-star game, and a ton of national hype......but there's also been way too many shooting nights of 6-22, 8-22, 4-17, 3-13, 4-14, 8-23, etc. He has a 3 month long pattern of shooting garbage percentages, and in a nutshell his offense has been way too selfish, forced, and inefficient. Against the Heat, he played smart team ball and let the offense come to him, but against lesser teams he thinks that he can go Kobe and win the game by himself with ISO jumpers.

Lance has also diverted away from the things that made him so great in the first two months of the season. In those first two months, he was a spectacular distributor who was a superior creator to anyone else on the team. He made great quick passes and led the team in transition, which made him one of the most dangerous assets in the NBA. He still does those things better than anyone else, but like PG, he also fell victim to his own hype. Against the Heat the other night, he did all of the things that made him so great at the beginning of the season, but against lesser teams he falls victim to trying to win games 1 on 1. There is too much dribbling, unpredictable passes, and lately his shot selection has been questionable.

Meanwhile, I don't think there's ever been a two time all-star in the history of the league who disappeared like a fart in the wind as frequently as Hibbert. There's just no excuse for disappearing as frequently as he does when you make that sort of cheddar, and I'm just not sympathetic to the Christmas list length of excuses that get made for him. He all too often allows guys like Sims on Philly to not let him get in position on the offensive end, has rebounded like crap lately, and way too often allows other big men to put up Garnett-like numbers on him. The game against Miami was great, but Miami has pretty weak post defenders. Any team with a body gives him trouble nowadays.

I would be scared to see what opposing point guards average against George Hill this season. Last weekend, I couldn't tell if I was watching Mike Conley or Chris Paul. In March, his shooting percentage has been crap too. He needs to play better.

This is the first major test for Vogel since everything started going so insanely smooth starting in 2011-12 when we became an elite team. His "rah rah fire em up" attitude was crucial in changing the culture of his team, and it's remarkable what he accomplished. That being said, we're in a different stage now and are at a point where we need to compete for a championship right now. Salvaging this season and getting this team to return to playing elite by the time the playoffs roll around is going to require some coaching strength. If he doesn't succeed in doing it, then he needs to be evaluated like any player would be.

I'm also worried that West is going to be tired by the time we get into the meat of the playoffs. We're going to regret not using Cope more this season.

We can hypothesize all we want about why this team is underachieving against average teams. But it doesn't matter. Great teams that actually win championships do not go on huge streaks of underachieving during the regular season. I seriously doubt the Heat or Pacers win the championship.
