Having a team full of 5 stars doesn't hurt either. You could throw darts at a board and recruit a contender with that many blue chippers to pick from.

Cal can coach, though. He isn't a mastermind but he's good enough to utilize talent.

No doubt that his recruiting resources at UK help a lot. But I don't see any way in which Cal gets bounced in the Sweet 16 if he has a team with Zeller and Oladipo.

This year is definitely Cal's best coaching job at UK. 2012's team coached itself considering they had one of the best big men in the history of college basketball who was ready to immediately put up major stats in the NBA.

Wait, it was ever a question that Cal was a pretty damn good coach? Actual basketball coaching I mean, not just the recruiting, which is a BIG part of college coaching, but y'know. Knock the guy for cheating all you want, PLENTY of coaches cheat, they don't get to Final 4s with 3 different schools.

That Brandon Knight team he led to the Final Four was a pretty impressive coaching performance out of Cal too.

I'm honestly pretty surprised by this. the B1G seemed relatively weak to me this year.

Fun fact: IU beat two Elite Eight teams this year.

Louisville and Pitino got their championship last year, but this loss just has to be crushing to them. It just further cements the "little brother" status that they have against UK. Cal has pretty much owned U of L since he took over at UK. This was a golden opportunity for U of L to avenge the Final Four loss last year and send UK and their fans home. You know that Pitino has to be absolutely sick about how this one turned out. UK's team of freshmen was far more poised down the stretch than U of L's roster of players who won a championship last year. It's also devastation when you realize that free throws are what really killed you.

Tough to feel too sorry for Louisville since they did just hang a banner last year, but they won't forget this one anytime soon.

Cal wanted his Cats to have Indy exposure with the IU-UK game in Indy, so it's kind of ironic that he has the opportunity to have the ultimate Indy exposure by beating Michigan tomorrow to go to the Final Four.

[/U]Thinking about it, it is sad that Keady was fired within a couple years of putting together a team like this. Goes to show no coach is ever safe.
I agree it shows how quickly things can go south for a coach (hell, look at Painter's current state, him getting plucked by the UNCs and Dukes of the world used to be a legit concern given how young he was [and is]), but Mean Gene didn't get fired. He could've kept coaching Purdue as long as he wanted.

Wisconsin is going to slaughter Kentucky. They've got a big enough team that they won't give up 38 tip-dunks, and UK throws up slop 75% of the time.

What really burns me is even with all those offensive rebounds, we still would have won if a 34% 3 point shooter hadn't gone 4/6.

    We really missed McGary tonight.

In 5 years at UK, Coach Cal has been to 3 Final Fours and won a title.

In 6 years at IU, Clappy has never been out of the Sweet 16.

man, i really hope Kentucky doesn't win it all.
besides the colts, this sporting season has turned into a crapfest.
iu sports has been an almost total washout and the pacers who once looked like the best team in the league, are falling apart.

can't get much worse on this aspect really.

UK has played at a different level since the SEC tourney. They seemed to have nearly caught Florida- the Number One team in the tourney, during the conference final. I think it will be a UK-Fla title game and KY just might win.

No matter, saying Wisconsin will slaughter KY is probably wishful thinking.

The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!)

In general I'm not a UK fan but I am impressed with what they are doing here at the end of the season.

    Thanks

So proud of those guys. I absolutely love this senior class. (Shabazz, Giffey, Kromah..even though we only got him for one year.)

Funny enough, I'm not that surprised. When we went into the tournament with Kemba and AJ I thought we had just as good of a chance to win as anyone, because we had one of the best guards in the country. Kemba won, and AJ got to the Final Four. I feel the same way with Shabazz. On brackets and stuff, I have a tendency to pick against Uconn because I don't trust them..but in general, when you have one of the best guards in the country, you can usually do pretty well in the tournament.

I hadn't seen Michigan State, but when I noticed they weren't out rebounding us, I thought we'd win. If a team can't out rebound us, they likely can't beat us. And since Louisville isn't around to kick our *** anymore, not really afraid of any other team in the tournament. So we've got just as much of a chance as anyone.
