I wonder in a sense if this team is better as the underdog vs the Heat. even with HCA the pacers still go into a series with the Heat as underdogs right?

seems insensible to ask but as the #1 seed in the East are we the favorites if heat and pacers meet up in ECF simply due to HCA. HCA or not pacers are going to have to have a chip on shoulder mentality to beat the defending champs.

i just hope the pacers do not become "lax" if we are able play games 1 & 2 at the Fieldhouse. recent on the court performance suggests this team is still soft in some respects.

for crying out loud, we got threads on is PG playing too hard? seriously?
I think regardless of our seeding, we'll be "considered" the underdogs because the Heat are coming off two championships.

Best records since Jan 1 (assuming OKC loses to LAL)

    1. Houston 22-6 (.785)
    2. Los Angeles Clippers 23-8 (.742)
    3. Memphis 23-9 (.718)
    4. San Antonio 21-9 (.700)
    5. Chicago 23-10 (.697)
    6. Brooklyn 19-9 (.678)
    7. Indiana 21-10 (.677)
    8. Oklahoma City 21-11 (.656)
    9. Miami 19-10 (.655)
    10. Toronto 20-11 (.645)
    11. Golden State 19-11 (.633)
    12. Dallas 19-13 (.593)
    13. Portland 17-13 (.566)
    14. Washington 19-15 (.558)
    15. Phoenix 17-14 (.548)

Presented without a ton of comment but that is the top 15 records in the NBA since January 1. Lots of things going on here, but a big thing to notice is that the East has been noticeably better since January 1.

My best-case scenario is that the Heat get to the playoffs with the #2 seed, but with Wade simultaneously worn out and out of shape.

The good news is, the Thunder lost ground today. The bad news is, the Pacers couldn't take advantage.

Portland also had Houston on the ropes but couldn't hold on.

    Updated projections:

    1) Miami 62-20
    2) Indiana 60-22
    3) San Antonio 59-23
    4) Oklahoma City 58-24
    5) Houston 56-26

The pressure is also on the Pacers to win the next five in a row, which is never easy, especially following a four-game losing streak.

    1. Seems like this thread is stealing some of Anthem's thunder.

    2. Can the 'race' part of the thread title be changed to 'sympathetic, blindfolded stumble'?

Thunder pacers and heat are definitely stumbling but it's quite obvious the long season and high level of play are wearing on these teams. Also the high level of defense we play takes a toll after a while. The 2004 Detroit championship team had a 6 game losing streak.lets stay the course and support our guys as they go through this rough patch

So the pacers have the 11th best record in the NBA since January 1st. And we are the 5th best team in the east since 1/1.

Well at least we aren't the Blazers.

Put this in the other thread, probably goes here better.

I think they find their 3rd quarter D and the ship is righted starting Tuesday. I literally think its that simple. The bench at it worst is better than last years bench, it doesn't matter, this team goes as its starting 5 goes. I think they've all had about enough.

    Here's where we stand.

    19 games left
8 at home (88% winning percentage)
11 on the road (56% winning percentage)

    46-17 at the moment.

Tough games to close the season.

    Home:
    Boston
    Phillie
    Chicago
    Miami
    San Antonio
    Detroit
    ATL
    OKC

    Away:
    Phillie
    Detroit
    NY
    Memphis
    Chicago
    Washington
    Cleveland
    Toronto
    Milwaukee
    Miami
    Orlando

I think you can go 6-2 at home, get 1 of the 3 from Miami Chicago and Spurs. (Chance you beat two of those teams but lose to one of the teams you should beat)
8-3 on the Road, this is even tougher. I had losses to Memphis, Chicago Miami and one of those other lesser runs beat you just because its hard to win on the road in the NBA. That has you finish 13-6 for 60-22 overall. Miami has the Wiz at home tonight, so they will be 1 game behind the Pacers.

Lastly, after tonight, Miami has 12 home and 9 away. Its gonna be tough for the Pacers to have the 1st seed in the EC.

Anyone else like me. Two weeks ago I would have been all over the race for the #1 seed. But right now the race for the number one seed has lost its meaning a bit because of the Pacers struggles. This means very little if the pacers don't start playing better.

I don't buy the notion that a team has to be playing well going into the playoffs. But I do 100% buy the notion that if a team falls apart after the allstar break they are going to lose quickly in the playoffs.

what does that mean in real terms? If the pacers play below .500 the rest of the way they are going to lose quickly in the playoffs. They need to show they can win again.

The starters looked significantly better last night after the first quarter. We lost because of turnovers (which has always been our biggest weakness) and the bench not producing at all. I'm actually more encouraged after last night. We should (and need to) win the next 5-6, though. Hopefully that stretch will give us time to find our consistency again.

I'm somewhat encourage Shade by how they looked play to play, but also Dirk missed a bunch of shots he normally hits which would have made this a blowout, again. I'm looking for the Pacers to hold Boston to 12 points in the 3rd quarter on Tuesday, then I'll start to think they are trending back.

I mean it's not out of the realm possibility Miami loses tonight right? An uptempo team and they're on a back to back after losing to Chi? I know it seems crazy, but it could happen. Either way, we still control our own destiny. Need to start acting like it.

Memphis is really, really good again now that they are healthy. I don't know how high they are going to be able to climb, but good Lord if I was one of the top 2 teams in the West I would be praying they at least make it to 6.

It could happen. Washington's been playing some solid ball of late.

Miami's schedule is actually harder than it looks at a glance. Of their 13 remaining home games, 9 are against teams that are currently .500 or better. The projection assumes that they win ALL of those games.

I expect us to win our next 4, whereas the Heat have a tougher stretch. They will probably go 3-1 or even 2-2.

Combine that with winning our two remaining games against the Heat, the 1st seed will be ours.

And this why I do not want any part of Chicago in the playoffs. Or Brooklyn for that matter.

Fair warning that any of the bottom 3 (PORT, WASH, and PHX) may get dumped if they hit the .500 mark because I really don't feel like figuring out every day if a team like Charlotte has out paced them recently.

The Spurs gained a game last night by putting a whooping on the Bulls in Chitown.

Honestly, if any West team were to "steal" the #1 seed from us, I hope it's the Spurs. It would give them an edge over OKC and we match up much better with them than with the Thunder, IMO.

    Updated projections:

    1) Miami 62-20
    2) Indiana 60-22
