Thread: What is it about Wednesday?

  1. #1

Default What is it about Wednesday?

The Bobcat announcer made an observation last night that 10 of Indiana's 15 losses have all come on Wednesday. I don't have a schedule to confirm, but we must have a lot of back-to-backs on Tuesday - Wednesday.

It seems like they play at home almost every Tuesday, so I'm going to guess a lot of them, like last night, were home/road back to backs.....

[edit] I count 7 Wednesday losses.

    1 - @MIA
    2 - @TOR (home/road b2b)
    3 - @ATL (home/road b2b) (4th in 5 nights)
    4 - @PHX
    5 - DAL
    6 - @MIN (home/road b2b)
    7 - @CHA (home/road b2b) (4th in 5 nights)

4 of the losses we have suffered on Wenesday night are the second half of a back to back. Counting last night. So that is a small number. We also have 3 wins on Wednesday night as the second half of a back to back.

We have not lost 10 games that were played on Wednesday night. That is incorrect. As MR indicates we have 7 losses.

our record overall on Wednesdays is 5-7

Maybe I am wrong on this, but I read somewhere the Pacers were around 500 on the second nights, which is one of the best records in the league for back to backs.

Pacers are 11-8 in second of back to backs.

I posted this in another thread, but it is worth repeating. Pacers are 14-0 when they have more than 1 days off before a game. They have 3 more such games this season and looking at the opponents, if I were a betting man I would put big money on the pacers to win those 3 games

I would be interested to know how we have done this season on the 3rd and 4th games in respectively the 4th and 5th nights.

Basketball Reference has them at 15-1. But the point stands.

OK I count 16 total games. I forgot to count the opening game of the season and one around the allstar break.

But I count us being 16-0.

(the same exact point is made whether we are 15-1 or 16-0)

I count us being 3-3. We have only had three situations of 4 in 5 days. of course 2 of the 3 losses were the past two games.

In the 4th game of 4 in 5 nights we are 1-2

Where did you get 11-8? I just went through the schedule and got 8-8 on second night of back to backs

For the record, it appears as though the Pacers lost to the Pistons on Dec 16, 2013 with two days rest. Again, still a good point.

What are we with 1 night of rest since this is the most usual playoff experience these days.

With exactly one day rest, the Pacers are 21-6, with an average +/- of 9.2. OKC is 35-6 (+8.6), and Miami is 22-8.

Here are the records of these three in total non-back-to-back games:

    Indiana: 36-7 (83.7%)
    OKC: 40-10 (80%)
    Miami: 34-12 (74%)

The Pacers have played 17 back-to-backs (9-8), OKC have played 9 (5-4), and Miami have played 11 (8-3).

I had all this written down already because we just talked about it on the podcast.

sorry I got some of the numbers wrong. Reason why I didn't get into statistics.

Another topic - the pacers have over the years generally played more back to backs than other teams. I remember one of our coaches - I believe it was Rick Carlisle on his radio show going into a very detailed explanation as to why.

back to backs generally occur Tuesday-Weds and Fri-Sat. So anything that moves a teams game away from those days will limit the number of back to backs. For example moving a game from Wednesday to Thursday. (moving is probably the wrong word to use) But having a game on Thurs night instead of Wedds. night very well might eliminate 1 back to back game. You could play Tues - Thurs - sat. While maybe the pacers play Tues-Weds -Fri. But Thursdays usually only has two games scheduled due to TNT's exclusive schedule)

Also a team that wants a lot of Sunday games will also tend to have fewer back to backs. Lakers have a ton Sunday games. Pacers don't.

if the Pacers have a lot more Thursday and Sunday games next season they will likely have fewer back to back

Those numbers tell me a lot, thank you FlavaDave. They also confirm quite a bit of what I've been thinking. I'm extremely happy with those numbers. The Pacers have doubled up OKC's number of back to backs and maintained the same record. That is well done.

Discovering lots of fun schedule stuff off of this.

Mainly this piece. The Pacers have 3 more back to backs left. It will bring us to 20. Miami has 5 back to backs remaining over the next 20 or so games. That sounds pretty NOT FUN for them. Including our fourth game against MIA is April 11 in MIA. They have to go to ATL the next night. Meanwhile the Pacers have rest on both sides.

The heat have played 3 fewer games than the Pacers. And as I look at the pacers schedule it seems jam packed especially in March. So the Heat's schedule must really be like a lockout season. IMO that will cost them a win or two
