Default Bynum out to answer ifs with Pacers

Nice article again by Candace. Interesting that Bynum cancelled trip to Miami after visit here. Also sounds to me like Bynum won't be playing much longer.

His honesty is kind of refreshing. I also like his candidness on Kyrie and J. Jack and Waiters.

So from all I'm seeing here, most of the "if's" are checked off (motivation, chemistry, work ethic), leaving his health as the final "IF" to deal with. His knee(s) certainly don't sound good, but yet he's also making progress, working out, scrimmaging, and everyone seems to think he'll play sooner or later, so maybe the pain isn't as bad as I'm imagining it. He did play this season already, after all, so it's not like his last game was wearing purple and gold, but it's still making me wonder. I guess pain is better than something that's structurally in need of repair, perhaps.

Maybe I'm over-thinking it; it's March, the playoffs start in about 6 weeks, and at this point it's looking like if he does play it will only be for about 3-4 weeks and then the playoffs start, and on top of that only to play Ian's minutes, so I suppose that ought to be pretty achievable.

When it comes to adding new pieces, I still sometimes fall into the 'new toy syndrome' that I used to do a lot more when I was younger, so the wait for Bynum can sometimes be a little difficult in that respect, but I've also learned to be patient, and with this team and its success, waiting is much, much easier.

Bynum reminds me of a younger Big SMOOOOTH for some reason.

Yeah, I really enjoyed reading that.

    From the article:

Those good feelings have continued even though his precious Ferrari FF and Ferrari 458 Italia couldn't handle the frigid Indianapolis weather — "It got so cold, they didn't start. It was crazy!" Bynum says. So he shipped both cars back to Los Angeles and now fits in much better around these parts with a big blue Ford F150.
Absolutely loved that. Not an Escalade or even one of the larger trucks, but an F150. Brad Miller is probably envious of that truck!

Sounds to me like he has one of these two forms of arthritis.

    Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of knee arthritis. OA is usually a slowly progressive degenerative disease in which the joint cartilage gradually wears away. It most often affects middle-aged and older people.

    Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory type of arthritis that can destroy the joint cartilage. RA can occur at any age. RA generally affects both knees.

Considering that both of his knees are affected, it sounds like Rheumatoid. Exercise, and certain types of knee braces can help with this condition. Acupuncture as well.

As Hicks said, the "if's" have been answered with the exception of his knees. But with this group in Indiana, he's obviously not going to be starting or even playing starting minutes. He is just going to be playing a limited role off of the bench as a supporting piece to the greater picture in Larry's puzzle. This makes me more comfortable- allows me to "exhale" so to speak. Of course his knees will still periodically flare up in pain, but if he wants to win a championship and is driven to achieve that here, I don't feel like there will be any issue with his effort in a supporting role to play through it if it were to flare up on a gameday. Great read and great news for Pacer Nation.

    Hi Grimp.

RA is caused from an immune disorder, and given his history... it's highly unlikely that Bynum has RA.

The ends of the femur and tibia that connect at the knee joint are covered with a soft cartilage, that when combined with synovial fluid, create a very smooth joint surface that withstands a lot of weight and movement over lots of years. In between the two bones are a couple of orange wedge shaped pieces of cartilage that serve as shock absorbers (menisci).

When people injure their knee joints, sometimes either the bone cartilage or the menisci get damaged / torn / frayed. Unfortunately, your body can't repair these tissues. They can't be replaced by surgery either. When people lose that cartilage, it's uncomfortable... it's like an accelerated version of OA.

This is likely a big part of Bynum's injury. It's like he has knee joints of an older man who has taken a lot of wear and tear. He will likely get knee joint replacements once he decides to leave the NBA, similar to what Bo Jackson did way back when.''

edit: I had a chance to peruse Google's history on Bynum, and when I hear words like "meniscus tear", "loose bodies", "bone bruise" describing his circumstance, I'm convinced he just has a lot of degenerated joint cartilage. This unfortunately is a disorder you "live with" vs. "fix". The best way to live with it, is to dramatically strengthen the muscles around the joint to help minimize the pressure on the joint and reduce joint shearing (which further injures the cartilage).

Seems misunderstood, but still a bit immature. Seems like he's been working hard though. I'm anxious to see what he can do on the court. But yeah, sounds like he may not play past 30 because of those knees.

I'm just trying to imagine him working with those parts at his size. Working with the smaller PC parts with his sized hands/fingers can't be easy.

Yeah, he must have a very big case. I wonder if he does some of the open concept stuff.

Needle-nose pliers come in great handy for those little connectors. Just be careful doing it (or wire those up first!)

Any dude who builds his own PCs and plays in the NBA at the same time is okay in my book.

Custom made. Typically, you just add leg room by extending into the hood (engine is in back).

Still, I'm only 6'4" and have a coupe. There's no way I'd fit in my car if I were a 7-footer and it's no Ferrari. Must be a convertible.

I think it's awesome that he plays Starcraft lol. I played that game so damn much when I was a teenager. I wish I had a computer to fire up SC 2 right now haha. Bynum seems like a like able guy. I hope he can help the team at some point this season.
