If the Pacers don't win the championship I can see a huge discussion on pacersdigest. Some will say this trade caused it, some will say the trade wasn't the problem. I can see that for sure. I could probably write the script for both sides of the debate right now.

A third side will probably argue this trade was smoke and mirrors while they ignored the real problems.

Can/Does the NBA do this? I know in the NFL if you're even on the roster at one point during the season you get a ring.

What if someone from a school of business or management school were to ask, How did you do this? How did you get the Pacers turned around? Is there a general approach you've taken that can be summarized?

    Larry Bird: Yeah, patience.

I'd assume the team could give a ring to whoever it wants. Including fans. Hear that Pacers intern that's reading this?

That was the first time I've teared up, I've strictly been thinking basketball.

Seeing that video of Danny hugging his now ex-teammates was tuff to watch.

The Heat gave it to their broadcast and writers so I should hope so.

I just hope we don't have a hang-over of some sort emotionally from trading Danny. If we do it likely would cost us homecourt advantage in the east. Pacers need to win the next 5 games

They aren't as mentally tough as I thought they were if they let this have a lingering effect on them.

Yeah, it would really hurt them if they fell from the high level they've been paying at the last 2 weeks...

WE really need to quit with this line of thinking. "If so and so comes and we can't handle it....then we weren't emotionally tough enough to handle it in the first place"

"If so and so is gone and we can't handle it....then we weren't emotionally tough enough to handle it in the first place".

Its like saying if I get cancer or my mom dies and I couldn't finish college...."You weren't emotionally tough enough to handle it in the first place".

Is getting a championship emotionally taxing? yes.
Does that mean all other stressors shouldn't faze us if we have the fortitude to win it? No

Having teammates traded or cut is part of the every day reality in professional sports, though. Getting cancer or losing a parent is not such a routine thing.

I think it's fair to expect the mental toughness to overcome that level of adversity. I'd expect we'll have to overcome a lot more at some point, on the road to a title. A starter will get injured, or have a major, deep slump.

If I'm a salesman I'd think I'd be used to possible customers turning me down. It's the way a sales job works! If a rejection bothers me so much that I can't get up and make another sales pitch tomorrow, then I'm in the wrong line of work. Player movement is the way the NBA works.
The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!)

Comparing a beloved teammate being traded off of the pro sports team that you play on, to getting cancer or your mother dying while you're in college. I... wow. Just... wow. I think that's absurd.

Yep, it's definitely championship or bust now.

I just hope we're not focusing too much on Miami and not enough on OKC.

It's sad to see Granger go, the guy was a class act even after being traded. However, if Peyton Manning can go, is anyone safe? That was a much more tearful goodbye. I like Granger, and he was a very good player, but the bench was lacking serious punch. Even though he still had his high Granger bball IQ, he had become nothing more than a glorified spot-up shooter...except one who didn't shoot all that well. If Turner can give us some punch, some spryness off the bench, basketball wise we should be in better shape. It's the chemistry that's the real wildcard, but obviously that didn't dissuade Larry Legend from pulling the trigger.

I've always hated the notion that because these guys are so well payed they should just get over it. Trades are more than ESPN updates or newspaper headlines. There is a life impact for these guys. A big paycheck doesn't unplug your humanity or take away your ability to feel. I think they are plenty tough mentally.

Have you come on this thread for the sole purpose of telling everyone else their opinion is wrong?

You aren't a Pacer fan, you didn't feel how we did towards Danny.

Can you just let us have a moment dude?

I agree that his example is unbalanced, but I feel like the point that narratives are being created for the sake of it is a valid one. It's weird because this whole trade thread is about basketball reasons versus emotional reactions. And instead of explaining losing or poor play with basketball, some are choosing to speculate on emotional reasons. Seems like connecting lines between imagined dots in some cases.
