Default Zach Lowe - Pacers actively shopping Granger

    http://grantland.com/features/the-nba-swap-meet/

Salary-based desperation isn’t what it used to be. Expirings like Trevor Ariza, Rodney Stuckey, Charlie Villanueva, Paul Pierce, and Danny Granger aren’t the carrots they once were. Washington and Indiana have been active on this front, per several league sources, but have found little traction so far. Trading Granger will be especially tough for the Pacers, since they cannot take on even a single dollar of money for next season without jeopardizing their ability to re-sign the terrifying (in a good way!) Lance Stephenson.
Apologies if this has already been posted.

No real surprise here but it's the first time I've heard someone mention it per sources. If they're seriously shopping him, I would be happy with draft picks for this year as long as there was at least a first rounder involved. I can't imagine we could get a high pick for Granger by himself but hey, one first round pick would be better than no first round pick. I'm sure Larry could find a gem in the mid-late twenties.

Why trade Granger period? It just doesn't make sense.

The obvious answer to this question is to make it easier/possible at all to re-sign Lance. But I'm assuming you have different ideas about that?

Actually, trading Granger can only make re-signing Lance more difficult. Granger is an expiring contract. Unless we trade him and someone else for an even larger expiring contract, we gain nothing.

I can't imagine anybody who has watched Granger play this season giving up anything of value for him.

I'm not in favor of keeping Granger over Stephenson but i rather have him on the bench and go for that championship

Not if we get draft pick(s).

Not if we shed additional salary with him. If you could move Granger's huge expiring and some money from next year (Copeland's salary for instance), you could free up additional space for Lance.

The only way moving Granger could make it more difficult is by taking back a non-expring contract. Which would be insane if you have any desire to re-sign Lance.

    1) We can't take on any salary past this year if we do trade Granger if we want any hope of re-signing Lance.
    2) Granger doesn't have enough value and we don't have any more assets we would be willing to give up to get a player in return who could, in theory, replace Lance next year.
    3) Yes, Granger has looked pretty bad this season, but he's one of the franchise's best players of the NBA era. We have a hell of a chance at a title this year. Wouldn't keeping him and letting him play those 15-20 minutes off the bench be the classy thing to do (not to mention, the smart thing to do)?

    Uh, how do you figure?

The easiest way for Danny to assist us in re-signing Lance is by his contract expiring.

Yeah, getting more picks would actually make it harder to re-sign Lance.

I suppose it makes sense for the Pacers to see if they could trade Granger for a player who would make it easier for us to win this season. Bird said that he is only thinking this season. OK, even I don't believe that. Are there any expiring contracts of players who would help us more than granger (I'm assuming Granger gradually improves over the next three months).

Only if they are picks in this upcoming draft.

True, I suppose, but we may as well be discussing lollipop slides and gumdrop fairies because no one is coughing up a bigger expiring and picks for Danny and one of our contracts.

Perhaps the better question is: Why would a team trade an expiring for an expiring if we got the better player? We are set in the frontcourt, point guard isn't an issue, so you are reallly looking at a backup wing, which is what Granger is.

This is my point. We could only take back an expiring if we trade him for a player or we can just let his contract expire and let him walk with nothing in return.
There's someone out there that would give up a low, first round pick (in a great draft) for Granger or a multi-team deal could yield us a first round pick in some fashion. If we're actually shopping him and serious about it, this is the only thing that makes sense to me.

I guess you could take back a nonguaranteed contract for Granger. Not technically expiring but we could get out of it.

    I don't disagree.

The only thing I could potentially see out there is something like Ben Gordon and Portland's 1st for Granger and Copeland. Charlotte is desperate for outside shooting because their wings are 7 shades of awful from the 3-point line and they want to make the playoffs. But now we're starting to get into Grimp land and I'm not going down that road right now.

First round picks are an increasingly valuable commodity in the NBA. No one is dishing one out for Granger's expiring contract. Nobody picking that "low" in the draft to where it would even begin to make sense has the cap space to absorb him without sending back roughly $14 million in salary, and as we mentioned, it would have to be all expiring deals. Just doesn't work.
