Default Will Danny Get a Banner?

In lieu of Peck's all-time scoring list discussion, do you guys think we will retire Danny's number when it's all said and done?

No, not even if we win it all this year.

If he stays beyond this year and he's a part of a title team or two, yes. Even if he leaves but is vital in a championship in this years playoffs I'd give it a good shot. He is one of our best players ever and has had absolute zero non-basketball related issues.

I would think we would have to win a title or two and he would have to contribute to both in a fairly large way. It's quite unlikely at this point but not impossible.

Edit: A lot of good points have been made regarding the players who have not had there jerseys retired yet. If DD, and Rik Smits aren't getting their numbers retired, neither is DG

Thing is, those banners are reserved for the absolute best of the best. I don't think that he has been quite good enough, nor had quite enough success to be up there.... However, I say this all but knowing that he won't be here next year, that's just a sad fact realistically. If the position was such that he was going to stay and end his career here in Indiana, I may take a different stance on this topic... I just don't know that what he has done so far is quite enough for that.

Probably not. Rik Smits doesn't have a banner, and DG is about on Rik's level

No. This franchise has clearly set a very high standard when it comes to retiring numbers. You basically have to be a franchise altering player. Rik Smits and Dale Davis each played here for a while, made an all star team, were part of multiple Conference Finalist teams, and made the NBA Finals, but they won't ever have their uniforms retired. Granger just doesn't have enough on the resume' either.

DG is in the Smits-Davis-Schrempf-JO-Person class. He's not in the Reggie class.

I like the fact that Indiana doesn't play any games when retiring jerseys. Only elite players get the honor. We don't have bums like Brad Davis cluttering up our rafters

    Yes.

And honestly I just love that. You SHOULD have to be that type of player to get your number hung up there. Teams nowadays throw around jersey retirements like they are nothing, but not the Indiana Pacers.

Lmao for what? Putting up big numbers on bad to average teams? The Pacers didn't take off until Danny got hurt. And let's not forget the fact that he's been a pretty poor shooter/decision maker for much of his career. I can think of at least 15 Pacers who did more for the Pacers than what Danny has.

Good grief no. Name a big playoff moment for him. Perhaps even a classic back and forth matchup against a rival player where he came out ahead or played him to a draw.

Smits: Memorial Day weekend buzzer beater vs. Orlando and he played fairly well against Ewing and Shaq in their primes in several huge playoff series.

I doubt it. He'll be one of those guys like Smits where if he hangs around Indy after retirement and they show him on the big screen we'll give him a round of applause, though.

We've set the bar really high for banners so Danny most likely won't get one. If he doesn't leave after this year and continues to be a big part of the team for another 3 years then he might stand a chance but we know the odds are against that.

It's a shame that Smits had foot problems as he got older, because he was really tearing it up in the mid 90's. He completely outplayed Ewing in our 1995 series against New York.

The fact he put up huge numbers on teams that averaged about .429 and never made the playoffs is not getting him anywhere. It wasn't until the team got more competitive that you can give much weight to his legacy.

His best year was when the team finally did make it to the playoffs and he shined averaging 21.6 in the playoffs that first year. We lost in the first round. But a better measure of his ability was 2011-12 when he averaged 18ppg during the regular season and 17ppg in the playoffs...losing in the second round. That is Danny on a fairly good NBA team. Very good player. As described, more of a second fiddle guy on a good team. Maybe 3rd fiddle on a contender.

On this Pacer team, however, there is not a huge gap in talent between Danny, West and Hill for example. If Danny were healthy they would be operating at roughly the same level, although Granger would probably have the edge...particularly PPG. Paul and Lance of course are greater talents. Hibbert is an enigma. Hard to figure where he is...but we know without him we would not contend.

It would be interesting to see Granger's role on this team if he were healthy. It would give people a better measuring stick of him as a player. I think on this team he would average about DWest level...or a couple points higher.

Edit: Just reviewing how Danny did in the 2012 playoffs in Miami. When healthy as a veteran player, he only averaged 9ppg on the road in Miami...in the second round. Paul George as a 22 year old averaged nearly 21ppg on the road in Miami in the ECF. We are talking about a huge difference...a Miller vs Chuck Person level difference if not greater.

No, but if we had a ring of honor like the Colts have he would eventually get in there.

Absolutely not. If Danny gets a banner, than Jermaine O'Neal gets a banner.

Unless something changes where Danny becomes a more focal point on this current team and leads us to 1 or 2 championships, than no.

If he were to get one I think it would only be because the team would be trying to show him a token of appreciation for being the only positive bridge between this generation of Pacers and the brawl generation. As for the basketball perspective, I just don't think he stacks up with the skill and significance of the other banner-hanging Pacers. Reggie Miller, Mel Daniels, Roger Brown, George McGinnis, and Bobby "Slick" Leonard all hall-of-fame talents and/or were apart of Pacer championships. When you think to all the important pieces of the great Reggie Miller era Pacers that did not receive the honor, and you set the standard as high as the Pacer organization has then you have to honor that established standard by keeping Danny off the list in my opinion.

If he becomes a big contributor to a championship this year, I'm sure he would. Otherwise, I doubt he'll make it.

If that 90's team ever won one championship, there would be 2 or more retired jerseys and banners up there together with Reggie's. That really hurt the chances of Smits and the rest of the main guys.

Too early to say that about PG.

It is extremely unlikely Granger will. He would need to be re-signed, and then play the Pippen role for several seasons while making serious runs at a title in order to have a serious consideration.

He doesn't cross the Smits line.
