I think it's the same issue as Roy, then. Just do the same thing: Keep Roy near the rim as often as can be, force dribblers to him. Don't ask him to come out and hedge.
Agreed. We have the defensive personnel to do exactly what you said. Just funnel guys into Bynum like we do with Roy. He isn't going to protect the rim like Roy, of course, but he is huge after all and could do a solid job. If he gets into foul trouble then we can simply insert Ian to the game.

I also believe that this was a pretty big deterrent for Miami. They were probably interested in getting him because they know that they need additional big bodies but Bynum just couldn't fit in their defensive philosophy. Miami needs their bigs to be mobile and disrupt the PnR. Bynum cannot do that.

"It really wasn't a hard decision, I think it's the right fit for me and, in all honesty, I think we've got the best chance of winning," Bynum said. "It will be great to back up Roy and I'll do whatever I can to help this team."

So I'm assuming Bynum was told he would be getting the backup center minutes. The question now becomes do we keep Mahinmi as our 3rd center, or try to trade/package him for someone else at the center position with an expiring contract.

I was reading Candace Buckner's story on this and my jaw dropped when I read that Bynum is only 26 years old (!!!). It seems like he's been around forever.
Yeah, he was like 14 when he came into the league.

Odd time to do it cause Mahimni has been playing well. I still have doubts he can contribute a whole lot because he hasn't really played in a couple years, but I'm hoping to be wrong.

He does lack one thing that defines this team. A passion for the game.

This should be interesting....I dont agree that its quite as low of a risk as some are saying...not sure how one can say that when you have arguably the best team in the league and you make a change...Ian probably isnt thrilled with it...nor probably Scola and he hasnt looked happy lately-maybe this is why....

But I wholeheartedly trust Bird...and even if it blows up in our face, hes certainly earned the right....

I remember reading that when the Pacers were making their 1994 playoff run, Byron Scott used to bring his Lakers championship rings into the locker room to motivate the players and remind them what the team was striving for. I hope Bynum does that too. I know that Mahinmi has that Dallas championship ring, but Bynum is the only player on our team who played a sizable role on a title team. I think that the other players will respect that quite a bit.

That would seem about right...similar to how Granger and Oden have been coming back from knee issues...very slowly and methodically with the idea to make sure they are there come playoff time

True, but Granger was being brought back slowly before making his season debut. Bynum OTOH has already played 24 games this season. I'm guessing that they are bringing him in slowly since he has been laid off for a month?

I love how on other sites people are acting like this will desroy our chemistry and kill our title hopes.

Plus, if Bynum gets any scoring going... what the hell does Miami do about it? Especially with their bench? Roy looks his best offensively when playing against those guys, and now when he sits, enter Andrew Bynum. How does Miami deal with that for 48 minutes? They can't, can they?

Absolutely no need to move Ian right now. If you need to for money, it can wait until draft night.

For those who put emphasis on the per-36 stat, Bynum averaged 15.1 PPG per 36 with the Cavs. In real terms, he was averaging 8.4 PPG in just 20 minutes of play. His shooting percentage was pretty poor for a big man, but that was to be expected considering he missed an entire season last year. But he showed that he is still a guy who has to be respected on the offensive end of the floor. That's the huge advantage that he gives us over Mahinmi if he can stay reasonably.

Cleveland needed him to play for a myriad of reasons....no matter what anyone says, he was clearly out of shape but was playing anyway...and with bad knees the added weight only heightens the risk....thats not the situation here....plus hes not likely gotten in any better shape after being gone a month....so my guess is they work him back very very slowly...just like Danny...get him to the weight they want...then start working him in to get his legs under him and find some rhythm...and this gives him time to learn the Pacers systems-both offensively and defensively...its definitely in the Pacers best interest to put him on the floor only after hes in the best position to succeed...and again...its really about the playoffs at this point...not unlike the Oden situation...and Danny to a certain extent as well...though Dannys production is needed more now than Bynums is...

Thanks for keeping us up to date on the tweets, tadscout. Reminds me of how the Bulls asked for Jordan and Pippen's opinion before signing Rodman.
