Thread: Andrew Bynum 13-14 General Discussion

Something tells me we aren't done, and that a certain snubbed from the ASG PG we saw on Thursday will be making their way to our bench as well

If he can give us just 10 minutes of good play, he could be the difference. It will require the other team to keep a post defender in the game...wearing that guy down and giving some fouls. That should help Roy. He's also more skilled offensively than Ian any day of the week. If healthy and head screwed on, we may have stolen something. Recall ZBo.

    Conrad Brunner ‏@1070Bruno 3m
#pacers will characterize signing as low-risk. But it will challenge chemistry, for what reward? A better backup C?
Bruno doesn't seem sold on it...

I think Mahinmi is a solid backup and plays hard, BUT we've seen how that when Hibbert leaves the game vs. Miami, they immediately attack the rim and for them it's a green light special to attack, attack, attack. Ian's a good shotblocker too, but Bynum is just big. He's 7 foot, 280 lb at least, and maybe LeBron, Wade, and Co. do more of a double take when thinking about entering the paint.

I would sure like to know what our players, especially team leaders
think about this. If they're good with it then so am I.

Nevertheless, welcome Mr. Bynum, you sure picked an opportune
    time to become a Pacer!

    I love this signing.

    1) It's yet another sign that we have a GM who is possessed by his drive to win a championship.

    2) In putrid Cleveland, he put up some OK numbers considering he was coming back from injury. His shooting percentages were off, but he showed that he could score and rebound in limited minutes. Just two years ago he put up some MONSTER numbers with the Lakers. If he could just get reasonably healthy, then wow.

    3) I don't expect any chemistry issues. It seems that he wants to be here. He's obviously going to hold this organization in higher regard than the Cavs, plus Larry Legend commands instant respect from everyone. I don't think that Bynum is an idiot. He know that we have an elite record because of the players already here and I think that he'll respect them. It's a huge opportunity for him to play a role on a championship team and he knows that.

    4) I wouldn't be surprised if we see a trade before the all star break. But if Mahinmi is traded, we need a backup plan because Bynum's health is risky.

    5) We have a pretty nasty bench.

    6) We're bring in a player with championship experience, which no one else on this roster has.

While I'm not 100% sold on Bynum, especially the person, the thought a fully physically and mentally healthy Bynum AS A BACKUP is drool worthy.

Ick. Sorry, but thumbs down on this one; bad karma - it just doesn't fit with our tough-but-good-guys image. I can't get past the image of Bynum clotheslining JJ Barea....
I certainly agree that this was a dirty and dangerous play. Let's hope that Bynum has changed.

Well, we know West won't take crap in that locker room, and Bynum ideally could learn a thing or two from Hibbert in both verticality and work ethic. Hopefully, Bird made it a point that if there are any distractions, he's gone. However, I'd rather know that this team is doing everything in our power to try to get better, and we aren't complacent just because we have a really good team right now. You can't teach size and skills, and at 7 foot, 280 lb, Bynum can be a difference maker for 15 minutes a game.

In this scenario, our offense is better because Bynum is a better individual scorer than Ian but will also draw more defensive attention than Ian (and he's capable of passing better than Ian as well when double teamed). He's also a bigger body defensively than Ian, and that's where I actually appreciated Ian the most was giving us 48 minutes of rim protection / shot contesting near the paint. Ian's more mobile, but Bynum is friggin' huge. If we get him playing with verticality the way Roy does, he's a brick wall with wings.
All of this is true but Bynum struggles a lot in the PnR defensively. His mobility was limited in Cleveland and thus he couldn't defend the PnR well. He is good at stopping others at the rim, though.

I don't know if Bynum fits our defensive identity as well as Ian does but it's worth a try. Both will play and receive chances to show to us who is better suited for the job.

    WOW, okay, breaking news!

I just talked to my moms cousin, who is best friends with a vendor for Bankers Life Fieldhouse. This vendor was talking to a ball boy, who got the job as a ball boy because his dad is higher up in the organization. The dad, was at McDonalds and ran into Bynums step sister who said Bynum has signed.

Also, the step sister was buying Bynum 10 big macs, 5 large fries, and 3 XL cokes. :-(
Okay, I am glad u shared this but sorry to question your assertion here. But, seriuosly....there is like a 1000 degrees of seperations here between u and this step sister of Bynum. If I ran into Bynum's Step Sister, I wouldnt know her from Eve.

Imagine two years ago if someone would have told you that the Pacers 2014 bench would contain Andrew Bynum, Luis Scola, and Danny Granger. You would have been like, WTF?!

I think it's the same issue as Roy, then. Just do the same thing: Keep Roy near the rim as often as can be, force dribblers to him. Don't ask him to come out and hedge.

This guy has championship experience with Kobe, Gasol, and Phil Jackson. No one else on our roster has been to the Finals except for Mahinmi when he was a bench warmer. Bynum can absolutely offer us some valuable contributions. Also, he could definitely be a good goon to lay a couple of wicked fouls to Miami in a playoff game. No matter how mobile he is, it's never a bad thing to have an extra big man with six fouls.

I'm loving this signing more with each passing minute. I'm just curious to see what number he rolls with and how he'll wear his lettuce here. I'm hoping for another fro.

I'm happy with the signing. It just makes the season more exciting. And there is still plenty of time for him to fit in with the players. Miami is gonna have problems. This is the best pacer team ever and i think this is the year!

Lets say Bynum plays well off the bench. This summer, off of a NBA championship, we release Scola (4.8). Dump Cope (3)and Ian (4). Lose Danny at 14 milllion.

    Sign Lance 10 million.
    Sign Bynum 5.4 million
    Sign Danny 3.5

Does that give us enough space to get another wing? Danny can play the 4. But we would need another wing.

    A bench rotation of
    Watson
    Lance
    Veteran shooter
    Danny
    Bynum

I disagree with Bruno. We have a collective team makeup not unlike the Jordan-era Chicago Bulls, which were able to do what the Chuck Daily-less Pistons and San Antonio Spurs (before Popp) were unable to do, harness Dennis Rodman. And by all accounts, this isn't a Rodman (actively disruptive), Tinsley (iffy off court playmates), or Ron-Ron (whacked) guy...and his last full season stop, with a strong team leader (Kobe) kept Bynum focused.

We have an organization, from top down (Larry - Clark - Nate - Vogle - West - Butler) that will not allow this...and Bynum also has to understand that the total lack of interest from everyone else in the league has to tell him, this might be your last chance.

And also...backup center? This is a former All-Star who we are getting to play backup, not just another guy who is a career backup. Two former AS and a starter now...on our second unit? Wow.
