Default I Still Say The Pacers Are Underdogs To win The Title

I think too many people are just looking to get out of the East as a primary objective. That would be great, but after watching many late night games this season, there are lots of athletic teams with great ball movement that come out of the West. That seems to be the Pacers achilles heel. My eye test tells me the Pacers will struggle if they reach the Finals against these type of teams. Discuss.

I think we are favorites to come out of the East.

I don't know that anyone SHOULD be picked to beat us 4 games out of 7. That's just tough.

Excellent thread, especially given the success this team has experienced so far. We could look at this bump in the road as a learning tool from which these guys will only get stronger. But over the course of the last year and a half, let's not forget how fragile the mindset of this team possibly is. Don't forget Hibbert's early struggles with confidence last season, which led to a lot of foul trouble and has recently shown up again. Teams seem to have caught up to us, especially the more athletic Western Conference teams that we don't play as often and have had the more time looking at film.
Some of the starters' reaction to that Bynum signing caught me by surprise. I mean, no comment other than "Ask Larry" says more than we know.

I don't think anyone thinks we are the favorites to win the title. In reality there's about four teams with a chance. Us and Miami of course and Thunder and Spurs.

Thunder with a healthy Westbrook are the clear cut favorites.

    Clear cut huh?

    Vegas has..

    Miami
    Indiana
    OKC

In that order. A lot due to the fact that us and Miami will have an easier road. But let's not forget, we took Miami to 7 with a Augustin, SAM YOUNG, Hansborough bench. If I had to pick one team I would pick the Pacers. Of course I would not take us against the field. But I would give us the best shot right now.

We aren't underdogs, we're contenders. Just like OKC, Miami and a few other teams.

No one said that we are the favorite. In fact, there is no clear cut favorite for the title this season. This is the year that a betting man always bets on the field due to too many question marks (for OKC it's how healthy Westbrook is and how will the bench play in the playoffs, for Miami it's how healthy Wade is and battling the fatigue of 3 straight Finals appearances, for San Antonio it's if they are finally too old and if Kawhi takes the next step, for us is if we're able to score enough and how will the bench play etc).

We are certainly contenders but no one said that we are the favorites.

I don't think I'ld call them any more clear cut as favorites than us, MIA, or San Antonio... But I believe they have the most deadly lineup for us to face... They would intimidate me more than the others heading into a series... But I feel all of those teams have an equal opportunity this year if everyone were to be healthy...

Without Westbrook they are playing better than both us and Miami. Right now they would beat us both even without him.

A seven game series is so much different than playing multiple team over 82 games... And home court advantage could be the difference maker for all the teams...

If we can squeeze out the best record in the league for home court advantage throughout the Playoffs I like our chances against anyone...

Playoff basketball is just a totally different game than the regular season. The intensity ramps up for the entire game, teams actually play defense, and I feel that our team has been/is built for the playoffs. In the Golden State game we came out with playoff intensity, maintained it throughout the entire game, and the results were in our favor. OKC is the one team that scares me, but it's so difficult to get a read on how a 7 game series would work against them when you only play them twice a year.

Why is Portland suddenly not in the discussion? Also, I think a team like GS could get hot and surprise some people. I don't know about a title, but I wouldn't want to face them if I was a top West team.

Miami and Oklahoma City are the only two teams that really worry me. Hopefully someone will knock the Thunder out before the Finals, should we get there.

If I had to rank teams right now, it would be:

    1) Oklahoma City
    2) Indiana
    3) Miami
    4) Portland
    5) Golden State

I think our experience and hunger (and maybe home court) gives us the edge over Portland and Golden State.

Sorry everyone, but the team with that LeBron James fella is still the favorite to win it all. We're close behind though, along with OKC. Think of us as one of the other elite teams during the Jordan days. The Bulls didn't have home court throughout for the third title of either threepeat. That doesn't mean basketball fans thought the Knicks, Suns or Jazz were the favorites. The Lakers won a road series on the way to their third in a row too (you can point to the refs, but that's the treatment a team gets after it wins two straight titles). Homecourt advantage or not, we're going to have to beat the best player in the world, with the refs doing us no favors.

So many things can be said about the bolded part. Generally, the most talented teams have the best records in the regular season, and that continues in the playoffs. When is the last time a 7 or 8 seed won the title? The more talented (and better coached) teams are better able to adapt, and have a greater variety of strengths, making them just as effective in the regular season AND playoffs. The games may seem more intense or "immediate" but talent is talent.

I think some people are wrongly discounting Portland. If there is a team out there that I am scared to face in the playoffs it is them. They are the only team who has a starting 5 that can match our talent at all 5 starting positions, and possibly exceed it in total.
