Default Pacers / King Post Game thread - 1/24/2014

Luck....sheer luck that the Pacers were able to pull this very ugly win.

PG24 tying the game with a 4 point play.....to me....part skill ( yes, All Star Skill ), sheer luck that the shot went in and thanks to the stupidity of Derrick Williams.....a foul.

Also....when you have Thomas and Thornton score 80 points on your Team....I really don't know what to say. They just had their NBA 2k14 Game Sliders on 99 all night long.

I just pray that the thin air in Denver doesn't wear out the Team.

I'm sorry, but that win wasn't luck. We were determined to never quit, and Paul George proved to us all why he should be starting on the All-Star squad. He has that 'clutch gene' that Skip Bayless talks about, that killer instinct.

This game felt a lot like last year. We need the bench to put out. Scola has been disappointing of late and looks tired. Maybe he needs a night off? Watson, just yuck. Thank goodness for Paul.

Good tough win thanks to PG. I'm not too thrilled with Lance playing hero ball at the end of regulation flipping up a circus shot with the game on the line. We had time to get a good shot. I think with Lance it's always going to be take the good with the bad.

You think that there are posters on here that think that Hibbert is the most important Player on the Team....specifically over the acknowledged Franchise Player of the Pacers that just earned his MAX Level Contract?

I do think that Hibbert is the most important Defensive Player on the Team....which is all together different.

Thornton has been a "thorn" in the pacers side since he got into the league but PG and David West put the team on their backs. Hell of a win, I got nothing else to say

One of the best games I've seen. It was a really a team effort in the second half, but honestly, I think it was one of Paul George's best games in his young career.

4-point play, the 'dirk' in the heart, and a last minute steal...PG was tripping. What a comeback! I'm glad they didn't give up like I did.

PG was brilliant. That being sad, refs missed crucial calls on both sides tonight. Pretty horrible in the 4th quarter/OT.

Since Pacers won this one, I can live with a loss in Denver tomorrow. Also a California-Arizona-California-Colorado-California road trip doesn't make too much sense.

I wish Lance had made that full court shot. That would've been great.

I do want to partially defend the guys picking on Roy. I would agree with anyone who says Roy is tough as nails in the defensive paint. In other aspects of the game, Roy plays hard. But I honestly believe him to be soft offensively and as a rebounder.

At this stage, I don't think much can be done to provide Roy better balance and stability. He gets knocked off his path and position a lot and is on the floor a lot. But, there is a lot that Roy could do to improve his ability to catch and grasp the ball better by improving his forearm and hand strength. I hope he focuses just as much on that this summer as he does on his workouts in Texas.

    A few quick thoughts...

    1. Paul George continues to amaze. How that is still possible, I don't know.

    2. But for PG's heroics, Pacers don't win this game without David West or Lance Stephenson. I thought tide actually turned for Kings in first place when West picked up 2 quick fouls. Kings had no answer for West. And though Lance had his bad moments, and got bodied by D Williams a few times (duh), his tenacity got the Pacers valuable buckets and boards.

    3. This game was both the bad and the great of Roy Hibbert. I'll never understand how the guy who is automatic vs MIA can look like such a spazz on offense against other teams, and I thought he played indecisively on defense early, but once Pacers locked down on defense and funneled everything to Hibbert like they usually do, you were reminded there isn't a better defender on the planet. His defense created the stops that made this outcome possible.

    4. Rough game for George Hill. I don't know how to evaluate him, given his marks just couldn't miss. But I couldn't come away from this saying he played well either.

    5. This has been a really rough road trip for Watson, Mahinmi and Scola so far. Watson is making bad gambles on defense of late, and a total nonfactor on offense. Mahinmi...look, we evaluate Ian on a scale, but even for those expectations, he has been incredibly sloppy on this trip. Quite frankly, his effort on the boards has been laughable, and now his usually-solid rim protection is off because his defensive timing in general is off—he's jumping late, challenging at bad angles and inviting contact fouls. It's really not a good look fro Ian. And Scola finally...I think we all concede defense and consistent rim play from Scola, and he wasn't horrible on defense tonight, but if he's not hitting his spot-up 2s, you're also reminded the guy really has no purpose other than to keep West in play for the home stretch. Given Scola's role on the team, he's just gotta hit those consistently. He hasn't this trip.

    6. Maybe JMO, but I think Danny Granger is at a bit of a crossroads and needs to make a decision on his game. Fact is, he needs to be an impact player when he comes off the bench. He needs to impact the game. That doesn't mean he has to score 10+ points. That means he had to be efficient on offense and/or make impact, hustle plays on defense. The last few games...he's just not doing either. Granger and Hill looked allergic to 50-50 balls today, and Granger got caught napping on at least 2 easy buckets for Sacramento. I thought the effort and focus were lacking, and Granger looked like a guy who wasn't sure what his impact on the game should be. I don't think that answer will be consistent game after game, but I do think whatever it is, the impact has to be there. That's the caliber of player he is, and that's the expectation within that lineup.

    7. If Pacers don't pick up 3 pretty dumb techs (granted I saw Aaron Gray whine about 2 or 3 calls as loudly as George did, and not get whistled...), they don't need a 4 point play to tie this. Guys lost their cool tonight. Hey, you're going to have tough calls go against you. Play through it. Easier said than done, but if you do, you'll benefit from a few yourself at some point (Hibbert clocked Williams at the end on a key defensive stop, and it was a no-call). I think this team gets caught whining and selling out for calls sometimes -- staying back to complain, staying back on the floor to sell a call, etc. I just don't want it to come back to bite them later.

    8. If we're honest, Pacers stole that win. But you're going to need to steal wins! Just reiterates that, in the clutch, you always look to West and George. Anyone else is secondary. And lean on your defense to make winning plays.

I don't think anyone is denying that Roy struggles on offense. It's just frustrating when certain posters choose to pick out negative plays over and over as opposed to positive ones. Just personal preference I guess. There's an ignore list for a reason, guess I should use it.

Also despite 3/9 shooting, George Hill was 2 rebounds and 2 assists away form a triple double. Finished with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals.
