Default Ryan Grigson: We don't win 12 games without Trent Richardson

Yes this really did deserve a post of its own...

But as far as this is concerned

Ryan Grigson: We donít win 12 games without Trent Richardson

Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson held his postseason press conference on Thursday and spent some time on running back Trent Richardsonís disappointing performance after the Colts sent a first-round pick to Cleveland to acquire him in a trade.

Grigson said, via Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star, that Richardson fits everything that the Colts want to do on offense and that he played a valuable role for a team that wouldnít have won 11 games in the regular season and advanced to the divisional round without him. That last point certainly goes against the conventional reaction to Richardsonís role on the team, especially with Donald Brown playing ahead of him down the stretch and into the playoffs.

Brownís a free agent, though, and Richardson will definitely be back in 2014 so Grigson and the Colts donít have much choice but to have patience and hope that a full offseason leads to better results from Richardson next year. The price paid to acquire him will guarantee him a long look at the starting spot in the backfield.

If a full 16 games in Indy look like the 14 he played in 2013, patience will be a tougher sell this time next year.

Whatever helps him justify the trade in his head. Nobody believes you, Grigs.
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

I am getting sick of the Trent hate. I guarantee you the guy has a good year next season, give him an off-season and training camp. I swear some people honestly believe they could do better than him. It isn't easy joining a new team mid-season with an awful offensive line

I don't hate Trent I didn't think he was worth giving up a 1st rounder for.

If there's anything about this statement that I'm bothered by is that they're referencing him for the success the Colts had this season and he was really a nonfactor when without Andrew Luck we wouldn't have won 12 games this year.

That would've been more truthful coming from Grigson who just a week ago said Luck reminded him of MJ.

I believe you are going to be sorely disappointed in Trent. I good back should show good instincts regardless of whether they know the system or not. I wanted to believe, but I just don't see it. He can probably be a mediocre back in time, but this is a guy we gave up a first rounder for. Here's hoping he proves me wrong.

I'm not sure where he will be on the depth chart next season. Donald Brown outplayed him and usurped him as the starter, one has to assume Vick Ballard will jump him too.

I am giving him a few more games next year after a full offseason of training camp with the team, but he is on a VERY short leash even with me (who loves the guy.) I hope he can go back to what he once was.

He's really good in a lot of areas, and the run part, I think teams were throwing more guys in the box, or moving guys post-snap into the box, for Trent than DB. The running plays *always* looked way more congested and blown-up for Trent than DB. Always.

I see it in Trent. I'll go with Grigs word over most dudes on their couches.

Trent's pass blocking helped us in a lot of games. Trent has the pass blocking and receiving down. He just needs running, or at least better designed runs. I think an offseason with A) improving the offensive line B) Pep being more comfortable as OC and knowing what he has on the team and C) Trent learning and getting comfortable in the system will pay dividends.

Remember when everyone thought Larry was crazy for saying Lance was the most talented on the team?
How about thinking he was dumb for drafting Miles?

Give him the preseason. If he looks bad, cut him. Frustrating that the Pats got Blount for a 7th

We really did need another running back with all the injuries. I'll give him a complete season before passing judgment.

I still honestly think the bigger issue is the line.

I agree. There's nothing we can do about the trade now. Hopefully he improves after an off-season of watching film, further getting comfortable with the playbook, and working with the coaching staff. I doubt he was ever fully comfortable here this season since he had to learn everything on the fly. Hopefully Thomas comes back strong and Grigs makes some O-Line upgrades.

T-Rich definitely deserves the opportunity to show what he can do here after a full off-season of work.

Well if that were true all the NFL coaches wouldn't disagree with you. Seeing as how they use preseason to decide who to cut

I'm amazed at the long list of excuses people have for Richardson. Obviously, every Colts fan wants him to succeed, but he was terrible the entire season.

First, he was struggling because he was new to the team. Then, he was struggling because the o-line sucked (despite Brown not having any issues). Then, it was because defenses stacked the box against him (because teams always stack the box when a backup RB averaging less than 3ypc comes in). Then, it was because the Colts were giving DB better play calls (because, of course, our coaches wanted Rich to fail so they only gave DB the good plays). Now, it's back to "he needs more time."

Running backs don't need much time to adjust. It is the simplest position to play in the entire sport. You aren't asked to make any reads of the defense (every other position on offense has to read and adjust). The terminology for running plays hasn't changed for decades. If you have skill, you will succeed. The guy had four months of practice time, yet he still needs more time. Ballard didn't need two years to be able to figure out our offense last season.

I just don't get why people get so defensive about him. He was benched and replaced by a guy that most Colts fans have spent years complaining about. Is it just because he was a top pick?

Remember when people were saying how the rest of the NFL must be pissed that we stole such a good running back for "only a late first rounder"? I heard somebody call into 1070 the next day talking about how the Browns could have easily gotten much more, but they accepted the first offer given to them. Doesn't that tell you something? Why would a team give up on a guy so soon that they drafted so high? Why would a team be so quick to take the first offer on the table?

Which was probably in the top half of his best carries as a Colt....

If Grigson had said TRich WILL BE important next season for the Colts then I'd see the comparison ... BUT He's saying TRich's craptastic season with the Colts actually had some positive impact. Anyone who watched the games knows TRich had as much or more to do with losing than he did any winning... So this is not someone saying a guy has raw talent and it just needs to be honed and then we'll all start to see it too. No... Instead he's telling us we didn't see what we saw.
